BRI- thanks for posting this!!
🤗

online viewership has to be made official and taken into account..

TRP's do not give even an approx pic..

I don't know much of the technicalities so can't actually contribute to ideas on how they can do this.

will edit this and add

@Bri : thanks for bringing up this topic . Yes it is high time for the marketers to go with the new trends of marketing especially social media. Digital media marketing in India is still very far behind, and promoters still resort to the traditional forms of mktging and statistics for rating TRPs. Working in a marketing team and into social media, I know how difficult it is to project to the top management about using social media to promote services/products effectively. Reason is people are still stuck to the old methods of marketing. Hope such strategies changes and the Channels start using online viewer's stats etc to calculate the trps .

@Bri excellent post.
The TAM ratings are out dated especially for Starone shows where 80% of the viewership is online. I do not agree with the way sampling is done this case either. The sample is not representative of the total population as the online and overseas population is excluded from the sampling process. This is because there is not standard medium (like Hulu in the case of US shows) to measure the viewership. All the videos are uploaded on youtube or similar vehicles on an adhoc basis. I would strongly suggest Starone to get something similar to hulu and help us online viewers!

There is shift from appointment TV ( our boring old TV!) to content on demand (watch online whenever we want!) with the growing net savvy population. The US TV network CBS is targeting $37 million just from its online viewership. And how much are the indian channels making out of online viewership? ZERO! Almost all the US channels have a tie up with hulu where you can watch the latest episodes (Arrgh more like last week's episode😆😆) with few commercial breaks. Why can't the indian channels do this??? The star player does not play anywhere outside of India. So what's the point in having a star player? 😆

For a channel like Starone where almost all the programs are targeted at the youth, how can they just assume that all of the audience live in India and they watch the shows on TV? This maybe a very safe assumption for an Ekta show or any other melodrama, where the majority of the audience are old and watch the show on TV and live in India. This is why shows like Uttaran has skyrocketing TRPs (FYI, I have nothing against uttaran😆😆Please don't come with dandas behind me)

For advertisers who fund the show, it is a whole different scenario. All the shows are mainly funded by CPG (consumer product group - the regular consumer products that are advertised on tv during a show) advertisements. And the CPGs target only the local market. So, they would not worry about the audience outside India. But starone can definitely increase their ad revenues by going online. I do not understand when people like Mr Mirchandani will understand that it is EXTREMELY important for a channel like starone to go online. I DO NOT know what miracle are they waiting for😡
Phew, that was loooong!

Seems like there is gonna be a never ending debate as to the right or wrong of this, but the bottom line is that Channel ONLY cares about TRPs and advertisers seem to do the same.

Thanks bDgT for clearing us everything.

I couldnt believe are your sure they just prepare TRP just based on 8000 samples???

How can only 8000 samples represents a shows actual popularity?

There can be huge partiality if they do that and specially if they sample takes from rural areas as rural people dont like youth based shows. The channel can also influence to get high trp.

Is there any other rating system other than TRP that covers both online and offline?

Star One has a lot of online viewership. If the online videos are uploaded by Star One itself for users outside India within half hr of the episode airing the all Youtube links would stop. Online site for viewing videos can have sponsors, advertisements of corporates so star One can earn ad revenues... and with a huge internet viewer base, advertisers too will be largely benefitted.
Star One needs to cash in on the internet viewership.
