Journey to the Beginning
He was livid, when he realized she had gone, gone to Hoshiarpur. This fool of a girl will always do exactly what he was trying to protect her against. Did she ever listen to him? Will she ever do what he asked her, he wondered again and he already knew the answer? He knew this child woman was going to be the death of him yet. He will always run behind her, he laughed at himself. How love changed a man, he had now become a romantic fool, who did everything to protect that chit of a girl. His every move was towards her betterment, whether it was to stop the office staff belittling her or it was her antics like going to the place where he was protecting her against.
He felt humbled at this girl's actions. She had done this for him, to help him, but did she not realize that going back to Hoshiarpur would not only open up wounds that were yet to heal but also put her in danger?
He went to Hoshiarpur after confirming at the bus stand that she had left earlier. It had been a task trying to find which bus and the number, but then he was not Maan Singh Khurana, just like that. He knew how to get to bottom of everything. It was just whenever he was around her that his head stopped working and only hormones took over. He was mesmerized and stood before her like he was a love sick puppy who could only wag a tail and wait for her to pet him. He berated himself for not being in control of the situation when Geet was around him; his befuddled mind only saw her.
He reached Hoshiarpur at break neck speed and waited for the blessed bus to arrive. He saw her the minute she stepped down from the bus. She had covered her head and her face partly to not be recognized perhaps, but he would know her anywhere, he mused. There, he had again become totally captivated by her and was forgetting that he is supposed to be mad at her.
He pulled her to one side, near his car and hissed, "Why did you go come here without telling me? I told you I will take care of everything. Why do you defy everything I say? He then pulled her to the passenger side of the car, opened the door and pushed her in it.
"Stay there," he growled as she tried to move, and she stayed.
"First, Geet, I am so mad at you I could do something really bad, so don't say a word till we reach the hotel and second, don't be scared, I am not going to hit you." He had added as he has seen her cower in her seat. "I am not Brij." And he realized he should not have taken his name, there was a glazed look in her eyes." And I will kill him this time, if he comes near you Geet, I swear." He promised.
Geet had been wondering all the way to Hoshiarpur of how it would be to be back and had felt apprehensive as she had alighted the bus of being recognized. She had covered herself with her dupatta and had almost died when she had felt a hand pull her to the side but relief had washed over her to see Maan. Her Maan. He was always there when she needed him. She knew she had taken a step she might regret later but she had to do this for Maan. This was something she could do to repay all that he had done for her in a small way perhaps but it was an effort.
She looked at him, as he has spoken the harsh words for her brother and she had felt elation, exultation at being important enough for him to take a drastic step. She felt nothing for her brother, nothing where she should at least may be feel a little remorse for being so misguided that he had wanted to kill his own sister.
She replied softly, "He is not going to do anything to me, Maan. He is in Jail, since that day you had left back in Hoshiarpur. I had not called the Police, Gurvinder had. But yes I had confronted my family and today, I don't have anyone, anyone…just me and..my…" she stopped herself from continuing.
Maan had put a hand on her mouth as she had said that, "You have me, you will always have me, Geet!"
He then drove to the hotel. The very hotel, they had bumped into each other that night, the fateful night. She tried to push the thoughts away of that rainy night, the betrayal she had found out afterwards, much later.
Maan spoke with some emotion, "Hum yahan mile the na Geet. Uss toofani barish wali raat."
She mumbled an affirmation, remembering what she had told him that night. How ironic she thought, she had been such a nave fool to have mocked him with those words, that it was no wonder that he did not have anyone to love him and today, she loved him. With all her being, she loved him and she remembered that more clearly than what had transpired on that bed, that night. How things change, today, she remembered what they talked about that night rather than what should have been the most memorable night of her life, a night of her union with her husband.
They got out of the car and went into the hotel. The hotel it seems was full and there was no room. Looking disappointed Geet asked Maan what they were going to do.
He was a man who was always prepared and decided that the tent will have to do, even though he had not brought his jeep, the gear he had kept at last minute in the trunk of his car. He went straight to the lake. It seems like they were going to visit all the places they had bumped into each other. He pitched the tent as Geet looked at him making little of the task it must be to do this. She could hear the waves breaking on the shore gently and the rustling of leaves in faint breeze. He made two beds with sleeping bags at some distance from each other.
She was hesitant, but the way Maan behaved in a matter of fact manner gave her some confidence to sleep next to him. It was not that she did not trust him but it was her, what if she rolled over to him in her sleep? But she took the bed he had made for her and prepared to sleep fitfully.
