Part 2
She looked down at her hands and saw his name in the dark mehndi that adorned her palms upto her
elbows. He loved her deeply and the almost black colour was another reminder as her mother put it.
As her sister and mom came to take her down, with Sharu chirping happily, dressed in a pink baby
sharara, she looked forward to a new beginning, her new beginning-with Dev by her side and hoped by
her soul that this time, she would be blessed with an ordinary life, with the simple pleasures of life that
she loved to enjoy.
But, as she stood on top of the stairs, waiting to go down, she couldn't help the voice in her heart that
was gnawing at her and asking her, Are you really ready for the 'New beginning'? Did you ever reach the
end of the world that you lived in-the world that YOU still live in?
She had no answer, or rather she didn't want to think about the answer! All she could do was look
at Sharu and tell that inner voice-our Daughter is ready for the new beginning. She deserves a new
beginning, she deserves a father.
Geet thought that was an answer enough for any voices, any questions her heart might dare to conjure.
But, when did heart listen to mind's logics? Never! So, there was that voice again, painstakingly pointing
out that she had said our daughter instead of her; and even Geet couldn't say that the second person in
the our was Dev! It wasn't! But, what choice did she have?
She thought back to the time when Dev had proposed to her, and she had felt the warmth soaking
through her. She tried to reason with herself that the warmth had indeed been something with the
semblance of atleast the beginning of love!
Really? So, was it the kind of flutter that she would feel whenever HE came close to her? Was it even a
fraction of the warmth that would envelope her when she was in HIS arms? Could the security she felt
in Dev's arms be compared to the feeling of blissful abandonment that HIS embrace offered? Didn't the
chaste peck that Dev planted on her lips prick her heart somewhere? Was that smile due to his lips on
hers or due to one of the hundreds of beautiful memories of the kisses HE had showered her with that
she had chosen to remember just at that moment to ignore the urge to get away?
There was no urge to get away! Geet tried telling herself.
There was no disgust towards Dev Geet; but there was an inescapable feelin that it wasn;t right! That
was the reason you tried losing yourself in HIS memories, trying to imagine HIM there! Accept it!
That's not true!
If it isn't, why didn't you kiss him back? Why did you just settle for a friendly peck on his cheek?
Silence'.
Will you be able to give yourself to him completely? Or will you try resorting to memories each time he
would come close to you?
Geet no longer had any answers for she knew the inner battle that raged within her was never hers to
win!
Sharu needs him!
That's it! That was the end of the argument! A mother had won; would always win over the woman,
who was still foolishly in love with the man who was no longer in her life. She still couldn't, even in her
thoughts, manage to say he had abandoned her!
It was the truth that the whole world had told her time and again, and she had pretended to belive
them, to agree with them silently coz she couldn't prove otherwise. He had left no way for her to defend
him. Yet her heart defended him in full spirit. She couldn't make herself belive that he could heartlessly
leave her behind. She couldn't belive that the love they shared didn't mean anything to him; she
couldn't believe that he didn't think of her. This train of thoughts always lead o one conclusion-he must
be in some trouble.
She didn't want to think that way today, for she would go back to worrying for him, cursing herself that
she had somehow failed him! Failed to look for him well, failed to find his whereabouts.
Lost in her thoughts, she hadn't noticed that the chatter around her subsided, that the place was
engulfed in deathly silence as everyone tried making sense of what was happening in front of their eyes.
Her train of thoughts was broken by an enthusiastic squeal of "Dev uncle" from Sharu. She looked
around confused and was even more shocked to find Dev, dressed as her groom, standing beside her,
looking at her with an unfathomable look on his face.
"I want to tell you something before we get married Geet", he said and she simply nodded noticing the
seriousness on his face.
Sending a reassuring smile her mother's way, telling her its okay, she lead Dev to her room.
"Whats the matter Dev?", she asked worriedly.
"Why are you marrying me Geet?"
"What kind of question is this Dev?", she answered baffled for lack of a better response.
When he persisted, she slowly started, "You are good person Dev. I have immense respect for you. Any
girl would be lucky to have you in her life, your love for me is eveident. You have accepted Sharu, and
Sharu loves you too!"
"And you? You didn't say anything about yourself Geet? Do YOU love me?"
