Midnight Blues
She stood on the little balcony looking out on the courtyard that led to the main house. The lights were ablaze there and why not? He had returned from his trip after fifteen days. Naturally the first person he would want to see was Gran. Geet looked up at the moon and sighed. Lady Moon was all decked up in her silvery white gown throwing her beautiful beams down on earth.
Geet moved forward to stand in the moonlight. The sequins on her midnight blue suit twinkled giving an ethereal brightness and almost creating an aura around her. Her light brown eyes looked much like an innocent doe's. Her hand clutched at the end of her dupatta. Why was she wearing this beautiful outfit? Was it to please him? Was it to attract him? Or was it because she was plainly happy that he had returned? But what if he didn't come to visit her? After all, who was she? An inconsequential being……… Her eyes began to burn as tears threatened to flood them. She wanted to be a part of his life………. But her mind asked her if she had a right to think that way. She turned away and went to sit on the seat in the niche created by the pillars.
She hadn't touched the food on the table. She thought she's eat after he'd come to see her. Her runaway heart hoped he would share the food with her. She shook her head and wondered why her thoughts continued to torture her in this manner. The night was advancing and the lights in the main house dimmed. Yet there was no sign of his coming. She knew he must have gone to sleep, tired after the long journey. But she knew she was going to be restless for sleep would never come to rest in her eyes. So she waited and waited ……….
The lights had dimmed as he bade Gran goodnight. He thought he would tuck her in and be on his way …….. Oh? On his way to where, cried his cheeky inner voice. To Geet? What was she to him? Hadn't he had enough of women? His experience with the woman he thought he'd marry had made him retreat into his den. Had he forgotten that? Or did he think Geet was different? He clenched his teeth and walked up the stairs to his room. He was going to take a shower and hit the sack. He turned on the landing and walked along the shadowy corridor. His eyes however sought the outhouse. His steps almost came to a halt. He peered to see a dim light burning on the balcony. Was it a candle? What was going on?
Geet turned out the lights. She loosened her hair and tossed it free with the shake of her head. She trailed her hand along the wall as she began to move towards her room. The food was almost cold on the table. But she wasn't hungry anyway. At a distance, she thought she heard a creak. Was it the opening of the gate? Had he come to see her after all? She heard footsteps on the cobblestones in the courtyard. Were they really footsteps or was it the thudding of her heart? But there was no knock on the door. Was it a prowler? He probably knew she was alone in the house. Oh dear God!! What would she do now? She slowly made her way down hoping to find something to defend herself with.
The door was suddenly flung open. Her hand was raised to strike with the brass vase. She him in the doorway and the vase fell with a clunk on the floor and rolled away. She was frightened and that was obvious to him. Before he could say anything she put her hands on her slim waist.
"Oh! It's you……." she tried to sound nonchalant. She knew he didn't believe her for she saw his eyebrows lifting in mockery.
End of part I ……………..

Part II
He looked at the fallen vase that had rolled a few feet away from where he stood. After a long moment, he looked at her.
"You were about to attack me?"
"I thought it was an intruder, so ….," she ended lamely.
"This place is well guarded."
"Well, I wasn't sure. Anyway it's getting late, so goodnight." She replied tartly and started up the staircase.
"What's the hurry?" he asked. "Here is something for you."
"For me?"
"You sound surprised!" He put his hand in his pocket and drew out a small jewel box.
She gasped. "I couldn't….. I can't accept this."
"Why? I think you're being rude."
"Well I don't accept gifts from my boss."
"Oh dear! Your principles are really quite bizarre. Do they include hurting an old lady?"
"An old lady?" She squeaked in surprise.
"Grandma is your boss and she's given this to you."
"Grandma has given this?"
"Why! Isn't she your boss?"
Geet closed her eyes momentarily, embarrassed at her gaffe. She was thinking of him as usual.
"I ….I," she tried to find the correct words.
"Did you think the gift was from me?" He watched her with narrowed eyes.
"Of course not!" She began to back towards the stairway.
"Did you want me to give you a gift?"
"Of course not!"
"Maybe deep inside you were waiting for me?"
"Of course not!"
"Is there an echo in here?"
"Oh stop it. And stop suggesting things."
"You weren't waiting for me?"
"Of course not!"
"There you go again. Why are you in constant denial?
"I'm not…. Oh stop putting words in my mouth!"
He didn't know what attracted him to her. Perhaps it was her innocence, her naivet and her shyness. She wasn't coquettish and she was completely guileless. As she stood before him, her eyes pleaded with him. What was she asking for? Those limpid pools were sending all kinds of messages to him. He laughed inwardly. It was enough to make him feel confused. She wanted him but begged for understanding. She wanted him to stay with her but was too afraid to speak. She wanted him to come to her but shied away at the same time. What the hell was he supposed to do?
"That's a beautiful outfit." He tried to put her at ease. She looked down at her clothes. The golden threads on her dupatta shone in the flickering candlelight. He was standing a hair's breath away from her.
"Here's Grandma's present."
He snapped open the box. A pair of earrings lay on the bed of velvet. White diamonds clustered round the flashing sapphires. He looked at them and then at her. He pushed his hands forwards and offered the gift to her. She didn't want to take it.
"I can't, they are far too expensive."
"Geet!" He said with rawness in his voice. "Look at me."
"Let go of my wrist," he whispered into her ear. She loosened her grip and her fingers trailed down. He fixed the earrings and stepped back to observe them. They dangled from her ears. The fire and ice effect of the cold stones was breathtaking. They matched perfectly with her dress.
She was jolted back to the present by that question. "I …"
"Don't say anything," he put a finger on her lips.
He turned her and walked her to the mirror. "Take a look at the earrings."
Maan Singh Khurana at that moment made up his mind that come what may, this woman was going to stay with him for life.
