Across d state line in Punjab,Geet shivered as she entered d door to hr sis Anjali's aptmnt.D hair on d back of hr neck was standng on end,as if she were bing watched.It ws d same sense she felt everytym she came to visit hr sis,though dis tym,she could almost feel d presence of sum1 lurkng in d darkness of d stairwell.She lukd around den shook off d feelng.She ws beyond

tired fm hr late work schedule & frequent visits to hr sick niece Swati. She enterd d quiet aptmnt.Anjali ws curled on d couch asleep.Geet pulld a blanket over hr b4 she went to d doorway of Swati's bedrum.Swati's baffld docs hd finally given up d day b4 with a grim prognosis dat Swati wd b probably die within d week.Geet felt d black witch Naintara's curse: d coldness of d shadows crowding d corners & stufd animals.Earlier, in broad dayl8,she'd venturd in2 d rum to snag a toy & shovd it in a box,running out b4 d dark shadows cd claim hr 2. She balled up hr fists,she never suspectd Naintara's cruelty ran so deep as 2 target a 4 yr old. Damn u Dev,as usual,u tuk d easy way out & left me al1 to deal with d witch. If he htnt jumpd off d bridge 2 yrs ago,she'd push him & Naintara off d bridge herself 2 mk sure dey both stayd out of hr life fr gud.D outcum of d doomed affair and d love triangle of Geet & Dev & Naintara dat made sweet,innocent Swati ill,pale & limp on d bed b4 Geet md hr stomach roil. Geet whispered to hr sis,"I'll fix dis Anjali di, i swear it." Anjali muffled wid drowsy response,"No1 can help hr."Geet turned to face Anjali,who pushed herself up fm d couch.Geet said,"I know i can.I did sum research & am going up d Delhi fr dat...!"Anjali asked eagerly,"U think u found a doc?"Geet replied vaguely,"May b,"unwillint to tel Anjali dat no doc can cure Swati.Anjali said,"Hurry Geet...!"Geet said confidently,"I wil dee i promise.TC i wont b g1 long."Geet tuk 1 last look at Swati's tiny frame & Anjali's haunted features & left d aptmnt for d parking lot she cd feel d coldness of d box...
