TRPs are important for only one reason. They tell companies which show is popular but dont necessarily tell them anything else. Depending on this information companies in India set up their advertising budgets for each channel, time slots and shows. Higher the TRPs more money demanded by the channels for advertising in those slots.

However, in UK and many other western countries, big companies like UniLever, P&G and many more do not rely on these ratings. They do their own research before deciding on advertising spends. UK also has a different way of measuring the shows popularity which is slightly better than one in India but again not full proof.

Unfortunately in India there is no better method in place therefore they have to make do with TAM ratings or TRPs. Another set back in India is that even today many houses get their channels not through satellite discs or settop boxes but through a local provider. This makes it difficult to get right number for any show.

I do think that with intenet penetration increasing not just in India but worldwide.. there will be a time when even the TV channels will have consider this option. Infact we already know that every channel in India either got a parallel you-tube channel running or in case of star they have star-player. I think people from outside India who watch this show should try and watch it on star-player cos dont forget they do have company sponserer on their as well...

l may be wrong but l have noticed GHSP has more popular sponsors than d number one show of Star One, does this not counted for a show's popularity?

It could show that at one time Geet was definitely very popular on Star One and still is.. but if the TRPs keep dropping then the sponsors might question the channel which in turn will question the PH about the shows poor performance... if things dont improve they get given a notice period to try and improve things.. failing which the show usually gets kicked out.. thus ending it.

But if the show keeps getting good advertising money despite poor TRPs it adds to the positive attitude toward it..

Wow..before the avg was at 0.5..now itz down to 0.4..well if they drag the track with no gripping storyline and not listen to their viewers this will happen..

If only they knew how large their international audience is!

And that is a really unfair of collecting TRPs in my opinion .. why would they use People-o-metres ? It makes absolutely no sense ... and here people were thinking just by switching on the TV when GHSP is on will they get TRPs..

I've been saying the same thing for months in this forum but no one paid attention.

These TAM monitoring systems are a few thousands only and are distributed amongst a cross-section of homes in the villages, towns and metros. And most homes in India have only one TV.

The fact that most serials have a rustic background points to the fact that most TAM meters are likely to be more in the small towns and villages...not cities.

Advertisers too depend on these findings to decide when and where to advertise.

It's not that easy really to find out who has these systems installed in their homes.

It explains why a serial like Geet may not find takers amongst the group chosen by TAM.
