Original Title:
Abortion/Planned Parenthood: The Flip Side of The Pregnancy Debate

For the other side of the DEBATE
:
In support of PREGNANCY

Writer's Note: I usually like to think of both sides of the debate as this is not about me or my individual beliefs or choices but about the field or realm of possibilities.

So here it is:

I am gonna raise an interesting and controversial point to this debate on "Pregnancy" not in the serial, but in real and may be, serial follows reality, we never know.

Today we all want the pregnancy track to go forward BECAUSE GEET herself wants the baby.

Let's put our difference of opinion aside and let's be logical, rational, and non judgmental.

Tomorrow, if she herself feels that she does not want this baby, and that she has a right to choose between carrying with her pregnancy or aborting it by her own will, would you support her decision?

Or would you consider, oh pregnancy is sacred and all that!

A woman has a right to choose. She also has a right to change her view after more thought given to it whether she wants to keep it or not is her option.

So what would you guys do? Support her? Or not?

I ask this because of the entire "Pro Life" and "Pro Choice" Debate that is happening/happened in some developed countries and Roe Vs. Wade case in the USA..

A modern woman can have a right to choose the way she wants to live her life. Even in India, there are cases of BY CHOICE ABORTIONS not only BY FORCE ABORTIONS.

If you take in this instance of Geet's, what Brij and all tried to do was BY FORCE ABORTION
whereas IF GEET herself decides tomorrow that she does not want the child, then should she have a CHOICE or NOT?

Abortion Law In India

Okay don't get devilish on me or even angelic on me, be acerbic or airy, no problemo! I always like Debate into new areas where we have not gone before, the sort of sacred ground!

Abortion Law in India some nuggets

All over the world, in developed nations like USA, CANADA etc., there have been vast amounts of time and energy spent in the "Pro Live" Vs. "Pro Choice" debates where Pro Life people argued that even a fetus had life and that it is the duty of the government to protect life and stop aborting the fetus while the "Pro Choice" community argued that the women should have a choice whether to carry the fetus or not and if that the fetus had life, so did the sperm have life - so it is a contentious point and that since it is the woman's body that carries the fetus she should be allowed decide if she wants it or not.

While debate is raging on these grounds, in India basically since 1971 abortion has been legalized on certain grounds as per "The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act" and the Supreme Court also has reiterated in some cases that the right to privacy is implicit in Article 21 of the Constitution and a right to abortion can be read from this right. It is submitted that a decision as to abortion may be entirely left with woman provided she is sane and attained majority. Only in cases where an abortion may affect her life, her freedom may be curtailed.

Subject to the provisions of sub-section (4) a pregnancy may be terminated by a registered medical practitioner,

(a) Where the length of the pregnancy does not exceed twelve weeks, if such medical practitioner, is, or

(b) where the length of the pregnancy exceeds twelve weeks but does not exceed twenty weeks, if not less than two registered medical practitioners are, of opinion formed in good faith

In the following conditions:
(1) As a health measure when there is danger to the life or risk to physical or mental health of the women;
(2) On humanitarian grounds ' such as when pregnancy arises from a sex crime like rape
where the anguish caused by such pregnancy shall be presumed to constitute a grave injury to the mental health of the pregnant woman or intercourse with a lunatic woman, or due to the failure of some or method used by any married woman or her husband for the purpose of limiting the number of children, the anguish caused by such unwanted pregnancy may be presumed to constitute a grave injury to the mental health of the pregnant woman.
(3) Eugenic grounds ' where there is a substantial risk that the child, if born, would suffer from deformities and diseases.

However, this act is so limiting in some cases, as the Niketa Mehta case proved which did not take into account the latest development in medical technology thus leading to doctors and human rights groups seeking changes in the law.

When Mehta family found that in 24th week the foetus had a heart block, they asked for Bombay High Court's permission to go for an abortion. But the court denied their plea based on MTP's limit of 20 weeks and not taking into consideration the new advances in medical technology. [Of course Nikiti had a miscarriage later causing much emotional trauma].

The Supreme Court later issued a notice to the central government to review the 38-year-old abortion law to make it possible to safely terminate a deformed foetus as late as 26 weeks into the pregnancy based on medical evidence like in western countries.

Geet - the Serial

In Geet serial, I don't think Geet is yet 20 weeks old in her pregnancy, let's take it as 3 months, that should make it 12 weeks old fetus. She is well within her rights to go for an abortion if she so chooses within the next 8 weeks to reach to the 20 weeks allowed as per Indian Law.

Clarification: Here I am presenting a hypothetical case scenario. Not that GEET would do it for the sake of MAAN, but that she can abort based on counseling keeping in mind that she is young, and also because of DEV's character delineation, which is that of a vain, characterless, immoral man whose child she may not want to have given further thought and consideration, who knows if the child inherits the genes of its father and not necessarily the genes of its mother or its uncle. - This is hypothesis I am speaking of.

