Part 7

It had been exactly a month since Angad had met Prateek. Ever since then, Angad would secretly go and meet Prateek daily. It became a habit for him. He felt an attraction towards him, while Prateek had been enjoying the company of a father figure because he had never been influenced by one.

They were becoming real attached, and Kripa had no idea about it. She never interfered in Angad's life, and even though she was always curious about where he would go, she would never ask. According to her, it was none of her business, and she had no right to ask. She had other things to think about. From what her doctor had told her, she had about 4 more months to live. As the days had gotten closer, they had felt longer. Now, since she knew death was near, she just wanted it to come soon and end. She would also visit Prateek, but unlike Angad, she would do it once a week.

It was one of these regular days, Angad was on his way to visit Prateek when something had dragged him to a bookstore on the way. He parked his car, and walked in, recognizing the place a bit. He had been here before with Kripa, she was crazy about books, a book nook since birth. He smiled as he automatically walked to the mysteries section. He moved his hands over the book, feeling their covers. It all felt the same, he thought with a smile. He picked up a few of the books, a series of murder mysteries by a popular author.

As he moved onto purchase them, a bright, colorful section of the place caught his attention. The walls were decorated with a kids theme. His feet dragged there and he began to look through the books. One of his favorite books from when he was a kid caught his attention, and he pulled it out. At the same time, someone else grabbed for the book. It was the last copy present. Both moved their hands away and faced each other. Their mouths dropped open.

"Angad?"

"Myra?"

"Hey!" they both said simultaneously, hugging each other.

"What are you doing here?" Angad asked.

"Well, I actually came here to visit my aunt, I am just buying some books for my little niece. Now, what are you doing here?" Myra asked.

"Oh, me, well, I am here for more than a few months, just buying some books…" Angad replied.

Myra raised an eyebrow. "In the kids section?"

Angad turned to look at the book that they both were looking at and turned down, a bit nervous. "Yea, for a kid I know"

"I see" Myra replied. "Well, can I have this book please?"
"No! I want it" Angad replied stubbornly.

"Come on Angad don't be so stubborn, I got it first"

"No I did"

"No I did!!"

"Myra!"

"Angad!!"

Angad took the book out and Myra snatched it towards her. Angad pulled it back harshly and Myra landed on top of him. They both laughed awkwardly and got up. Angad turned his head to get the book when his eyes fell upon Kripa, who was watching them with a hurt look on her face. His eyes widened and his mouth slightly opened. Myra took the opportunity to snatch the book and stuck her tongue out at Angad. "Cya!"

As she left with the book, Angad slowly got up and fixed his shirt, heading Kripa's way. When Kripa realized this, she quickly looked away, walking away from him, pretending she didn't see him. "Kripa!" Angad called after her. But she walked faster, climbing stairs to go to the second floor of the bookstore. She quickly ran up and hid behind a bookshelf, picking out a random book and pretending to read it.

Angad got to the second floor and looked around. Without realizing it, he reached the Love stories section. There was only one person present, a girl, total book nook, deeply immersed in some book, her face hidden by it. He decided to look for Kripa later and looked through the books, searching for a specific one. After a lot of searching, he realized that it was the book the girl was reading. He tapped her back.

"Excuse me, miss" The person didn't look up. He tapped again, and spoke a bit louder this time. The girl angrily looked up and Angad realized it was Kripa. "You?" they both said simultaneously.

"Hi" Kripa said with fake cheerfulness. She took the book and walked off to purchase it, with Angad tagging behind. Kripa purchased the book and moved away, while Angad made his purchases. From the corner of her eye, she watched the books he was purchasing. Some of them, she realized were children's books. Suspicion aroused in her mind and she began to think of the possibilities.

After a few minutes, Angad purchases the books and left the store, with Kripa walking along. "You want a ride?" Angad asked as he watched her walking away. "No, I'm good, I'd like to walk" she replied without turning around. "You sure?" he asked. This time she did turn around, and looking at Angad with a blank look replied. "Positive"

With an uneasy feeling, Angad sat down, and started the car, heading towards the orphanage.

This time, a surprise was waiting for Angad there. When he went to sign-in, the receptionist told him that the head of the orphanage wanted to see him. This made Angad a bit worried and uneasy, and he headed to the person's office. They had met a few times before, the man was in his mid-fifties, his name was Mr. Amin. Angad knocked on the door, and he was let in.

