Blacks and Greys
This was the wedding of the year in Roorkee. Even the local Dainik Hindustan had talked about it on a Page 3 blurb three days in a row for some reason or another. The weddding guests wore designer outfits and got off fleets of Mercs and Porsches.
The bride was ensconced in a 3rd floor room at the farm house trying on underskirts for her lehenga
"Hum kitni baar kahe inko, saree pehan na seekh lengi Himani was not happy
"MAAA... hum abhi yeh try kar rahe hain, please don't stress me out. I feel fat already Avantika moaned
"Quit the drama. Ma sahi keh rahin hai, kal raat ko Alka Bhabhi ka phone aaya Bani Bhabhi ko she said "Hope she knows how to wear a saree, we find reasons to wear a saree almost every day
"Humse yeh umeed nahi karenge, hum Dilli reh chuke hain Avantika said dismissively
"DILLI reh chuki hain na, Dusseldorf to nahi? Himani scoffed
"Ma aajkal koi nahi pehanta sariyan Avantika paused knotting up the skirt and chose to rant to her Mom
"Yeh arranged marriage hai Teeku, aapko Dad ne kaha koi hai to batayen, aapne kaha nahi, humne baat yaha tay kar dee Himani reviewed how it went by repeating it
"Ma, Chandan hai waha, hum CHANDAN ke liye kar rahe hain shaadi cornered, Avantika lashed out
"Dheere TEEKU meeta hissed shocked
The salon girls and the make up help and the random cousins were a few feet away
Avantika teared up
"I have to get married. I cannot live without Chandu. You all did your horoscope thing so I agreed she spoke between whimper
"achha pleez betu ro nahi Himani hugged her daughter
"Ma yeh wahan jaakar sabko yeh kahengi ki Chandan ki wajah se Harit se kar rahi hain shaadi to kya sochenge? Meeta was astounded
"waise HE is also not marrying me because it was love at first sight or we were good in bed Avantika hissed back breathlessly
"Stop it... Just stop it Himani ordered
"Ma its an arranged marriage Teeku argued
"It IS but the total lack of involvement and enthusiasm was bothering me until last night, right now its terrifying me Himani choked up her eyes big and fearful
Teeku lowered her gaze, unable to meet her mother's eyes
"Teeku... aap baat sunen Meeta whispered in a conciliatory tone
She pulled the young girl toward her
"Just because Hemant was a lawyer and you had no topic to connect with him on. And he was the quiet type, doesn't mean Harit will be that way
"No Bhabhi... hum itne bewakoof hain kya? Humne dekha na unko, ek mahiney mein black pant, black tee, he has nothing to say. Except at the court room Avantika hissed
Himani's face was pale
"To aapne karne ki koshish ki baat?
"About what Ma... music... TV shows? "He just looks boring Avantika said sadly
"So? Meeta held her breath
"Ive just made peace with it. I will marry him. But I wont worry what he likes or not likes... at some point his wardrobe of just blacks and greys will quit affecting me "He walked over to the kid's school and drove off with my... umm.. Chandan "Only people that are completely insensitive do thatshe said flatly
Himani was itching to give her a sound lecture about what such fatalistic thought will do to a marriage, and how she is using her resentment of Harit's actions to be so stoic about her impending marriage
Himani always feared Teeku's unusual obsession and love for the child will result in heartbreak of some sort
But had never in her wildest dreams thought the heartbreak would come in the form of a cynical attitude towards her own marriage
