Chapter 6...
"Yes doctor, everything is fine you don't need to come I'll call you later thank you doctor." He put the phone back in to his pocket. Turned to face her giving a stern, You-better-keep-your-word-or-else look.
Geet quickly broke her stare and started to fidget with the corner of her scarf.
"Okay let's go then I'll take you home." He stood up holding his hand out for her to get up.
Geet hesitantly accepted it and stood up. He felt her shiver and tighten his grip on her. Stubborn woman she will never listen to him. He calmed himself and asked gently if she will manage to walk. She nodded nervously and they slowly made out of the cabin.
It was not merely few steps and she stumbles in her steps. Maan didn't even bother asking her in the next instant Geet was in his cradle. His Jaw clenched Geet noticed and dared not to protest and closed her eyes.
Outside the night was dark; Geet inhaled the serene air and felt alive again. Maan looked closely at her every move. He put her down as she stood waiting; he gently turned Geet to face him and cupped her face in his hand. "I can't believe how close I came to losing you tonight. A few seconds difference.."
"A few seconds difference and I'd probably be hurt or lose my..." she brought her hands to touch her abdomen and looked at him with her eyes shining fresh. I would be, if you hadn't been so close by.
"Shush.." He placed a finger on her lips, other hand still on her forearm easing the dreaded feeling of losing either of them.
She felt so tired, so very tiered, but managed a weak laugh as her stomach growled.
"Someone seems to be Hungry." Maan teased.
Geet chuckled with teary eyes downcast.
"You cry a lot Geet and laugh at the same time." He smeared the last of the tears with the heels of his palm.
"You're the most exasperating man I've ever met, Maan Singh Khurana. You know that? Always running to my rescue and making sure I'm okay. Always saying the right thing and doing the right thing. You make it very difficult for me to walk away from you."
"Who says you are supposed to?" He pressed his lips on her forehead then led her to his car. He opened the door for Geet. He saw her not move, he glanced at her with questioning, "I can go on my own, you don't have to drop me." She finished hesitantly.
Maan took deep sigh and closed his eyes to control his temper; he didn't want to end this night arguing and fighting with her again. "Do you have any idea what time it is Geet?" He hissed in calm tone. Geet, innocently nodded, It's past Nine now do you see anyone around waiting for you that Geet madam will come out at any time and we will give her the ride?"
Geet pouted and went to sit inside the car without uttering a single word. Maan blew out the holding breath in relief. "Glad she agreed at least stubborn woman."
He muttered and she snapped her head to him. He quickly raised his hands in truce and turned quickly to get to his side before her change of mind.
The drive was getting awfully quiet and so does Geet, Maan wonder what she was thinking he noticed her staring out the window with her head laid on the head rest. Before he could say his phone rang. He saw it was Dadima's phone and before she can drill him he thought of something.
"Geet, could you please answer the phone you know I can't I'm driving. "But Maa um Sir how could I?
"Why you don't know how to use mobile." He teased her with mock shock. She rolled her eyes at him. He quickly added not interested in her lecture.
"It could be important answer it quickly Geet." He rushed her and she did without looking who it was.
"H he ello.."
"What is this Maan, you said you are coming home an hour ago and..who is this Maan?"
"Um uh Dadima."
"Geet? Geet dear it's that you?
"Yes it's me. Maan sir is driving so I'm answering the phone."
"How are you Geet my child? Where have you been? Where are you going?"
Too many questions she thought the elderly lady asked and how can she answer her.
"I'm doing fine Dadima, um we got late and Maan Sir is dropping me home. It's too late and um a and no taxi or auto was.."
"Very good, at least he is doing something good. Why don't you come home, I assume like Maan you must have not eaten either right. I want to talk to Maan place the phone to his ears Geet."
Before she can protest Dadima she demanded something out of proportion. She turned shocked and looked at Maan, he all the while keeping his attention to her conversation. "What's the matter Geet?"
"Geet"
"Yes Dadima, here." She placed the phone hesitantly to Maan's ears. Her fingers touching his skin she felt heat spreading in her face trying to concentrate not to drop the phone she steadied her hand with other. He glanced at her once and answered the phone and looks straight on his driving.
"Yes Dadima, I'll be home soon. Okay Dadima as you wishes." He turned to glance on Geet again she turned her face quickly to other side.
"Geet I'm done talking."
"Huh? Yes."
She quickly removed her hand and switched the phone off and put it back in the cup holder. She started rolling the corner of her dupatta again. Maan smiled at her nervousness.
"Are you alright Geet? What's bothering you?" He crooked his neck to view her face.
"I um I mean to say Dadima wants me to come home.
H..how can I?
"How else, in the car and I'm driving." Maan teased her he knew very well her hesitant after the way their engagement was called off and the entire incidents that happened after that. It has not been easy for either of them.
"But Maan," He expectantly looked her but it lived short as it born when he heard her finish with, "Sir?"
"Maaannn." Annoyed he screamed his own name to remind her to stop calling him "SIR".
She stared straight on the road. He reached for her hand on her lap squeezing it little, "Relaxed Geet. It's not that you are going there first time."
She turned to him with the frown, what seems a worry on her forehead he understood her unsaid words. "You have been there on the festive night after that." He noticed her eyes moist again with the reminder of that night where he had said he hates her.
He guiltily reminisce the action towards her. Every memory seems to have painful moments, he has torture her enough along what she suffered in her small life.
"I'm Sorry." The voices echoed in unison.
They both smiled finally. As they continue to drive Maan thought to surprise Geet. He turned on the music. It played a very old song.
It was so apt for the moment for them. They looked at each other in agreement; he reached for her hand yet again.
They arrived home in silence for the rest of the journey; it was the journey the one night gave was the solace with each other.
It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart.
Without saying a word, you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you don't say a thing
You say it best when you say nothing at all...
