Chapter 7
Wedding Day
Along with smile of happiness, lines of worry and tension adorned face of Daadima. She woke and did an ardaas to Babaji to let this day pass peacefully. It was this very day, two years ago when her grandson had stopped being alive. This very day when a cruel hand of fate had taken his happiness away. Today, she wanted to welcome the same happiness with open arms. Today and old woman wanted her family to come alive again.
With new horizons on the view, Savitri Devi embraced the new day. In her quest to paint this day with a new brush, she had ensured that nothing today reminded Maan of the fateful day. She had kept all the ceremonies short and sweet. Colors, themes, length and timing of each and every function had been different.
But still many hearts beat with fear along with anticipation when it was time to leave for the wedding. It was the moment when news of Poonam's accident had reached them. Savitri Devi was a strong woman and with renewed strength she just asked Meera to accompany Maan and Dev. They sat in a decorated car which had been used instead of a ghodi, now a bitter reminder of past.
Savitri Devi herself joined Krishankant and his wife and daughter, chacha-chachi and sister of Poonam. They were more than happy that finally Maan had found peace and was ready to move ahead in life. Krishankant had been very enthusiastic. He had not only agreed to be part of baraat but also insisted that all fruits and vegetables were sourced from Madhavpur, the village they belonged to.
Maan clenched his teeth. He was well aware of his daadima's efforts but nothing could blind away the moment when he had just sat on the horse, when Dev had got the phone call, when Meera had let the pooja thal fall down, when Poonam had caught fire.
Meera gently placed her hand on Maan's shoulder and Dev squeezed his hand. He pulled together his erratic heartbeat as the wedding venue came in sight.
Geet looked absolutely stunning in her pinkish-reddish lehnga complimenting Maan in his green and golden sherwani. Ceremonies started with exchange of garlands. And then the chants started. Pheras and Kanyadaan solemnizing a lifetime of togetherness and promises were done.
Till now Maan had held himself quite well. But just like last time, one moment changed it all. Beads of sweat shone on his forehead, his heart stopped beating and something died inside him again. His entire being repulsed and with a finality he knew he had made a mistake.
A simple gesture of sindoor dabbi in front of him made him realize that he has not moved on and he can probably never do. At that very moment, he just wanted to run away from there.
His hands shook as images of a helpless girl in pain lying on the hospital bed came to his vision. All he could see was he filling maang of his Poonam just before they wheeled her into the OT. All he could hear was his own words, his own promises he had made to her at that moment. A moment before they took her for the operation. The last moment he felt her love, her warmth….her breath.
That day was clear to him. He had rushed to Madhavpur with a team of doctors from Delhi on hearing upon her accident. He knew that no one including herself and her family expected him to be there or marry her anymore. She was severely burnt. But her scars were not just physical and along with giving pain to her it gave pain to his heart and soul.
By then he had madly fallen in love with her. Starting from engagement up to that fateful day, he had accepted her as his life partner and some physical scars were not going to take his Poonam away from him.
He had sat holding her hand gently. Tears spilled from her eyes. He had told her that everything will be fine. He had shown her the sindoor dabbi……sindoor dabbi which Meera had given to him. He remembered his words – "It's our wedding day today, Poonam". She had just looked away not trying to face him. She had tried to convince him. Told him she was not beautiful anymore. But he told her that he was there for her. That his love will not diminish or reduce ever, sance the circumstances. "You are my life partner Poonam….most beautiful one…always there for me…who knows me more than myself" He had asked a gift from her on their wedding day…. a gift of pain.
And then, he had filled her maang. Bright red vermillion adorning her forehead. He had done it as his right….and hers…
Meera and choti had decorated the hospital with flowers. Dev had distributed sweets and he had signed the papers for Poonam's surgery.

But she hadn't come back. All the specialists and the doctors could not save her and she succumbed to her injuries. He had not been able to fulfill his promises.
Daadi saw frozen face and hand of Maan. With a thudding heart, she gently guided Maan's hands to Geet's maang. Maan looked up with a jerk to see red color in her forehead, marking their wedding.
He automatically finished the ceremony by tying mangalsutra around Geet's neck as Daadi and Meera guided him.
But even as he did that, Maan wondered and shook his head to make sense of it all. Two years ago, his gesture at the hospital was not legally marriage. But it was marriage to him. And today, just a few seconds ago, he had got legally married. But was this marriage?
Maan stayed numb and like a soulless body got his bride into KM. People were busy in laughing, talking and enjoying while his resolve to go through the mechanics of this marriage crumbled.
Initially Geet was very upset as Bidai took place but later during the day she noticed Maan's distant and aloof demeanor. She shook her head, just assuming like everything else her dusht danav probably did not like people and ceremonies. Finally she was relieved when she was taken to her room and asked to wait for her husband.
Maan sat through the various ceremonies still reeling with the effects of what had happened during marriage. But along with pain, his heart burdened further seeing his new bride. Where did she fit in and what was her fault in this? But he knew that he could just not pick up the pieces and walk away. Her words floated into his mind - "I truly believe that there is nothing more important than truth in any relationship be it friendship or anything else"
He walked with heavy feet towards the door and stopped momentarily before taking a resolve and pushing the door open. But even steel walls would have broken down seeing Geet as she sat waiting for him. "What has he done?" His already burdened soul suffocated further and he felt as if breath knocked out of him.
