Journey to the truth

Geet came to her senses then, almost falling in her haste to get off him. She did not have any reply to that so she kept quiet. She did not want to qualify by agreeing or disagreeing for she did not know what was it that she really wanted. Well, she did but there was too much between them for her to want to make this any real. She knew she should not have been weak, weak of mind, weak of flesh. She needed to be strong, for her …for her…. She smothered her thought. Her reality was too painful to think about, to drag Maan in it.

She slowly got but on second try and walked back to the tent. Half way there, Maan came up, with her dupatta which was dripping wet, but he wringed and spread it to drape it about her. She always found it very chivalrous of him to do that. To always cover her with her dupatta whenever it was astray.

They reached the tent and he gave her privacy to change into dry clothes. He then called up Munshiji and organized a place for him, the circuit house. Once confirmed, he gathered everything and dismantled the tent after having changed into dry clothes himself.

They settled into the circuit house, the court hearing was at eleven and they got ready for it after some breakfast.

He had asked Geet why she had run once again and this time he got an answer that she had been told by Pinky that he would go to jail, if he did not appear in front of the court. His respect for her had increased even more and his love for her seemed to fill him up. He felt moved that there was someone who cared enough about him, his reputation to fight personal demons, even danger just to stand by his side. He knew he will do anything to keep this girl by his side. He made a promise to himself that he would always stand by her.

They went to the court via market place. Geet seemed confident today to have Maan by her side and there seemed no need to hide her face partially or cover her head up. She decided she will keep her chin up and face whatever adversity was there ahead of her squarely. There seemed some glances, some whispered behind their backs as they walked up the court steps. They learned that Ms Rathod was all noise and his appearance and paperwork prepared by the lawyers was sufficient to put the court at rest with the allegation. He was willing to pay up for the damages that a broken deal would cause Ms Rathod, however, Geet made him not pay and assure him that the very reason he had broken the deal now stood moot as she was back in Hoshiarpur and willing to take care of the project herself with his help.

With legal matters taken care of Maan decided to have a look at the land he had purchased apart from the one that had been Geet's. He had meant to ask her what was the situation and why she had disagreed about the land being on sale but they had not discussed that. Today he felt was the right moment.

"Why had you told me that the land was taken under false pretext from you and you had not wanted to sell it in the first place?" he asked her out of the blue. Geet just stared at him, wondering what to tell him and what not.

Just then she saw Gurvinder come towards her ask, "Aap yahan aur woh bhi inke saath?"

Geet was aghast to be face to face with even insignificant part of her past. Gurvinder was nothing more than a friend's husband but now he was asking about why she was back must mean things were not back to normal.

She asked quietly, "kyon kya hua? Mein Hoshiarpur nahin aa sakti?"

Maan then intervened, "Woh mere saath hai, Aap ko koi problem hai isse?" almost hostile to the man he had once thought was her boyfriend.

Gurvinder said, "nahin par Daarji aur Brij ke goonde aapko dekhenge to phir se peeche na par jaaye. Mein bhi abhi tak bhagta phir raha hoon, aur agar Rajjoji meri madad nahi karti to mein kab ka mar gaya hota."

"Rajjo" Geet almost choked on the word. Her sister, her little sister, how she has suppressed all thoughts of her family especially her sister and brother with whom she had had missed as they had no part in her family's betrayal. She felt her heartstrings tug with emotion, emotion to meet her sister.

She asked Gurvinder, "how is Rajjo?" then turned away as tears welled up in her eyes. Maan put a hand on her shoulder, giving her silent support. She composed herself and turned back to find Rajjo walking towards them, though she had not noticed them yet.

She pulled at Maan's sleeve, imploring him to move from there to go away, but he held her hand. He stood there and did not let her move, keeping her standing there, giving her a signal to face her family, her sister.

"Geet" Rajjo exclaimed in shock and then the expression turned to elation. She ran the last few steps and flung herself in Geet's arms.

"Where have you been, how are you, how are you feeling, everything alright with you? Did you see him? Did you see a doctor?" Rajjo just opened a barrage of questions and Geet was taken aback with the intensity and fervor with which Rajjo asked all the questions.

She tried to reply her calmly, but it was Maan who had reacted, he had a frown etched on his face with concern and incomprehension mingled together and he demanded looking at Geet with unblinking eyes, "Doctor? What is wrong with you?"
