Yearn
“No hanky panky business Dadi has stacked Ramayan sky high in my room” Viveka whispered as Dadi the twins followed close
“Arent we supposed to be having se- because the religion mandates it” he laughed grabbing her hand
He was insufferable
“Why are you staying over?” she asked dodging the pointy rocks on the walking path as she turned to look at Dadi to make sure she was being helped
“Ur Dad asked I agreed”
“I think that’s great” she smiled
“You tried ur best to make me change my mind and return didn’t you?” he laughed
“Umm.. My grandparents are practically living with us, if I was to separate from you and return to my parents I would probably get the divan in the living room”
“The day bed?”
“Hmm”
“Waha koi nahi so raha ab”
“Did you want to separate?” he opened the door for her and looked into her eyes
“Aisa nahi hai” she was cautious
He looked at her without saying anything
“We don’t get along right… maybe it could happen, two strong people great s—but cant stand each other most days”
He just looked at her didn’t say a word
She bit her lower lip sitting down, shaking her head
“Zyada ho gaya shaayad… Ufffff” she scowled
Left her bag and got out and sprinted to Dadi and helped her
Dadi chose front passenger seat
The twins and her sat in the back they were giddy with joy, they had a ton of things lined up to do with him
It was an unconventional meeting, falling in love and marriage
Nothing like Harshu Varsha
No ceremonies no pomp no rituals
Viveka realized her sisters yearned for a traditional Jeeju saali relationship
They probably had a reputation to uphold on SM and among friends
“You should bring him to college and show him off tomorrow” Viveka urged
He didn’t smile
Dadi snoozed or told him how to drive
She asked him about controls, and told her how Dadu, would let her play whatever she liked on the “tape recorder” on their 1989 Maruti
She suddenly woke up from loud snoring
And ordered Raanav to have a baby and told him she doesn’t plan to leave until she is made Dadi
Karuna slept with her head on Viveka’s shoulder too much flirting with Mayank
Diya countered Dadi “Dadi aap CAR se nahi utrogey? “Jab tak Veev Didi pregnant nahi ho jaati?”
Viveka rolled in the back seat
“Haan to theek hai YAHI rehte hain hum, hame kauna kahin jaana hai BATAO” she challenged Raanav
Raanav winked at Diya thru the rear view mirror
He had a piercing look for Viveka
Dadi was settled in the twins’ room
Karuna went to sleep on the divan
Naina was not home yet from work
Viveka went to her mess of a room
“Suno” she called like her Ma did
He was in the balcony on the phone with Rakshit first and then friends
He turned around and but didn’t act like he cared
“Suno” she called
“Call u back” he growled and hung up
“I can give u a teeshirt”
“I am fine” he shrugged
“Hmm”
She began to tidy the mountains of folded laundry and other knick knacks left on the bed
Pulled out sheets and spread them out, he helped without sayinga word
“Whats with all the bangles”
It irritated him
“dadi did something for Varsha” she said distractedly
“U wore the entire quantity?”
“I am SUPPOSED to wear a dozen every day
“says who?”
“UP SE HOON main”
“So?”
“I am sorry I was tactless over there in the car” she sat down exhausted
Diya was puttering around in the living room, there was no privacy for the Parashar couple to fight or argue
“That’s fine” he said quietly
“Tumhe achhi nahi lagi to I can take them off as you know I am not big on any marital symbols” it hurt her as she said it
True, she wasn’t big but today when Varsha was being celebrated and beautified Viveka had felt a brief flash of craving, just like her sisters did with Raanav
She did too with her own marriage
A rushed ceremony and no reception and diving headlong into real life didn’t give her the feel for anything
“I thought you probably would want a big ceremony lavish event with the bells and whistles, if things didn’t work out between us you can get that” she expressed her fear
“Ur unrequited desire was used to lash out at me?” he leaned on the wall
“How did you know?”
“I mean you went to a ceremony right, there is one at your aunt’s every week I am guessing” he laughed
She smiled grudgingly
“Aur hamey… MUJHE I mean ek bhi nahi mili” she was almost in tears, "except for the Lohri night and the other night when Naina got her job... both of which were not intended for US"
He was stunned to see her so vulnerable
