PART 11:

Angad went to Mishti's house next morning. "Hello aunty, aapka trip kaisa raha?"

"Bahut achha….I think we all needed that change….Jao Mishti tumhara intezaar kar rahi hai oopar…" Naina replied

Angad went upstairs to find Mishti surrounded by a lot of photographs. When she saw him coming, she got up and hugged him, "OH! I missed you so much….pata hai US main mujhe kitney log miley? Sab tumhein bhi jaante hain wahan…they were so friendly….hamaari shaadi mein bhi aayenge sab….I can't wait…." (these are all signs of Mishti's illness-she was having visual and auditory hallucinations which means she was seeing and hearing things which were not real).

Angad was bewildered at her chain of thoughts, "Mishti yeh kya keh rahi ho? Main tho aaj tak US bhi nahin gaya….aur naa hi mere koyi friends ya rishteydaar hai wahan…..tumhein koyi galat faimi huyi hai" he untangled her arms from his neck.

"Mishti…..I need to say something….main …."

"Arre Angad….dekho….yeh hai Disney ki photos…..this was my favorite place….hum apne bachchon ko bhi le jaayenge" she was not listening to Angad and continued to talk about the trip.

"MISHTI! LISTEN TO ME!" Angad finally shook her, "MERI BAAT SUNO….."

"Angad, I know you are stressed out because of the entrance exam but don't worry…dad will take care of you….yeh dekho….I got some designs for our wedding card……this should relax you……" she said.

Mishti was really testing his patience when he heard Dilip Bose's voice, "Hello, Angad! How are you beta? Padhai kaisi chal rahi hai….you know it is a tough competition this year….."

"Hello SIR! Bas theek chal rahi hai…wo main Mishti se baat karne aaya tha…."

"I am sure you missed her….wo bhi US mein sirf tumhari hi baat karthi thi…please carry on….I have an important meeting to go to…." Dilip turned around and left for his office.

Angad sat down on the floor at Mishti's feet and looked her in the eye, and firmly said "Mishti…main tumsey shaadi nahin kar sakta…."

She started laughing, "ANGAD!….you are so funny…..zaroor Kripa ney tumhein bhaikaaya hai…wo mujhe roz US bhi phone karti thi aur kehthi thi wo mujhe maar daley gi yadi main tumsey shaadi karoongi….don't worry….sab theek ho jaayega…." She got up and went to her closet to get something else. Angad put his head in his hands and thought, "yeh ladhki bilkul crazy hothi jaa rahi hai….." he got up in frustration and thought he would come back later or may be talk to Dilip and Naina instead.

"Ek minute thehro, Angad…..yeh dekho….maine US se 2 diamond rings khareedein hain….do you like them?….humari engagement rings…..lo chaaho tho abhi pahen lo…" Angad gave her a dirty look and left the room in a fury. He did not want to talk to anyone at this point….he was really angry!

DR DILIP BOSE'S OFFICE:

Dr Dilip Bose was anxiously waiting for this meeting, "Ya come in!" he said loudly as he heard a knock.

"Aapney mujhe bulaaya, Sir…." It was Kripa

"Aao, aao, Ms Sharma….baitho….kaisa chal raha hai yeh saal"

"Bahut achha sir…par kya baat hai?….aapney bulaaya"

"Haan…I need to talk to you about something very important. I have come to know through my resources in the Institute that you and Angad have become very close."

Kripa lowered her eyes as she was shy, "Jee, sir…we both like each other"

"Well…Kripa tum bahut samajhdaar aur intelligent ladhki ho….you know how ambitious Angad is…..I don't think he needs to be distracted at this stage….he has to face tough competition in the Neurosurgery entrance this year…aur uske baad 5 saal ka program….he has a long road ahead of him…."

"Sir…I understand…but believe me…he is the best candidate for this position….he is very focused in his goal…no one can deter him from that…"

"Kripa….Mishti is my only daughter….she is my little princess…..maine aaj tak uski har ichha poori ki hai…..she is also in love with Angad…I cannot see her heart break….you understand…"

"Sir…but Angad does not love her….." she said hesitatingly

"Yeh LOVE SHOVE SAB BEKAAR KI BATEIN HAI…..OUT OF SIGHT….OUT OF MIND……Jo saamney hoga, ussi se pyaar ho jaata hai eventually" he raised his voice as Kripa shuddered.

"Nahin sir…we really love each other…." She finally had the courage to say those words.

"Kripa….Angad's career as a Neurosurgeon is contingent upon one thing…..you will have to forget him or else….I will make sure he is not accepted in any program anywhere in the country…..you are not aware of how far my approach is….my daughter's happiness is most important to me…..UNDERSTAND….you are a good student…I will give you an excellent recommendation and you can transfer to any other college but you have no place at BMI from today……and if you try to contact Angad after today- remember if I can get him accepted, I can also get him rejected from the program….THIS IS THE BOSE MEDICAL INSTITUTE AND I AM DR DILIP BOSE!"

He got up and showed the door to Kripa. Kripa was stunned and was completely numb as she heard his words…..she walked out without thinking about what was happening…….she knew she loved Angad and he loved her…..nothing else mattered….but she also knew how important Angad's goals were for him…..maybe even more important than her…..she could not let him down…..she went to the hostel and packed her bags…….

