Reading all the posts this morning ... it's nostalgia . These posts have the actual Diwali fervour than the one we are all celebrating at home , it looks like. I think our parents generation was the most unadulterated one where they gave it their all to celebrate any festival even with limited resources. They just simply did not know how else to celebrate these festivals other than the way they did.

Yes there's something about amma, paatis, oil, smell of elaichi and the aroma of the lehiyam and the goodies made in no of batches tirelessly during the week of Diwali that felt like it when you would come bk from school. Pure joy then that we took for granted. The yellow cloth manja pai's gave way to nalli's , pothy's and Mummy daddy's poly bags When paati used to apply Haldi kumkum to the new clothes on the morning of oil bath ,my brother Used to shriek heart in his mouth of the colour on his new shirt's collar in his teens But this is refined now with elders Applying haldi kumkum to just the tray in which new clothes are kept in front of God for pooja 😆 😆 . The smell of smoke , the black smoke coming from the snake tabs in the match boxes , the anxiety to see which house front on the street had the maximum litter from the fire crackers we burst , the 5000/ 10000 wala that l used to save up for the start and grand finale that I used to take the lead in bursting in the morning while my brother watched trying to scare me off while I tried to light it, at the time of the initial spark to the thiri ... Some moments just stay and we have our parents to thank for this.

Deepavali Nal vazhthukkal. Happy Diwali everyone.May this Diwali bring in lot of good cheer, health and prosoperity.

Good day and Good evening folks.

I agree too actually. Our parents generation was the perfect one, with the right blend of modernization and tradition. Ours became one of 60-40, and now I would say it is 80-20

I told my boys they will have to wake up early on Saturday for Deepavali
The teen was so unhappy (I am so sad about it)

I told him "If u can do it for SATs and ACTs and Science Bowl tournaments, you can do it ONE Sat a year for Deepavali"

He didnt seem delighted by my explanation, I am not going to worry too much about it

Asma, Happy Deepavali to you as well, Ashu... you too

Sonal: I bet Delhi is crazy noisy and busy this evening. Punjabis go all out dont they?
I especially like the stair step mithais in stores...
My eyes would dart at the clusters of homeless people at every market, especially kids staring at the tons of mithai trays

I never had much money to buy them all a box of it back then. Now that I do I have not been back for Diwali once in the last 20 years

Bollywood should do something like that... they would get so much praise from me

But then wearing a Rs.25 lakh Maneesh Malhotra lehanga makes you so popular so I guess... I get it

I so wish I could be in Delhi or chennai tmrw. Haldirams and Bikanerwala in Delhi and Grand sweets and Adyar Anandbhavan must be craziest places on earth now. 😊

Nisha that 80-2O ... hope we all preserve it for them to observe and know . Yes the children do need to be pushed to be part of celebrations. I feel more than any festivals my daughter is more kicked about celebrating each of our birthdays. The suits I ordered online arrived yesterday . Our of the four I ordered, she usurped three. Right royally three of them are hanging new in her wardrobe . She's taller than me by an inch now at 5'6 She ends up raiding my wardrobe more often these days. Let me see if I can kick atleast her out of her bed by 6 tmrw for an oil bath.

I agree

When u look around its like EVERYONE is happy, until you look closer and find families huddled in brown torn clothes in the sideline waiting for a hand out

Kids going through garbage so they can find that one unlit fire cracker

Nisha, everyone of you all made it so nostalgic. Loved to read the chatter. Missed being online when it happened.

Every deepavali - our trips to Panagal Park to buy new clothes and firecrackers (not to mention hours that my brother and I spent to make a list within Appas budget). My maternal grandma used to come home to help with making snacks. My parental grandma and her had ton of gossips. They left my mom alone and moved into a bedroom with kerosene stove to make the snacks. Sitting and looking at them make the snacks was always a blessing not many had (ofcourse helped me make 30 bhoondi laddus in 30 mintues yesterday)
My mom made vada and sushiyam (jiggery sweet, dipped in batter and deep fried), idli and sambhar on deepavali morning. We have to shower, pray, eat a sweet before we go for the firecrackers - which was best part of deepavali other than showing off the new dress. 😳
Sigh - Miss those days - when one kid brings a 1000 wala and another kid brings 10000 wala and girls bragging over the Nadiya or Khusboo bangles with their dress. Ha Ha ...
I made Mysore Pak, Bhoondi. Planning to make some Thattai today. Amma will make murukku and halwa tomorrow. Off to a work "offsite" today/tomorrow. We will celebrate deepavali on Sunday.
