Chapter 5- Beginning of a Beautiful… Something.
"Stop staring," Vidya said with her eyes closed. She laid in her beach chair in her red bikini for a little over an hour now, sunbathing.
"Who's staring? What is there to look at anyways?" Sagar said, he had sat next to her and contrary to his words he was indeed staring. What was wrong with this girl? He just did 10 laps in perfect timing and she didn't even open her eyes.
Vidya shook her hair out before responding, "Don't be mad just because I don't find you attractive. Not everything's about you, you know." She answered without opening her eyes again, ever since he had arrived, she hadn't opened her eyes once, and she didn't need her eyes to see she had hurt his ego. She smiled silently at her feat.
"Just like the fact everything is not about you. I wasn't staring at you." He stressed the word staring as if trying to mock her; but she didn't take to mocking so well. "I wanted to borrow your sunscreen, mine's not waterproof." He said lamely. Had he just been at loss of words? Ha, this was definitely a first.
"National Swimming Champ and no waterproof sunscreen. How smart? Can you spell melanoma?" She said.
"Yeah, well I took my girlfriend's sun block instead of mine. It's SPF isn't high enough. I was thinking of a way to say that with a girl like you understanding…you know you're not the easiest person to ask a…"
"Favor from?" She completed knowingly. It wasn't entirely true. She was one of the most approachable people in the world but her dislike for Sagar always kicked in at the nick of time.
"Yeah. Anyways, my girlfriend's here so I'll just ask her." He said coolly as if not caring that she had totally insulted him. He watched the sky. Vidya felt his eyes somewhere else besides her.
"The sun's going down…" He said awe-struck. What was the big deal? It goes down every day and comes back up the next.
"Yeah." Vidya said, not exactly knowing what to say.
"Isn't it weird how people watch the sunset?"
"No. It's beautiful and romantic. Why would it be weird?" She asked confused.
"I mean it means the day is over, your time's up. It shows darkness falling. It's not really beautiful when you think about it…" His voice trailed off.
"I guess. So you think sunrise is prettier?" She asked, genuinely interested.
"No. I mean, it's identical to sunset. Why is it like that?" He asked, tilting his head to the side.
"God wants the end and the beginning to look the same." She said captivated.
"Aren't they the same though? Nothing new can happen till something old ends. Like the world. How weird would it be if we lived forever?"
"Would no one die?" She asked hopefully.
"Yes, but no one would be born either."
"Death is a part of life?" She asks. He clicks his tongue.
"Nope. Life is a part of death. And death is a part of another's life. It's a circle." He said tracing a ring in the sand.
"Never-ending." She gasped, tracing the circle. Her fingers touched his for a moment. "So what happens to us after we die?"
"Rebirthing as another person. It's sort of God's way of giving second chances. Making things right." He said now drawing an infinite symbol in the sand.
"So if everything's right. We go to heaven or hell."
"There is no heaven, no hell. It's this entire world, all about making things right here. Heaven is supposedly another world that's perfect. No greed, no lust, no envy. And hell is a place chock full of it. People seek salvation after doing a world of terrible deeds here, what good does that do?"
"This place is it. If you put lust, greed, envy here it's Hell. And if you don't, you keep peace. It's heaven."
"Exactly!" He said passion firing in his eyes. "Peace that's what it's all about."
"Well it's hard to keep peace around here, in today's day in age."
"The problem is simple."
"What?"
"We judge. We don't trust people or ourselves to be the people we could be."
"Yeah. I guess that basically sums it up."
"You agree?" He asked, she nodded.
"Hey Sagar." She said, a bit afraid of him at this point.
"Yeah."
"We're complete hypocrites." She sighs disappointed.
"I know." He sighs.
"We're making our lives hell. We judged each other. You're a good person, I think. I was wrong to insult you…repeatedly. For no reason."
"Same here."
"Truce?"
"Truce." They shook hands.
