Anupama back to Shah house , at Baa's feet !
Geet Handa inspected her new office. It was a spacious but a little dusty cabin. Adi apologized for this, saying that it was due to it being unused for so many years. It hardly bothered Geet. She folded her hands for a quick prayer and started her work.
When Maan came into his cabin, he instantly saw that his desk was free from most of the files and a steamy cup of black coffee awaited him. He looked to his left and saw his new secretary going about her tasks. Not having to bother with so many trivial things was surely something he had to get used to. Maybe hiring a secretary hadn't been a bad idea after all, he thought.
At lunch, the round and friendly face of Pinky Manchanda greeted Geet. Both had met briefly in the morning.
"Oye Geet, wanna have lunch with me?" Geet agreed and they made their way to the canteen. In usual cases, Geet refrained from spending much time with others but Pinky's chubbiness and bubbliness reminded her strongly of her own sister.
"Let me tell you the story of this canteen. Long before I started here, there was only a pantry and everyone brought their food from home. Then one day, Damini ma'am came to meet DD and she saw this. It was she who arranged for an eating facility then. It was small but when I came, me and a few other employees asked DD to improve it and guess what, he did." By the time, her story had ended, they had already had their lunches in front of them and were seated at a small table.
"Who is Damini ma'am?" Geet asked.
"Oh, you don't know? She is DD's grandmother. She sadly died a few years ago." Geet nodded as she took in the info.
"And who is DD?" Pinky giggled.
"That is what almost all females called Maan sir over here, to be precise everyone apart from Sasha ma'am. It stands for Dhak Dhak." Pinky made a gesture to explain and added a dreamy face.
"That's what our hearts do every time he is around." Geet gave a small smile. In her life, she had given the opposite sex least of her time and she wouldn't change that. Her priority was her work and that is what she lived for.
If one thing could be said about Geet Handa's arrival, it proved to be a blessing to many. Not only Maan's workload had decreased but also Yash's little work load was none-existing now. He always had his way with people and getting Geet to do it was one of his easiest tasks. In order to enjoy the extra free time, Yash called his (girl-)friend to the caf.
"Hi girlfriend." Yash greeted her cheerfully but she made a face.
"Yash, I told you that I am not your girlfriend. I am…"
"…just a simple girl from a middle class family who came to Delhi to study and thinks of me as a good friend." Yash sighed slightly and even felt a little bad. Although he had his share of girlfriends, he never felt so sure about his feelings as he felt for Meera. He often wondered why, as they two couldn't be any more different from each other. He had always lived with his brother and Dadi as his parents spent most time travelling when they were alive.
Meera on the other hand was raised in a big joint family. He always had all the luxury and money at his disposal while Meera learned from a small age that she had to be happy with what she had. But the probably most striking thing was that Yash was a lazy bum and Meera a hard working bookworm. She was near completing her degree and easily got annoyed with distractions. Yash never understood how Meera could give up her dream of becoming a fashion designer just because of her parents' dream of seeing her as a doctor. Maybe it was her selflessness and simplicity that made her stand-out among all the city girls.
"But I am sure your highness wouldn't mind drinking a cup of coffee with me." Yash bowed theatrically which made Meera blush a little. They talked a while about Meera's soon-to-come exams and Yash's new excuse not to work. At this point, Meera scolded Yash for not taking up any responsibility.
"When will you get serious about life, Yash?"
"When you will agree on going on a date with me, a proper one." His serious expression made Meera feel uncomfortable. She knew Yash since she moved to Delhi and always found him reliable every time she needed help. She knew is nature and hence never took his flirting seriously. But there were time like these where she couldn't be sure.
"Yash, I have exams from next week. I don't have time." Meera tried to argue.
"Fine, but you could spare an hour or so for dinner, I am not asking for more." Not having any choice, she agreed. Yash set his mind to make this dinner special. Maybe then Meera would take him more seriously.Life was going on well for everyone. Due to his reduced workload, Maan had more free time to his disposal which he liked to use in one way only. He thought about Geet. At first it was general things about her but the more time he spend around her, he couldn't help himself noticing that apart from the hard working person that she was, she was also very attractive. Her beauty lay in her simplicity and Maan would often catch himself staring at her when she was not looking. One thing that he noticed about her, though, was the fact that her clothes were never colourful but sombre looking. It was as if she was in mourning and this thought did not sit well with him. On one of the rare occasions when he had witnessed her laughing, he had fallen in love with it and her happiness made him a happy person, too.
To his misfortune, Geet was really just interested in work which meant that every time he started a conversation on a topic other than work, she would cut it short. Maan wanted to know more about this enigma called Geet but he just didn't know how. The invitation to the opening of a restaurant seemed one golden opportunity. Maan summoned Geet and told her that they were going out for dinner. He had enjoyed seeing her flustered and stammer and put an end to her misery by saying:
"Geet, calm down! Mr Das has invited us to the opening ceremony of his restaurant. I have to go and it would be totally inappropriate not to bring someone with me."
"But sir… how can I… I mean how can I go?"
"Now why can't you go? You are a young and beautiful woman who, I am sure, will look very nice in this sari." He handed her a box, nervous whether or not she will accept it. Geet opened it and gasped. Inside was a pure white sari with silver work on it. As simple as it may look, Geet was sure that it must have been expensive.
"Sir, I cannot…"
"Before you say you can't take a gift from your employee, plz think of it as a gift from your friend."
That had been the start. The dinner had been that between two friends and Maan found himself enjoying with Geet, who turned out not to look nice but absolutely stunning in the sari. Later that night, Geet sat in front of her dressing table and was looking at herself. With her hair open, a little kohl around her eyes and simple jewellery, she admitted to look pretty. But it wasn't her looks that had caused her usually pale cheeks to flush. It was the happiness she had felt during the last two hours with Maan. Their talks had been about various topics and even though their interests differed, they could say something about everything they picked to talk about. Geet sighed. A day had come to an end but for her it felt as if it was the beginning to something new. Nothing spoke about turning a new leave and being free but after a life time of being imprisoned within her mind, freedom seemed a concept too alien.Title:- Beyond the Gavel Chapter 1: The Verdict of First Impressions ⸻ Delhi High Court, Courtroom No. 7 9:32 AM, Monday Morning The courtroom...