"Yes, Mr. Amin, you wanted to talk to me?" he asked nervously.

"Yes Angad, come on in, take a seat" Mr. Amin replied calmly. Angad sat down and faced Mr. Amin, who began to speak.

"Angad, I know you have become quite attached to Prateek, and I have been watching that he has become attached to you as well. I wanted to inform you something that has come to my attention. Prateek's mother, has decided, that he can be put up for adoption. As you know, this is an orphanage as well as a boarding school. Upon his mother's wish, he wasn't allowed to be adopted, but now she has signed an agreement which allows any eligible adult to adopt him." Mr. Amin paused and looked Angad straight in the eye. Angad was holding his breath, and his face looked pale.

"The agreement was signed yesterday, and already, we have a family willing to adopt Prateek. He is a very cute, fun-loving kid, and we weren't surprised at all at the early response. The family members will come to visit Prateek today at a scheduled time and make their decision. After then, only paperwork will be needed and they can then take Prateek home, in a few days. I wanted to tell you this, because Prateek is becoming spoiled by your love, and it will be hard for him to leave. I don't think his new family would allow for you to meet him like this. That's all I wanted to tell you. " He put a gentle hand on his shoulders and said softly.

"I know its hard son, I am sorry; I can't do anything about it. " Angad stayed still, his eyes a bit moist. He was shocked. How could this be possible? Spending time with Prateek was not a responsibility for him, it was a habit, it was a need. His thoughts directly moved to Kripa. Did Kripa know? Prateek called her mom… she wouldn't want to be separated from him. A thought then came to him.

"Mr. Amin, can you tell me Prateek's mother's name?"

"I'm sorry son, but that is confidential information, we can't tell you."

"Please Mr. Amin, its really important for me to know, cant you tell me without her knowing it?" Angad asked.

"No Angad" Mr. Amin replied firmly. "Prateek's mother has personally directed us not to give anyone any information about us. We cant tell you anything."

"Okay" Angad replied defeatedly. He slowly got up and left the room, heading towards Prateek's room.

On his way, he got an idea, and slowly slipped into an empty hallway. Carefully, he walked down and looked towards the doors, looking for the office that he knew existed around there. He finally found it. He turned the knob just to realize that it was locked. Shyt! He thought. He then got an idea.

Ten minutes later, Angad was standing in the office with the confidential papers. He had gotten in by picking at the lock. The tools for that came from… somewhere. He quickly opened the filing cabinets and looked at the files. They were labeled from A-Z, containing information about the children according to their last names. He realized that he didn't know Prateek's last name.

Slowly, he began to go through every file, when he reached K, he heard some noises in the hall. He quickly put the file away and peeked in the hall, someone was approaching. He quickly put the file away and sneaked out through a nearby window.

When he got out, he realized that he hadn't met Prateek and he could only visit him once a day. He groaned and hit his car angrily. He had done all that, and hadn't benefited at all. He decided to go back to look through the files the next day.

At home, Kripa was cooking dinner, lost in her thoughts. She was thinking about Angad and the girl she had seen with him that day. The girl was pretty, no doubt. She had a fair complexion, wavy brown hair, and innocent brown eyes. She looked Indian, and it seemed as if they were flirting with each other. But what confused her was the fact that both of them were in the kids section. Being the observant person she was, Kripa had made sure to see if the girl was wearing a wedding band.

She could tell from where she was standing that the rings in her hands were all artificial. Was her being single suppose to be a good thing or bad thing? Did Angad know her? How long did he know her? Were they dating? Did they like each other? Of course they liked each other, she thought. She was talking to herself she realized.

At the same time, she also realized that her sweater sleeve was on fire. She quickly moved her hand away and took off the sweater, and in that movement, her hand also caught on fire. She quickly opened the tap and put her hand underneath it, moaning against the pain.

A few houses down, another scene was going on. Karan and Ria were standing outside Ria's house, and Karan was speaking. Ria was nodding her head, her hands folded across her chest. A few minutes later, Karan pecked her on the cheek. She abruptly moved back, and he got into his car and left, without looking back once. Robotically, she went to her house, and went into her room. Slamming the door, she jumped on the bed and weeped.

Short, I know, sorry, sorry, triple sorry, I had exams, a project, and then a huge essay. Was busy. Hope some things are becoming a bit obvious and clear. i.e- the last paragraph between Ria and Karan, something happened of course, hopefully you guys have figure out what, I will give the details of it later.
