3. Disagreements.
Maan pulled her along the room into far corner near the window. She could see the pool from there. With the lights, it really looked beautiful. But her appreciation of the scenery was stopped by the hand that jerked her to face him. The faint glow of the pool side illumination that was cast on his face gave him a harsh beauty, even with the anger that emanated from him. Something, a strange awareness flashed in her heart. She had worked with men before, had worked double hard in fact to establish herself as more than a pretty face, but she had never felt such an awareness...an awareness of the contrast of her feminine self against a man.
"What the hell are you up to?" he demanded furiously releasing her.
Geet rubbed her arms where she suddenly felt the loss of his warm hands. "I thought we should talk over another time before I approached Mr. Sinha."
"By proposing to my brother? What is it? Any Khurana is acceptable, even a married one?"
"Oh! Stop it Maan," she glared at him. "Why do men always jump into wrong conclusions?"
"Are you telling me you didn't propose to my brother?" he regarded her with a stern expression.
"For your information, I didn't propose to Yash." Then dropped her glance, "Well, not exactly."
"Then what would you 'Exactly' call it?"
"You are deliberately being difficult." She felt a surge of anger. "I thought it was you. It was..." she pushed back her glasses. "It was a natural mistake. Perfectly reasonable."
"So you couldn't tell us apart? What happened to your infallible ability to make the right judgement?"
She felt like stamping her foot. How could he with mere words shatter her years of experience of controlling her emotions? "In case you have not realized yet, you two are identical twins!"
"Meera could tell us apart."
"Of course she should. She is married to Yash." She retorted.
"She could from the beginning." Maan continued stubbornly. "The very first time she saw me she knew I was not Yash."
"Well good for her!" she retorted. She started to pace in front of him, making the glasses slide down her nose. With an infuriated sigh she took them off. It made her vision blur a bit, which she felt was good since she no longer had to face a focussed intimidating glare. "I saw you for the first time this afternoon and that too hardly for half an hour. How is that supposed to help me distinguish between you and your brother?"
"You said you had me investigated. Didn't you see our photos in the office... how did you think there was two images of me in the same snap? Camera trick?" he mocked. "It is regrettable that your infamous logical thinking did not help to correct your mistake."
"I did correct it!"
"Of course you did. When you slammed into me! But a little too late don't you think since you had already blabbed about your crazy marriage proposal."
Now she understood the reason behind his unreasonable accusation and she relaxed. "Oh! You are mad about that?"
"Yes."
"Just tell them it was a business proposal and you refused." She suggested.
He shook his head in negation, "you don't know my family or you wouldn't say so. My parents had 6 boys and a girl. Do I need to say more?"
She stared at him blankly.
"Six siblings Geet. They wouldn't let the matter drop until they get the truth out of me. Then each one would have to give their gyan on the situation!"
"Oh! Now I get it!" she dismissed the matter with a careless wave of her hand. "They will tease you. I didn't have such a relation with by brother."
"I'm not concerned about their teasing Geet. We do that all the time. But what will happen if the word gets out that you proposed to me?"
"Will that happen? Can't you tell your family..."
"It won't let it slip, but they will have their fun discussing it at length. Which may fall into the ears of some eavesdropping staff..."
"Oh!" she hadn't foreseen that.
"Have you considered how your uncle might feel if he comes to hear about it?"
She put the glasses back and stared at him. He was intuitive she had to give him that. But what he didn't know was...
A slight movement at the door drew their attention. It was Mr. Malhotra who was the event manager.
"I'm sorry for interrupting. But I need to talk to Mr. Khurana."
The sudden stillness and the stiffening of his posture caught her attention.
"What is it?" she asked.
"It is something that I have to..."his eyes spoke of his reluctance.
"It is all right Mr. Malhotra. I understand. I was leaving any way."
"Leaving..! But the food is not yet served. Why do you want to leave when the party has hardly..."
"Don't interfere, Geet. It doesn't concern you ."
Then she understood. She looked at Maan who had put on the face of arrogance and indifference and realized it may not have been the first time that he faced this. Her felt the indignation at his humiliation as her own.
"Mr. Malhotra, you are not so cruel that you are going to devoid me of my date for the evening, are you?" she asked sweetly walking forward to place her hand on his sleeve.
"No ma'am..." he stammered. "But there are some people..."
"Don't worry about that. I am sure Mrs. Dheekshit wouldn't take it kindly that Handas left the party without having food."
"I'm sure that is right ma'am." He seemed disturbed even at the prospect.
"That is settled then." She smiled with the benevolence a queen might bestow on her subject, which had the impact of the subject flushing with gratitude. "And Mr. Malhotra, could you do me another teeny weeny favour? Could you please rearrange the seating for dinner so that my uncle and I would be seated with the Khuranas?"
"Of course ma'am. I will see to it immediately." He walked away in a hurry to do her bidding.
Maan couldn't help but feel amused by Geet's tactics. It was a treat to watch her in action. He knew who was behind the attempt to humiliate him and it now it became his responsibility to warn her.
"It wasn't necessary, but thank you. I must say I am impressed."
"I didn't do that to impress you."
"I know. Nonetheless it was great to see Miss Geet Handa in action. I can just imagine how interesting your board meetings would be." He paused to tilt her face with a knuckle under her chin, "But now you should know why I can't be involved. I'm sorry but my answer is still no."
"It is okay," she didn't like the disappointment she felt at his refusal. It shouldn't have mattered, his rejection of her proposal, because it was just like any other business deal.
"It is not personal, you understand?" he asked and she nodded. "There is another thing...I know it is none of my business, but I suggest you should reconsider your decision to approach Arjun Sinha. He...your plan of a contract marriage will definitely not work ... he may accept it but the condition in itself will be a challenge that he cannot resist... he... he doesn't take refusal lightly...in the end you may find that you have bitten off more than you could chew." She looked at him but didn't answer.
The music started playing and couples started to move to the dance floor. "You need to be seen enjoying the party," she said, changing the subject. "Come let us join the dancers. This you can do right?" she took his hand before he could answer and pulled him along as she joined the dancing couples.
