Chapter 2- Stalker
"What's cracking, chicas?" Niharika asked, taking Vidya's Pepsi. Vidya stuck her tongue out at her as she took a gulp.
"Oh nothing, Mahi's got a stalker." Vidya proclaimed calmly.
"Oooh, who is it?" Suhani pulled up a chair beside Mahi.
"Some boy named Shabd." She sighed sadly.
"New kid. At least he's cute…" Suhani rubbed Mahi's shoulder sympathetically.
"No Hans, you don't get it. I don't know him and…its creepy. He's so…chipku." She shuddered. "Hi Mahi." A deep, obviously male voice calls from behind her. A man came and sat on Mahi's left as the right had already been occupied by Suhani.
"What's up?" He smiled, he could be a model. Mahi would have otherwise been smitten had he not been following her like some stalker.
"Is there a reason you're following me?" Mahi sighed, Shabd smiled at her obvious annoyance.
"I'm not following you; I just have all the same classes as you. So I thought I'd get familiar with this beautiful, friendly, and familiar face." Mahi had just been complimented, and Shabd had just very craftily avoided her question. A diplomat, could she get any more attracted? Her cheeks flushed despite herself.
He brushed his hand over hers, "So see you in class?" He walked away and Mahi defenselessly dropped her head to the table. Vidya stroked her hair. Suhani commented without thinking, "You were blushing." Mahi looked indignant, "I don't blush." It was of no use, Suhani quickly moved on.
"So who's doing what for break?" She asked with a smile.
"Football!" Niharika barked, she was the boyish beauty…and an aggressive soccer player. Anyone could tell by her build; she was tall and had toned legs. Her hair was forever pulled into a messy bun or a sporty pony tail, just to accommodate her physical work. She had the illusion of being pretty; but she was no more than average compared to Suhani. Niharika was pretty; with her layered brown made to frame the contours of her round face, her brown eyes stood out dramatically against her fair skin, she was pretty but Suhani? Suhani was beautiful. She never tried to be, it was her naturally jet black hair which was naturally wavy and shiny and even had natural copper highlights. She was nature's piece of work; thin lips, nice nose, high cheeks…it was almost sickening how much beauty she possessed. She was looked to next to share her summer plans, she blurted. "Art workshop in Spain?" The moment of silence occurred, the moment in which disbelief adorns every face but her own. She nodded to confirm the reality of the statement. They exchanged hugs and excited teenage girl screams before calming themselves again.
"Okay so we got a football camp in Goa and we got an art workshop in Spain. So that leaves us two left here to rot our brains here in the blistering Benarasi heat." Vidya distressed dramatically, the four laughed. Her face turned to a smile instantly, "Well Mahi babe, forget you cuz I'm gonna swim all summer." Mahi frowned, she didn't swim. She refused to wear a swimsuit. She was stuck in black all summer all alone with a possible stalker; this summer was sure going to go great.
Vidya cleared her throat nervously, "So anyways…this afternoon there's a pooja at my house." Vidya started nearly holding her breath. "You're coming, right?" She looked for a positive response.
"Aw man, another pooja? Girl, you know I'm running out of salwar kameezes to wear!" Suhani complained, but of course she was lying. She had a ton of salwar kameezes, but who liked wearing those anyways? Vidya gave them a puppy dog face and reluctantly they nodded.
Later, the three showed up at Vidya's house. They unhappily sported their Indian outfits; Mahi wore a black-red salwar kameez, Niharika wore a pink tight salwar with a matching pink kameez and dupatta, Suhani wore a turquoise kurti and white skirt.
"I'm so glad you guys came. I would've died here." Vidya said in a grateful whisper. Suhani interrupted quickly, "Just saving another damsel in distress." She smiled briefly before her smiled dropped, she glanced to Mahi. Why?
"Hey Mahi," The unmistakable voice called, Mahi flinched, without turning she replied. "Hey Shabd. What are you doing here?" He walked around to face her.
"My parents dragged me here. What are you doing here?" I live here dumb ass. Actually I don't technically, but EVERYONE knows I do.
"Here for the pooja." She stated simply.
"Oh well, it's gonna start soon. I'll catch you later." Niharika noticed Mahi shiver when Shabd touched her shoulder when leaving. Mahi didn't like to be touched, but surprisingly, she didn't shake him off either. Mahi noticed Vidya watching her face closely. "Stop it!" She yelled, covering her face. "What?" Vidya asked innocently.
"No psychological analysis, I don't even know him, okay?!" Mahi untangled the hair from her earring.
"Did I say something about him? Who is this him you speak of?" Vidya asked innocently again, her voice was teasing and her eyes agleam. Mahi rolled her eyes and stomped off. Suhani laughed, "So what does our shrink say?" She let the guilt of her choice of words sink in, luckily Niharika hadn't heard. Vidya sat and stated expertly, "Mahi knows this guy from somewhere, but amazingly enough even our Mahi, the girl with the elephant memory cannot remember him. That scares the daylights out of her. And might I add, she is COMPLETELY flattered and impressed but is too damn weird to become friends with this guy."
Through the veneration, all four of them had the same flashing thoughts rushing through them; Shabd and Mahi, about Suhani leaving, about what craziness Niharika would commit over the summer, and what Vidya would really do over the summer…she can't swim all the time, can she? They'd spend summers apart but this was different. This summer was so pregnant with anticipation and excitement. Why? Impulsive presumption, perhaps. That's what it was.