Taking a deep breath, Geet decided to be somewhat honest with him.
"Dev, I never told you I loved you. In time, I hope I will. I trust you, I respect you, and I sincerely hope I
have it in me to love you the way you love me."
"What if it doesn't happen Geet? Do you think you are ready to love me? Do you think you have opened
your heart for me now?"
Geet remained silent.
"Sharu loves me but will you able to accept me as her father? What about the guardian angel that Sharu
has seen just in photographs but still loves to death?", he questioned her.
"You'you know about it? Dev, don't worry. I just wanted Sharu's birth father to be a part of her life,
even if a small one. She will accept you as her father. She loves you, she takes you as her own. You
aleady are an important part of her life", she said.
Dev stepped closer to Geet and took her hands in his, turned her hands to show her mehndi adorned
palms.
"When you were getting this pattern made and my name was supposed to be written, why did you get
DD written instead of Dev?"
"You name id Dev Dhingra, so these are your initials", Geet replied not meeting his eyes.
"Dev turned her face to him, looked into her eyes and sincerely asked, "What do these initials stand for
Geet?"
She was silent once again, not able to lie to his face, because though she had told everyone else, and
herself that it was Dev's name, deep down she knew that's not what the DD in her hand meant to her.
"Its Dusht Danav isn't it?", Dev asked, more like said, for he knew the answer very well. In the early days
of their friendship, once they had talked about HIM for hours; it had been their anniversary and Geet
had been very vulnerable. She had opened up to him for the first time that day, sharing that part of
her life he could see she cherished in her heart. She had shared with him stories about how he would
tease her, scare her making her name him Dusht Danav. She had told him how he would pretend to be
annoyed by the name while secretly he had loved it.
Geet could no longer stopped the tears that had been threatening to flow since the first mention of him
as Dev had brought up Sharu's Guardian Angel, as Geet had renamed him Sharu.
"Why did you write DD on your palms Geet?", Dev asked very softly, with no hint of bitterness in his
voice, his tone coaxing her to accept the truth which was blatantly obvious.
"Because I love him! Because I couldn't break the promise I made to him on our fist Karva Chauth that I
would the only name that would ever adorn my hands would be DD-the name I gave him. Because even
though he left me, I can't let him go'I can't let him go", she sobbed silently and turned around, only to
be engulfed by a pair of arms that she could recognize anywhere.
Even though it had been four years since she had been embraced by that warmth, the smell, it was fresh
in her heart like yesterday. Even though she couldn't bring herself to reason his presence, her hands
wove themselves around the torso of the man she loved till now, and would love till her took her last
breath.
She was not able to distinguish dream from reality-even though the reality was clear in her eyes, she
thought it was a dream-too good to be true as she kept her eyes closed and sobbed uncontrollably for
the love she had lost.
Realizing that she was in a trance, he finally whispered, "Geet'."
She jolted out of his embrace as if burned, not believing her eyes as a whisper escaped her own
lips, "Maan'."
She was hallucinating again-like the hundreds of times she had done in the past few years. That could be
the only explanation for what she was looking a right now.
But, the difference in the hallucination and what was in front of her was stark.
The man who stood In front of her was scarred, battered, but her Maan. The face was notably different-
rugged due to time, but the eyes held the familiar love-just a 100 times more intense.
When she couldn't make sense of anything, she falt faint and swayed, but was immediately supported
by the same pair of arms and she felt home. She forgot everything-just stood there, soaking his warmth,
his love, his mere presence.
After what could have been an hour or just a secong, she didn't know, he pulled away. It was then that
she realized the gravity of the situation. She didn't know how, but her Maan was back, and she was
getting married to Dev.
Dev-the guy who had been her support, her ray of hope in the darkness that had threatened to engulf
her.
As she turned to look at Dev with a pained expression, she was surprised to find him standing there with
a calm look on his face. She could see the pain in his eyes, but he wasn't shocked, as if he was expecting
this to happen; as if he was prepared for it.
Reading the question in her eyes, Maan spoke, "He knows! He knows me, in fact, he is the one who
convinced me to come here"
Looking at the baffled expression on her face, Dev sighed and related to her how he had met Maan the
very same morning, rather how Maan had found him.
