Chapter 6
It was wonderful to be childlike once in a while. They laughed at the various outfits in Lavanyas closet, made fun of her although maybe they shouldn't have but Arnavs nani was a bad influence and it was easy to get carried away and finally the dress. After a little persuading Khushi had put it on and a keen to see it nani complemented it greatly.
Nani was just too kind she thought as she ran back into the closest room to change back.. (Arnav's room) and looked in the mirror. She looked..well fat' she thought. She would never look as great as Lavanya did in her designer dresses and trendy outfits. A little bit annoyed at the way she didn't seem to look as great as Lavanya did Khushi curses herself for trying on the dress in the first place in a huff and goes to remove it only to see realize that the zip of the dress was still fastened and impossible for her to get to.
Annoyed still a little and now wanting to get out of this fast Khushi almost speeds towards the door but in doing so walks into the unexpected. A familiar collide to both of them Khushi looks up after a second to realize that she had just walked into Arnav. Up until now she hadn't thought about what this would look like from another's point of view but now she had suddenly come to face with him there was an crazy rush of akwardness. Here she was stood in her ex husbands bedroom in his girl friends dress.
"I was just .." (ham bas...)--
"All the other rooms were" how incredibly wrong did this seem she thought cursing herself the silly idea in the first place she did not know what else to say the situation spoke for its self.
Not sure what to make of it at first after the initial astonishment Arnav then went on to think about how he had never seen Khushi that way before. It may have been Lavanyas dress but the lady within it was what added to its glamour and Khushi looked apart from different very pretty.
He could see that there was a certain hesitancy or discomfort in the whole thing, she did not wear the dress with confidence but I guess that was understandable.
Not knowing quite what to say at this time Arnav eases the situation a great deal with his reaction as ever he is able to read Khushi somewhat to know what will help.
"Its okay, judging from her speed at which she was looking to leave the room and the attention she gave the fastening a the back on the dress he thought to ask.
"'Can I help?." Talking of the unreachable zip of the dress. Khushi could have easily denied and there would be great reason to as well but she didn't because there had always been something very gentlemanly about Arnav at least with her anyway.
Her eyes thanked him and she turned around so he could unzip the dress just enough to give her some way to change.
"I'll wait out by the pool" he said and took himself away to allow her to change even before she could suggest that she leave the room.
When khushi turned back she saw him walking out behind the open glass divide his back turned to her looking into the water in the pool.
As Khushi changed back into her saari she knew they were at a distance comfortable enough to have conversation. She cared and that's why she chose to speak on the matter. She thought a little bit about whether it was her place to speak or not and then after a short while as she adjusted the last details of her saari she decided it was apt.
"I'm sorry .. to hear about Lavanya"
"Don't be ..it ..
--wasn't supposed to be."
He didn't know what else to say because for some reason there was a sense of right and wrong, a sense of politeness even in conversation Arnav kept with Khushi and it had been that way during their marriage too. Also maybe he had come to terms with the event now and wished to let It go.
When khushi was done with her change of clothes it was a strange interaction between the two of them. Here there was mention of the inevitable always being the inevitable yet on the other hand here both of them were stood before each other.
Carrying the dress over her arm now .. Khushi who initially found the whole thing very embarrassing is rather settle.
She thanked him for giving her the space to change whilst her eyes apologized for the rudeness of it all actually it was more nani's idea.
Arnav smiled because he knew it would have been a little to do with grandmother too but he also knew that his that his former wife would never under go anything if her some part of her heart or mind wasn't intrigued either.
"You made the dress look beautiful .." he complemented and she took it with a smile.
Kaash .. (Only if..) before leaving the room with no intentions of doing such a thing ever again.
...
Everything in Raizada house seemed a little low, Khushi could understand why the servants were unhappy with her the next day she returned to work she'd given them a right ear full on mocking their boss disrespectfully, ASR had left for work but Nani seemed upset and Khushi didn't see reason why. Just yesterday she was happy that Lavanya had left actually more than happy.
But when catching sight of the date as Khushi went about her duty of looking after nani she realized that today was no ordinary day. Today would Arnav grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.
...
When ASR's office phone rang he had never thought it would be Khushi on the other end but for some reason it was good to hear her voice.
His second instict was to wonder whether everything was okay back home but when Khushi reassured him but spoke about Nani's upset today regarding the date Arnav realised that he had forgotten all about the significance of today.
Wound up in his own affairs it had passed him by and he hadnt even realised.
All she asked of him that too very politely was that if he would return home early this evening for nani and maybe pick up some of nanis favourite snacks on the way home.
He agreed - anything for his grandmother and he was grateful that Khushi had been their to save the day in some respects because he wouldn't have realized till it was too late.
