According to the law, Geet WAS raped. I think most people would be hesitant to accept that because their definition of 'rape' is very limited. It is not limited to just "consent/non-consent"...Here in the U.S., I think only a handful states recognize "Rape by Deception" as a crime.

Thanks Misfit...Yes it is a case of 'Rape by Deception' and it definately is a crime.

It is even more restrictive in this sense in the UK. The central issue (from what I recall from my law school days:)) revolves around consent and the sort of deception here. i.e. believing someone to be your husband would not really work in the UK courts I believe as the matrimonial state would not be relevant, whether they consented or not would be.

I think in countries like US, UK issues like consent, age would take precedence over marriage; the morality centered around sex (pre-marital or otherwise) is of no consequence. Wasn't there a case recently where an Arab Muslim man was convicted of because he had intercourse with a Jewish woman (making her think he was Jewish, not Muslim)?

So one thing is sure that laws changes with the countries....one crime may not be regarded as crime in other country?

Thus it really matters if you are been deceived or not....the only hitch is how to prove that one is been deceived. Hence I strongly condemn such acts in our indian society.

Good point...and I hope the Cv's are aware of this fact and incorporate it into the story..
This happens a lot in our country and people should be made aware of the seriousness of the crime.

Having said that, the word 'rape' is still very nebulous.

Why, even within a legal marriage, the courts refuse to accept rape charges against a husband who forces himself on an unwilling wife.

The best legal recourse that someone like Geet can have is to charge Dev with bigamy and slap charges of cheating and fraud against him.

Rape, as someone already mentioned, is seen in one light only in India....intercourse by force or intimidation and none was used on the show. Geet was doing her 'patni dharam' and lets face it, she loved Dev as much as a young girl would her new husband in an arranged marriage.

However, it's upto the CV's to bring out aspects of the Indian Penal Code into a show like this and educate us.

It's important for us to know what aspects and hues a rape can take and what legal rights and recourse women in countries like ours can have when faced with situations like this.

Btw, why was Geet's marriage conducted in such haste and secrecy?

I haven't watched the show from the beginning but I seem to recall a few scenes in FB where a lot of people attended Geet's mehendi or some such.

The hurdle geet will face is that there's no record of the marriage with no photos for proof or a certificate......unless they can track down the pundit who conducted the marriage....unless he's fake too!

The only hope, then, is Dev's mom who seems to have disappeared altogether!

Hmm, is this for real?? If it is, its very informative as this is not the case in the US as far as I have seen and reviewed. Now the pregnancy is disturbing to me. 😕
