“I can pick them up at 5 ish, will that be OK?” Lyn was at mrs Gomes she needed her help urgently Saturday for back up day care
Lynn was emptying a large sauce pot into a steel container
“I can send bread over Mendy banayega aaj raat ku” she promised Mrs Gomes
Mrs Gomes cat purred and walked between the women and rubbed her tail on Mrs Gomes and left the kitchen
“U take such good care of me darlin”
“Well u said I am your niece, I make 5? 7 things… I can make them over and over again” Lynn giggled
She turned to rinse the chicken
She had made fried fish, some soup, and cooked some rice with the leftover fish and veggies
“Chicken in coconut is my favorite”
“Its from Mangalore, my Mum makes it I told u”
“Mendy is a great cook u don’t need to cook”

The women laughed
Mrs Gomes didn’t have any kids
Her sister in Panaji did but both kids lived overseas
The sisters were going to be for each other. She had to have knee surgery, and her sister was visiting her daughter in Singapore so she couldn’t be here.

“Do it after you eat the food, Mendy says the chicken tastes different each time” Lynn laughed

She spent the next couple weeks sneaking in mand out of work and taking bank loan officer’s calls in the stairwell outside her bullpen.

Canyon Oaks was less 7 kms from Chembur, though her office was going to be a bit far

She met Sai for lunch one afternoon, she was allowed a certain number of “free” or discounted coupons to dine at the restaurants

They ate at a Chinese restaurant and giggled over the silliest of things

Mrunal rarely spoke Hindi the first 22 years of her life living in the gilded (c ) age, only English, only overseas vacations, no buses no locals
But her life of last 9 years had brought her in close touch with the real Mumbaikars, Sai was the first…

“We both are thinking he will want the child… which man wants his affair baby” Mrunal laughed
She was going to do everything to protect Jaidrith

“Both cute hai who haan? Us din jab tu chhodi usko, he says “Maushi, Aai ka boyfriend rehta na to mujhe tang nakko karti”
Mrunal burst out laughing “That little crab”

“Hey I am going to ask Mrs Gomes if she will accept less money”

And so Mrunal DID, over an hour and a half one evening
After explaining everything about who she begged and how she came up with 60ish lakhs
Mrs Gomes, told her taking a Rs.5 lakh hit was not doable
Mrunal went through her carved wooden jewelry chest in her cupboard
It was one of the things she had received from her friends for her 18th birthday, it was studded with real pearls
She didn’t have much inside, except for a gold chain and a pair of gold anklets she had bought Jai when he was a baby, and her own sparse jewelry
She took Jaidrith’s chain and a pair of her own bangles to a trade in place and cashed it and called Mrs Gomes again, asking her if she will be willing to take Rs.2.2 lakhs instead of 5
“Sure darlin” Mrs Gomes said with a resigned sigh
Mrunal sat in the stairwell at work and wept
