@Janas and @Tiny. I am not, for one moment, analysing Rani Padmini's action, i.e Johar. It might have been the best choice for them then. My only point is, that , to showcase it in this time and age may provoke unnecessary repurcussions. We already have many soaps on television which glorify a certain kind of mindset about ideal bahus and betis. Such ideas will take us back in time .Filmmakers should let history to the historians. History is best portrayed in the form of a documentary rather than a feature film. As u rightly said @Janas, all this film has achieved is GOOD MONEY, PUBLICITY to Sanjay leele bansali and some very bad PUBLICITY to Indian democracy.

Cute thanks for pointing out that dialogue. My issue is with that dialogue which equates jauhar to the power of rajput bangles.not jauhar was committed as I know throughout history women have committed suicide in one form or another than become sex slave.and it continues becauBrse even now we r not making ladies learn martial art, fighting techniques both physical and emotional thinking someone will protect them. It is a harsh reality a woman has to know she has to fight her battle. She has to be equipped from childhood for that. When u equate valor in a movie to jauhar again the generation grow up thinking that's the right thing to do.it's not. Atleast now. I have read lot of Indian history. There are many awe inspiring stories of valor of both men and woman in it which should see the light of the day in shows and movies. That should inspire the generation to fight it out. bring positive change. I am a fan of Indian history and mytho. My biggest dream is to write a love story around partition hopefully another love story around Bhopal gas tragedy, then many other topics which interest me. At present I am editing seven vows for publishing. That story is also based in Rajasthan set in 90s deals with couple of social issues most prominent being female feticide. Now someone asked are woman safe now. My question is what are we doing to make it safe.someone brought us till here.what are we doing to better things. Both history and mytho offers u learning to do something even a small step for something better. Question is r we taking those learning.

Shruthi, we r in this forum and there r other fora where people like us discuss. But my question is about the very common people. How will we impart knowledge. For them first is "Roti, Kapada and Makaan". We r all like that. Once we achieve that, only after that we think about all these. So how r we going to explain all these. Education in the correct sense has to be free. Some NGOs promote it, but I've personally seen because of funds they tend to distort facts. I'll not elaborate. It will cause problems. So I don't volunteer with them. Result who is the beneficiary? Who is the loser? We don't know. But what I do is from experience, I try not give unsolicited advice; but help them. Not lead a life of begging. But in whatever possible way, I try. And I do only for people who I know.
As u said, anytime I'll watch a Padman than a money making man's Padmavati. As Usha said, it will have a bad effect showing Jouhar in this era.
But today's youngsters hardly know our history. It is always black and white. Never grey. So either they become fanatics or extremely so called secular. This is what is happening. Unfortunately, many true historical facts have been destroyed and we can do nothing. So whatever distorted history the Britishers have left us with is being taught in schools. Results some youngsters think to be secular means doing anything. And some others think we have to protect, so we can pelt stones and harass young girls play acting. We r asked to dress like this or that; not to go out. Or in the other case, we will do whatever we want; we do not care; we will drink use drugs, and the list goes on. Earlier, I used think we can debate and stop. Now I have understood, it is a self learning process. Nobody can advise anybody else. It has to come from within. And only then we can be at peace with ourselves and our surroundings.
BTW, there is this fantastic song by KK : Aa chal main tujhe lekhen chaloon ek aisi gagan ke tale, Jahaan gam bhi na ho; aansoon bhi na ho, Bus pyar hi pyar pale".

Thanks @Janas for reminding about that song. I am optimistic, like the poet who penned those lines. We will reach there one day.

I watched Padmaavat for its artistic excellence. I was not taking any message from it.
Its a very beautiful movie crafted very well by Bhansali.

I will get what is right and what is wrong by going through day to day incidents than looking back to history.

I try to read different political views so that I can filter them and get some perspective.

Message movies dont interest me. They look forced. Even village people prefer a grand movie to a message movie because at the end of it we need to escape from the harsh realities of the world for a few hours. Thats why people flock to empty films like Golmal Returns or TZH than a Newton. Only intellectuals patronise films like Newton. Message movies may work with a big star and it is due to star than the message people watch them.