PART 12:

My story is now going to take a 6-year leap but before I do that, I just want to give you a quick update on what happened after Kripa's sudden departure. As you can imagine, Angad went crazy looking for her….he even called all medical colleges in India but Kripa had told her college administration in Delhi to not reveal her identity to anyone as she knew Angad would try to look for her. Angad and everyone else at the BMI were made to believe that Kripa had been asked to leave the college as she had used some unethical ways- Dilip Bose had convinced everyone that Kripa had tried to sleep with various professors and attendings- to get good grades on exams! Ofcourse, Drs Karthik Pandey and some others seconded that statement when Angad wanted proof. Angad was devastated as expected. He put all his energy into getting accepted to the Neurosurgery program and decided to move on in life. As numb as he was emotionally, he agreed to marry Mishti soon after he was accepted into the coveted Neurosurgery program. Just before the wedding, Dilip Bose told him in confidence about Mishti's illness. Angad was shocked as all her behavior made sense to him now. He did not want to shy away from his commitment at that stage as he also felt a lot of obligation to both Naina and Dilip for helping him out of another crisis, this time being the separation from Kripa. He persuaded Harshini to tell him about Kripa's whereabouts but as she had promised Kripa, she just said she did not know anything.

If you are wondering about Angad and Mishti's relationship- well it was more a parent-child or doctor-patient kind of relationship rather than a true husband-wife relationship. Mishti would go in and out of her Schizophrenic relapses; all her medications had dampened her libido and she seemed happy in her own imaginary world where she was a mother of 2 kids and Angad and her were always traveling all over the world! She was still paranoid about Kripa and would often "see" Kripa chasing her or trying to kill her!

Angad had no desire to have a physical relationship with her either as he could never feel that way for any other woman after Kripa. He knew he still loved Kripa, even though she had betrayed him…..he often thought about what she would be doing….where would she be…..did she still remember him….???? Angad was committed to his residency and to Mishti's needs. He made sure she took all her medications, kept her doctor's appointments, took her out for walks and humored her as needed. He lived with the Bose's as it was just a convenient arrangement, with him being gone for hours or sometimes days when he was at work…..

Angad graduated with flying colors and was soon one of the most sought after Neurosurgeons in the city.

Unfortunately, Angad had forgotten to smile now….he was a very lonely man…..his existence was purely robotic at this stage in his life….his staff and residents called him "Dr McMachine" or "Dr McTerror". He expected everyone to perform to his high standards and would lose his temper easily……but was brilliant at his work!

SIX YEARS LATER

Angad, who was now an assistant professor in Neurosurgery, was making rounds with a senior resident and intern on the neurosurgical floor.

"Sir, ek naya admission hai….he is a 5-51/2 year old boy, Prateek Saxena from Delhi….newly diagnosed brain tumor in the cerebellum ( part of the brain important for movement and coordination)….his mother has brought him here for surgery….here are his MRI's sir…."the intern presented the case. Angad looked at the MRI films and agreed, "Hmm looks like the diagnosis is right…..but surgery could be a little tricky….see the tumor is very close to his visual cortex (part of brain required for seeing)……it could be hard to save his vision if one is not careful……hmm" Angad pondered with his hand resting on his chin….

"OK, let's see the boy now…." Angad walked towards room 408 which read: PRATEEK SAXENA

"Hello, Prateek…." He saw a sad looking boy lying on the bed with no expression as Angad greeted him. There was no one else in the room. Angad thought the boy was really cute-something about him was very attractive but he could not point his finger to what it was.

He sat down on a chair beside him and asked the residents, "Isske saath kaun hai yahan?"

"Sir, inki mother yahin thi kuch hi der pehle…she must have just stepped outside….in fact she is a doctor too…a Pediatrician….she told us that after Prateek's dad died in an accident few months ago, Prateek's behavior changed drastically. Initially she thought, he was just grieving but then he started having headaches and early morning vomiting, and became clumsy….she is the one who ordered an MRI…..sir"

"Well, it pays to have a doctor in the family!" Angad finished his exam and got up as he was not getting any response from Prateek.

"OK guys, please order another MRI….I would like one from our hospital….sometimes you never know what outside hospitals do…..sahi patient ka MRI bhi hai ya nahin….chalo….next patient" the team walked out.

As they were discussing their next patient in the hallway, Angad noticed a woman walking towards them- she looked elegant in a cream saree, beige shawl on one shoulder and shoulder length hair….why was he looking at her…he thought…..she looked so familiar…..till she was a few yards away….."OH MY GOD! She looks even more beautiful now…..why is she here?" he thought as he recognized her- she was talking on the phone and her eyes were staring at the floor. He saw her walk into room 408; his eyes following her just as they used to 6 years ago.

"Sir…..what happened?" the intern tried to get Angad's attention

Angad came out of a trance as he thought, "why is she going to Prateek's room?….why is she here?" as his initial tender thoughts about her changed into anger.

"Is that lady, Prateek's mother?" he asked

"Yes sir…would you like to meet her….she is a nice lady…." The intern started walking towards Prateek's room to call his mom. Before she could come out, Angad came and stood at the door, "Hello Dr Sharma….oh sorry, Dr Saxena?…..how are you?"

She looked up and saw the pair of eyes she was so familiar with….those eyes which were always full of love for her, were now reflecting pain… arrogance…and a lot of anger……

She composed herself and said, "I am fine….tum kaise ho Angad?" her voice cracked as she said his name. "Dr Mani nahin hain kya….?"

"I am sorry , Dr Mani is on vacation; if you want him on the case, you will have to wait 2-3 days but I am an assistant professor in neurosurgery, also very capable of handling your son's case" Angad said arrogantly.

"Iss duniya mein sirf do hi aise log hain jinhey main apne bete ki surgery karney doongi- Dr Mani ya ….ya….aap, Dr Angad Khanna…" she said trying to hold her tears.

Angad looked at Prateek and then at her, "OK, then we will repeat another MRI today….surgery tomorrow after pre op is cleared." He turned around and started to leave but then looked back and said, "I am glad you still trust me…..Kripa…." and walked away trying to hide the moisture in his eyes.