Further additions

My question was, whatever be the rationale that drives her within the next 8 weeks or so, can we support her decision or choice.

In fact, do we think she has a choice even now.

Also, abortion is a pretty traumatic thing, it is not easy, it is not like getting rid of excess baggage. It makes a sea of difference and leaves indelible marks on the woman's psyche. So, it certainly will not be an easy choice or decision for Geet.

i think bringing a life into this world is solely a womans responsbility, they bear the pain, and all the hardships to bring this child in the world and to bring it up too...most women do it....so if women have such a huge responsibilty on their head they also must have a choice too...whether they want to be responsible for the child...in this case i m Pro Abortion...it is a woman's body and she should have full rights to do what pleases with it...nothing is less humanitarian then other people, government and society telling a woman what to do with her body...and her child...all the women should have full rights to terminate their pregnancy without harming themselves.

in Geets case...if she believes that sh cant bear this responsibility anymore then she should do whats best for her...the girl is only 18 yrs old...she doesnt know anything about life...has not seen anything beautiful in life...all her world has been that suffocating house and that small little confined life that she had in Hoshiyarpur.....after coming to Delhi she has started exploring her horizons..so if she feels that she cant handle a child right now..the choice hers...i wouldnt hate her for it at all.

I feel it is totally to the parents to decide wheather to keep the child or not
because a child is an amgel ..gods sent gift in any ones life...
definitly the baby should be taken good care of welcomed with all the love & affection..atleast by the mother...if she cannot take care of it..(wat ever be the reason...I feel she should reconsider her pregnancy)...olden days in asian countries..we had joint family concept & hence..even if the mother was not able to give in her 100%..every other person in family used to shed their love in some form or other...but now a days..it is parents...husband & wife...
believe me guys...it is tuff...every thing changes
- no personal time..at all..(my mom still tells me that...with me & my bro...she never got time to even comb her hair...& when ever she did we asked her are u going out...just imagine...she could even comb her hair....& we have so much to do...first of all chat here in IF😉)
- no time with hubby
-can't just walk out ..need plan ur day around the child
his/her food..sleep..change..
-list is endless
ok haveing a baby is devine..it is one of the best feeling in thw world...
i feel a woman feels complete after having a child..there is no further longing for anything..
child fills up all the voids in u....he/.she will give u so much of attention..u will never want more..
they blind faith a child has on her mother is fun..so go for it when u are ready to enjoy every moment..feeding...cleaning😳...sleeping endlessly with them...understanding their unsaid words bare with ur partners disapproval..& irritation..sometimes totally out of control...
but wat a child can make u feel...no one can ever...so child is part of u...who completes u...
so bring in the child with all the positive mind ...love..because they deserve to be loved by u...

Even if the woman chooses to go for an MTP for whatever reasons, it mostly leaves an emotional scar which stays for life. Maybe there are women who can weather it out but most women find it difficult to deal with it later. The sense of guilt will remain and can come to haunt at the most unexpected moments. After all she had carried a life within her, for however short a time. Choosing to end it does cause some emotional damage, the extent would depend on her principles about life.

Coming to Geet, the question would be why would Geet suddenly now choose the abortion route when she had even risked her life to save the baby's? Would it to be because she wants to start a new life with Maan? If so, then I would not support it. I'm sure Geet would not do it either. It would be totally uncharacteristic of her character. She had once said, "Bacchae ke badkar koi nahi hai". So dont see her doing it.

There remains a grey area where the woman may choose to end the pregnancy because of some foetal defect or because it was the product of rape. Now the right or wrong of that is difficult to be judgmental about.

interesting topic bri! 😊
i for one am all about what geet had fought for. in the first place which was the baby. I agree with opti, if she goes for the abortion route -which is not gonna happen- i'd never support her. since her character is about faith and confidence in what she believes in. I am sure that GEET wouldn't abort the baby, just for the sake of an easy life with maan. If she does, it's gonna kill her character. If she;s forced, then not.

Hi all commentators,

Thank you for your sensible and thoughtful views. I admire you guys for handling this debate with so much of understanding and commend your efforts.

However, I would like to add one clarification below and also updated in the post at the top.

Thank you,
Bri

bri, for me. iF she goes with abortion for the sake of being YOUNG and for the reason that DEV is the father of the baby, that'll just mess up Geet's character 😆 She fought with her family, went THIS close to death for the sake of the life inside of hers and all of a sudden it "CLICKED" that she's too young and the father of teh baby's a devil 😕 what was all that "LEAVING FAMILY" thing about?