I will separate a Bhansali who is like an exotic painter from a David Dhawan.

Anita thank you for the link Who do you think...I watched the entire episode and had my eyes welling up at times. Like she speaks of the turning point i had a few which made me take a stand point. One is a BBC documentary on Sex Determination and selective abortions Titled Let Her Die and another a first hand account of female infanticide.
I used the documentary to trigger a discussion on the atrocities on women...i saw one of the girls in the corner of the room sobbing and probing further realised that they were 4 sisters and their mom was expecting her 5th child. I realised how traumatic it must be for the girl to hear the discussions and delibrations at home. The 5th turned out to be a boy thank god for that.

I had read of JJ introducing the cradle baby scheme and it becoming quite successful. on one of my visits to train teachers in a school near Usliampatti one 3 year old had come saying how there was a paapa in his house. the animated way he described i went looking for him and found he was missing for two days. on the third i saw him and asked paapa enna panudhu Whats the baby doing?
He said Paapa sethu pochu...The baby is dead i asked the teacher how and the little fellow said Appatha Vandhudilla adhaan paapa sethu pochu...My grandmom came nah so the baby died...i dont know what connection the child had made but he left me speechless and i took a while to discover. I read the gruesome way the mysterious deaths are connected to the arrival of the grandmoms.
When i enquired why couldnt they abandon the baby in the cradle rather than kill a nurse from the hospital said apparaently the brutal killing would happen in front of the mother's eyes to cure her of producing girls...this in recent years...
Women who walk out or find other options seem respectable than these that murder and abet murder.
i havent been able to sleep after reading about the 8 month old baby battling for life after being raped by her 28 year old cousin...
I feel rather than fight over a period that is history we should be fighting to create safe places for our week and helpless...i consciously avoided girls as i have counselled little boys and young teen boys that have been sexually assaulted and have not had the courage or means to cope with the mess.

@leavesandweaves yes that is what I told if it comes in TV I will watch it for songs and grandeur. I agree to you on SLB. He takes doomed stories on artisitc canvas. Exception maybe Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam and this was the movie I watched also because of Ajay Devgn's subtle performance as Vanraj in second half.
I had watched Devdas and almost slept off , then coming and asking my mom what did you find in this story to cry. A woman was married to another man because the hero couldnt stand up to her when it mattered most and then drank and died. Bajirao Mastani was better and I enjoyed the songs also.

@Janas it is not just about debating. Your writing influences at one level, your actions influence at another level. As an active member of CSR wing of my org dealing with educational activities for underprivileged I have come across extra ordinary stories of girls and boys who fought the odds to find way. I use lot of means which includes books, movies to mentor students. Lagaan is a movie I use quite often as a motivation tool 😃. I also dont give unsoliticited advice. But then queries come to me as you can say over the years I have developed a trust factor among people where people believe she wont do something bad for our child. I have success stories of my mentees but it is not just about me giving direction, it is about them trusting me and taking action in that direction. Over the years I have been able to differentiate between fatalistic, practical and futuristic students. It is a pleasure to mentor futuristic students as they have goal and vision they only needs the means, you can guide practical students also but it needs some time. Fatalistic characters zap the energy out of you. They have already decided what is possible and wont even give a chance for alternate approach which can give them something better. I leave fataslisic characters to their fate, you cant do anything with them. They crib and cry.

@vidya exactly mothers who walk out to protect their babies are respectable than one who stands and sees it telling oh this is the fate of the baby girl. Jauhar was the practice of 13th century, self immolation, what is inspiring about it. If you died fighting martyr, if you died protecting saviour. Both inspire. Where does Padmavati belong martyr or saviour to inspire. Rani Lakshmi Bhai was a fighter and Neerja Bhanot a saviour.

Shruthi exactly the reason i could not enjoy Rang de Basanthi...the conclusion left me feeling defeated...
Sunitha Krishnan and the likes of her who stand up...speak up and take on the patriarchal society that is quick to condemn and suppress dissent and a proactive handling of issue are real life heroes.
