“I get it” Sameena nodded

“Its not like I am running away from my own being… I am not ashamed of my eyes or anything… my eyes gave me the most important thing I have”

“Hes not a thing… but OK” sameena tried to kid

“I know… I know…. Jaidrith is my most precious thing” she teared up.

Sameena nodded comfortingly

“I appreciate having you in my life Sameena”

“Thanks I do too Mrunal.. I mean… Ms”

“Oh I told u I am Mrunal”

“I cannot snatch love from my mother right?” “She used to tell me when I was young that if I looked like her she would love me more” Mrunalini teared up

“Many mothers don’t know when to shut up” Sameena was furious

“I know… I know… I always thought she hates me more than any mother would hate their daughters”

“You are not responsible for your Dad’s actions”

“She knows that” Mrunal was matter of fact

“Lekin aapko galat treat kiya unhoney”

“See I have every reason to be upset with Jaidrith, not every reason but I could, because I found myself pregnant from a one night stand”

“Aapne unko contact karne ki koshish nahi ki?”

“I don’t even know where he lives or… I didn’t”

“So you… know? NOW?” sameena was shocked

“Umm.. may be… I don’t know where he lives” she quickly covered her tracks

“Oh” Sameena was confused

“I might know what he looks like” she nodded trying to be cryptic

“Hmm” Sameena nodded

Mrunal paced the room nervously

She never sat in the “therapist’s couch”

“Can you keep a secret?” she whispered

Sameena nodded albeit a little fearfully

Mrunal scrolled through her phone distractedly

“that’s him” she said sitting down by Sameena

Sameena read up about him, and scrolled through his pictures

“He is SO handsome” she looked at Mrunal in shock

“Does Jaidrith look like him?” Mrunal asked fearfully

“Sameena did not notice that

“OMG!! YESSS… I am pretty sure except for the blue eyes this guy looked like Jaidrith when he was little

“Oh really?” Mrunal grabbed the phone and paced again

This made her bawl, but she held it back

“Sh--!

“oh how can I protect him”

“U don’t have to worry Mrunal it was consensual and he didn’t care and you didn’t care, neither of you talked about this so why bother” Sameena was cautious

“Are you sure? U think so?” Mrunal liked that answer

Sameena nodded tentatively

“Yeah there was no agreement, no pact, nothing… zilch nada… zero” Mrunal signaled a zero with her hand

She was energized by the answer she got from her therapist

“Does he know?” Sameena asked softly

“No he doesn’t… I mean he I mean he doesn’t” she ended that line

“Oh”

“I cant give him my BABY” Mrunal was terrified she sat back on the couch and wept with her face in her palms

Sameena panicked, she didn’t know how to advise her

Mrunal rarely cried

But something must have triggered her Sameena wondered if she had received some legal notice

“Did u get something over email?”

“Whatt?” (sniffling) “Oh no… no… no he doesn’t even know where I live”

“Then why are you crying?” Sameena was confused

Zahra peeked holding two mugs of chai

“Zainab wants pizza, what will Jai have?”

“Oooh… he cant have regular flour… not until his patch test”

She wiped off tears

Zahra entered slowly “Kya hua?”

“Umm.. nothing…. Just obsessed with my kid” she giggled

“Oh good… we don’t want you hating him or anything”

She gave Mrunal a hug as Mrunal got up to accept her chai mug

Zahra and Sameena exchanged a look

Sameena was very professional she never shared anything with her mother

Today she was really worried why Mrunal was so cagey

“I am taking the day off tomorrow, so Sai and I can go hang out” Mrunal explained to Sameena as her mother shut the door back again

“Oh nice… Sai ko kaha aapne?”

“About?”

“Um… u know…”

“No not about anything…”

“Do u talk to ur Baba or Aai?”

“Nope…” Mrunal’s expression tightened

Someone she knew had texted her a picture of Falguni holding her half sister “World’s most beautiful baby”.

Mrunal sadly STILL wanted that…. At the ripe old age of 33 she wanted that

They drove home and stopped by for mango sorbet, Jai was talkative and chirpy after hanging out with Zainab

He was mischievous and curious about mechanical things, he always managed to “fix” (read break) things that did (not) need fixing around the house

He was naughty and left a trail of destruction when he was little

People turned to glance at them twice when they saw them in public

The tall slender almost 10 year old, drew as much attention as she did