...
Khushi kept an eye on nani throughout the day when she took to her room her medication she caught Nani looking at photo album.
Taking a seat next to Nani on her bedside Khushi could see that they were old pictures of Arnavs nani with her husband. She looked reminiscent, a little sad but the way one did when thinking up old memories.
One image bought a smile, whilst the next, a tear and maybe the third laughter again. That's the way it was.
One thing Khushi did wonder is what Arnav's grandfather was like. He looked like a lovely man from the images, tall dark handsome like Arnav in some ways, a remembrance there was.
Nana ji kaise they.. nani .. ? (What was he like nani)
She smiled, she couldn't possibly describe him, it was like trying to describe your feelings for someone you loved imensily but not just that all the little things about them and your memories with them too it was impossible.
She thought for a second and Khushi could see nanis' eyes light up with love.
"Arnav jaise .."
She said and naming some qualities that sounded similar to Arnavs some not so much. Even Khushi could see that Arnav did look a lot like his grandfather. Khushi admired how adorable a couple the grandparents were from nani's conversation and the images but her tears also upset Khushi too.
Maybe it was because both of them were upset for a love that they no longer had in their life's.
Interrupting the moment not allowing it to get any more emotional were two contrastingly smiling faces. ASR and Aman carrying what looked like lots of appetizing food and Arnav flowers for his favourite lady. The surprise appearance by them both cheered up nani.
Loved ones and food was enough to cheer up any grandmother and nani was no different. That afternoon they threw a mini party in shantivan. They had all of nani's favourite snacks and the boys had catered for themselves too with pizza.
It was nice, a little like old times khushi didn't know why but she repeatedly found herself looking towards Arnav. Sat in conversation with his grandmother, he was in the most natural of states unware that she was watching him of course. she didn't know quite why by her eyes seemed to go his way every time. There wasn't anything different about him was there he was same old Arnav Singh Raizada. In his usual formal attire made a little more comfortable now he was at home then why did her mind seemed to go his way again and again.
When she could no longer defer from it she decided to get up and walk to the kitchen with some plates.
Running water into the sink here surely she wouldn't think of him, out of sight was out of mind but not for the kings of Khushi.
She thought of him yet again and in a more vivid way this time.
...
She had leapt to the kitchen not because she wanted to be in there but because the women were teasing her about wedding night. Among them her friends and others khushi didn't know that this sort of thing actually happened. She was a new bride, the whole thing was so new to her and awkward. She would wish they would all just go away and so she took herself off to avoid it all. She'd do the dishes in the kitchen she thought.. just as she looked around for the cloth, liquid and ran the tap she realized she wasn't alone.
He too was in the same boat, making coffee in the corner of the kitchen he stood and she hadn't even realize that was until he spoke.
"You too", he said casually
"Tume bhi pareshan kar rahe hai" (they're bothering you too?..) he said whilst he stirred extra coffee into his mug. Of course the way his annoyance was going to be a little different he just hated the crowds of people in his home and the stupid giggles and small talk from the auntys and members of his family. Yes it was a wedding yes there was a wedding night, why did people have to be so childish about things. He just hated people. Her definition however might have been different but he still sensed the same annoyance in her. Common ground to make make conversation on was always good when you didn't really know each other all that well.
Khushi on the other hand was a little bit of the insecure bride but feelings like irriation always bought out the truth. Her irritation was equally seen in her eyes only she spoke in a more controlled fashion reminding herself that she was now married, the man before her was her husband, it was his house and she was a lady with responsibilities now. Also a little nervous in general she spoke with little eye contact with him.
"Hmm ajeeb se... saval kar rahe hai.. jinka hamare paas koi javab nahin hai.."
(Hmm..theyre all asking stupid, strange questions.)
He understood that for what it really meant, it meant the women were teasing her and she didn't appreciate that .
His reply however was a little unexpected taking his mug of coffee away with him he left with a response that sounded carefree but also left her in a little bit of a blush.. that was after she realized the possible implications of his words.
"I wouldn't worry you will have answers some day soon tell them you'll get back to them then."
...
Khushi switched off the tap quickly when she realized that her escaping the room this time hadn't worked well at all drying her hands she walked out deciding it was best she leave now. She didn't want to disturb nani and she rather not have spoken to Arnav and this time and so left her message of leave with hp alone.
...
Next chapter..
Khushi was ill, well that was the reason nani for not being able to work the next day and yet when Arnav went for his evening run after office time it was Khushi that happened to see in the park.
new morning, new day. what does the new day bring us. what will the morning be like after the storm that rages in my heart all night. What is...