She woke up with a smile on her face, stretching a little and sat up and joined her hands in silent prayer to her babaji like she did every morning. She then remembered where she was and opened her eyes. She was surprised she had slept so peacefully and felt rested and full of life. She looked next to her and saw Maan sleeping on his side with one arm tucked under his head and the other next to his chest, on the floor supporting him even in his sleep. She looked at him for few minutes taking in his form, he looked so peaceful, and she felt like running her hand in his hair to straighten the errant lock that had fallen on his forehead. Maan looked reposed even in his sleep, in control except for that lock hair. She smiled and then got up to see the sun rising at the horizon beyond the lake.
She walked up to the shore and dipped her feet in it thinking of the day Maan had saved her from drowning. She was standing there recollecting all that he had done and the number of times he had saved her. Today, she was going to save him, from public humiliation at the hands of a client. She was going to do everything possible to make sure that he was not dragged into court because of her.
As she stood there looking at the horizon deep in her thoughts, she did not realize, Maan had come and was standing next to her. He touched her shoulder and she came out of her reverie with a surprise. He was not wearing his shirt, just his jeans. She looked away slightly embarrassed for she wanted to go on looking at him.
"What are you thinking Geet, I have been here for last five minutes and you did not even notice." He almost complained.
She smiled, "Nothing. I was just thinking how many times you have saved me." Walking a little away from him into the water, for his bare torso was doing things to her insides that probably needed some calming down.
He brushed her words aside with a wave of his hand and said, "it was nothing. Something I would do for anyone." He explained even though he knew it was not the case, he had pushed her away the first time she had bumped into him when the goons had come behind her. He did not know why he had gone to save her from drowning, must have been the pleading in her voice he had heard. He smiled at how he had changed ever since he had met this girl.
Geet bent down to cup handful of water in her hand to wash her face and neck so that the cold water would dampen her heightened nerves. She felt heat welling up inside her with the image of Maan not leaving her even though she had her eyes fixed on the horizon. Suddenly she felt she needed to break the moment and cupped another handful of water and threw it towards Maan.
He jumped, when the cold water first hit him. He had been wondering about the sweet girl and she had the audacity to play with him, Maan Singh Khurana. He would show her. He recovered quickly and scooped up water himself and sprayed it on her, but she shrieked and went a few feet deeper into the water. He bent again and repeated but she was not trying to run away from him in almost ankle deep water spraying around her where she stepped.
He quickly caught up to her as she tried to run and picked her up and went purposefully deeper into water, threatening her to stop wriggling else he would drop her in water.
Geet was laughing and screeching at the same time telling him to put her down, but Maan was not having any of that. He went upto the point where he was waist deep in water and then asked her, "Tell me why you did that or I will drop you in the water."
She screamed, "No, nothing, put me down."
He then just let her go, straight into water. She screamed as she hit water, with flailing hands and feet as she felt herself bereft of his arms. She felt fear, fear of drowning; she did not know how to swim. She reached out for him caught his hand. She heard him say mockingly, laughter lacing his voice, "Geet, you can stand up, water is not deep," as he pulled her. She tried to balance but fell on him and they both fell backwards with a huge splash, his arms coming around her to hold her.
Both spluttered as they came up laughing, with her arms around his neck and his around her waist. She was sitting astride him, her dupatta floating a few feet away. He looked deep into her eyes, laughter vanishing and something else taking over, an emotion that was raw and pure just like the water surrounding them.
She stopped laughing when she saw the expression in his eyes. Eyes that captivated her, eyes that were smoldering with passion and her body hummed in answer to his question, question his eyes asked.
He leaned closer, closing the distance between them, capturing her lips with his and she responded with ardor, with answering passion to his. She kissed him like she could not have enough of him. Her hands went into his hair, tracing his scalp with fingers in need to have him closer, closer than they were, closer than their wet clothes allowed them. She clung to him, wrapping her legs around his waist.
He could feel her breasts against his bare chest, despite the clothes in between them, he could feel her like second skin and he reveled in the feeling of having her in his arms. He held her head as he kissed her, guiding her response, probing deeper into her mouth to extract sweetness that he wanted, he needed. She was driving him wild. But he held back as cold waves of water washed over them. He found some control still left in him, as he gently pushed her away from him and whispered, "I could get used to this, Geet, you sure you only want to be my fake fiancee and not a real one?"