He told her that Maan had been in a Pakistan jail for years as he was captured on his last under-cover
mission, and that the Indian government had no clue about his whereabouts. They had tried to find him
but weren't successful as they couldn't raise a hue and cry for confidentiality reasons while Maan had
been lodged under a different name in the prison there.
He told her how Maan would have still been languishing in the jail without a trail had his case not been
noticed by a Pakistani social activist who took up hi case and proved him innocent in the court.
He told her how Maan had returned, contacted his office to get back to India, and had asked them about
her and Sharu the first thing he could. He had been shattered when he was informed that Geet was
getting married but had been happy for her happiness. He had neither expected, nor wished for her to
wait for him and rob Sharu of the chance at a better future.
He told her how Maan couldn't stop himself from making sure that the guy she was getting married to
was worthy of her and Sharu and had come to meet him and had been recognized by Dev.
He told her how Maan had been reluctant to come back, thinking Geet had moved on and not wishing
to disrupt her life with his presence again. He told her how Maan had planned to leave the city after Dev
and Geet got married and that he had forced Maan to come see for himself how she was still Maan ki
Geet and could never be Dev ki Geet.
All the while, listening to Dev, Geet had been looking at Maan, reading the array of amotions that she
could see on his face-guilt, anger, remorse, love, pain.
She couldn't help but feel angry at Maan's thoughts of staying away but quickly regained her
composture realizing he only had her well-being in mind. Nevertheless, there would be time to talk
about it with him.
She turned to Dev, not able to decide how to talk to him, "Dev'"
But, Dev cut her off saying, "I know you love him geet, you always will! And I respect that. I Know you
both ae meant to be. You should not feel guilty/sorry for me. Look at it this way, had we been married
today, are you certain you could have loved me back ever?"
Geet's eyes gave him the answer-NO!
She coukd never love him back the way he loved her.
And Geet realied that Dev was right. She would have caused him pain, by not reciprocating his feelings.
He deserved more-much more. He dersved love more than respect.
"I hope you find someone who would love you Dev!", she spoke with sincerity.
"I already have!", Dev replied lightly shocking geet.
Dev chuckled and said, "Sharu!"
Geet smiled and nodded.
"Sharu loves you Dev and always will. You will always be a very important part of her life. You will be
her God father", Maan spoke with his eyes shining with gratitude for the man who had selflessly given
away his happiness to him, to make sure Geet was happy.
Just then Sharu came running into the room shouting, "Dev uncle! Dev Uncle! Mumma!"
Maan looked on in awe, with tears as she jumped into Dev's arms and started demanding ice-cream
since she had been waiting patiently as he had asked her to for so long.
Dev took Sharu to Maan and Sharu finally noticed the man who looked oddly familiar to her. Suddenly
her eyes lit up and she shrieked, "Angel!! Mamma! Dekho photo wale Gaurdian Angel", clapping her
hands.
Maan happily took her in his arms as Dev silently handed her to him and left while Geet came upto
Maan and Sharu and said, "Haan beta! And your Guardian angel is your Daddy"
Sharu looked at him with her big eyes and pouted and said in a small voice, "Then why does he not stay
with me?"
Maan couldn't control any longer as he hugged his little angel tightly and promised, "Ab Daddy kahin
nahin jaaenge, hamesha apni prince ke paas rahenge", covering her face with kisses.
Sharu had a huge grin on her face as she giggled when his beard tickled her.
Maan held Geet's hand, brought her to his side as he finally felt complete.
A few months later
"Daddy tez chalo! My horsy has to be Phaaashhht", shrieked Sharu as Maan took her around the house
of his back, as her horse.
Geet sat with Dev, looking at her family, her life her happiness, her eyes shining with love.
Dev looked at the scene in front of him, the happiness on their faces and he knew he had made the right
decision that day all those months ago.
Granted it had been tough and it still hurt a bit, but the pain was more than compensated for by the
immense happiness he felt when he saw Geet and Sharu so happy. He had been a part of Sharu's life as
he had promised-he was her Godfather and loved to spoil her and was content waiting for love to find
him again.
Maan was thankful to the Almighty for giving him a secing chance at life.
Geet was happy with The New beginning she had made 8 months ago and now she was sure she would
cherish each moment of her love-filled life.
How was it?
