BEFORE I CONTINUE MY CHAPTER I WANT U ALL TO KNOW THE MEANING OF SAAT PHERE (SANSKRIT MEANING ~ SAPTHAPADI)

The Saptapadi (Sanskrit for seven steps/feet, c.f. Latin cognates septem+pedes) or the saat pheras is perhaps the most important component of Vedic Hindu weddings. The couple conduct seven circuits of the Holy Fire (Agni), which is considered a witness to the vows they make each othere.With each circuit, the couple makes a specific vow to establish some aspect of a happy relationship and household for each other.

1.To provide for food always.

2.To give you excellent health and energy.

3.Todained in Vedas, during your life time.

4.To give you happiness in life.

5.To make your cows and good animals grow in strength and in numbers.

6.To make all the seasons be beneficial to you.

7.To make the homams (sacrifices to be done in Holy Fire) to be performed by you in your life as ordained in Vedas, successful and free from hindrances.


A typical vow is

After crossing seven steps with me thus, you should become my friend. I too have become your friend now. I will never discard this friendship and you should also not do that. Let us be together always. Let us resolve to do things in life in the same manner and tread the same path. Let us lead a life by liking and loving each other, having good hearts and thoughts, and enjoying the food and our strong points together. Let us have undivided opinions. We will perform the vrithas united. Let us have same and joint desires. I will be Sama [one of the vedas]; you will be Rig [another Veda]. Let me be the Heaven; you be the Earth. Let me be the Shukla [Moon] and you be its wearer. Let me be the mind and you its spokesman [Vak]. With these qualities, you be my follower. You the sweet tongued, come to me to get good children and wealth

An Indian marriage is a symbol of purity, union of two different people, community and culture. All the Hindu marriages carry out similar rituals with slight difference. Each ritual that is carried out in a Hindu wedding has some meaning. The Seven Vows/Saat Phere also hold a vast meaning in the wedding ritual. The Seven Vows/Saat Phere are the rounds taken around the holy fire place by the bride and groom together. With every round they make one promise to their partner. This way they make seven promises. Types of Seven Vows/ Saat Phere

The custom of Seven Vows/Saat Phere has had a rich historical extravaganza to it. There are a total seven vows made during the Saat Phere - the seven rounds. In the first round or phera, the couple prays to God for plenty of nourishing and pure food. They pray to God to let them walk together so that they will get food. In the second round, the couple prays to God for a healthy and prosperous life. They ask for the physical, spiritual and mental health from God.

In the third Phera the couple prays to God for wealth. They ask God for the strength for both of them so that they can share the happiness and pain together. Also, they pray so that they can walk together to get wealth. In the fourth round the couple prays to God for the increase in love and respect for each other and their respective families. The bride and groom together pray for the beautiful, heroic and noble children from God in the fifth step. In the sixth holy round around the fire, the couple asks for the peaceful long life with each other.

In the final seventh round the couple prays to god for companionship, togetherness, loyalty and understanding between themselves. They ask God to make them friends and give the maturity to carry out the friendship for lifetime. The husband says to his new wife that now they have become friends after the Seven Vows/Saat Phere and they will not break their friendship in life.

Special Features

The fire place at the centre is considered as the holy and pure place. In every Hindu Marriage Seven Vows/Saat Phere are made by the bride and the groom. Theses vows were made in ancient times and they still hold a major importance in the marriage.

Description of a Perfect Bride (GEET):''

Solah shringar are the sixteen adornments of an Indian Hindu bride, which contribute to her complete beautification. Wedding has always been a fantasy for every girl. It is a dream, she is born with and wishes to realize with utmost care and precision. This can very well explain her urge to look her best on the D day. Moreover, it is considered that a girl starts her new life after marriage, so she should feel good about herself. This is why solah shringar is a mandatory practice for all the to-be brides.

Solah shringar are the sixteen adornments, which aim at making the bride look beautiful from head to toe. In fact the process itself pays attention on all her body parts, embellishing them stunningly. Thus, all the brides go through this complete makeover for that special day. So, for all the girls waiting to be brides, here is a quick look at the elating procedure of solah shringar.

* Firstly, the hair of the bride are properly oiled and washed. They are then dried and twined according to the wedding dress. Lastly, they are accentuated with Gajra, strings of flowers.
* The bride is given bath with a mixture of gram flour, turmeric powder, sandal powder and oil. This acts as a scrub and provides glow to her skin.
* After this she dons the wedding dress, which is usually in red color.
* This is followed by putting kajal in her eyes, to enhance their beauty.
* Now, her splendor is further highlighted by ornaments. She wears a mang tika or borla on her forehead, which is made of gold.
* Bindi is a must for the bride as it symbolizes dedication towards her husband.
* She also wears a nose ring in her left nostril, which is also an essential accessory.
* Necklace or Haar is a must and symbolizes prosperity.
* Ear rings or jhoomars are worn in accordance with the necklace. They are heavy and are supported with chain.
* Giving a more traditional look to the bride, armlets are worn on the upper part of the arms.
* Bangles both made of gold and glass are mandatory for a bride to wear as they signify the long life of her husband.
* A bride wears eight rings in both her hands, which are attached with a central flower or medallion that covers the upper part of the hand.
* Accentuating her curves, a waist band is a traditional jewelry worn by the bride
* One of the most sensuous and attention grabbing accessory worn by the bride is anklet. It is worn in both feet.
* Another important jewelry item to be worn is the toe ring. They are also a symbol of her marriage and are worn till her husband's death.
* Not to forget, one of the prettiest ways of accessorizing a bride is with the help of varied henna designs. Mehndi forms an integral part of any marriage.
