But he did hurt. Intentions definitely matter but what about Radha's pain? She should just forget it as if it never happened. Would LD have done the same thing? It breaks my heart to see LD not doing anything special to woo her.

I still remember the Cuticura (original) powder fragrance. I used it when I was a child and haven't since. But when I found the deo I bought it. We associate some fragrances and aromas with comfort and those are remembered by our brains for years.

Chapter 14

LD bathes and dresses in warm clothes quickly. He needs to get back to the jeep and bring the chain saw. He feared that one of the children would become sick and they wouldn't be able to take the child to hospital quick enough. He goes to Radha's apartment. The children were all away, neatly groomed and at the table. "Uncle, come eat." "Not Uncle'. Papa'," corrects Varun patiently. "Papa, eat with I," pleads Viv. "'Papa, eat with me'," correct Radha and LD automatically. Viv is getting frustrated. The adults are focused on correcting what he says instead of the food. LD smiles at him. "Papa will eat with all of you. Papa fed you dinner and so now all of you should feed Papa." "Okay Papa. Today you will not eat by yourself. We will feed you."

The children take turns feeding LD. Radha watches from where she was standing. Such a lot of love and joy. Again she starts wondering if she had made the right decision over three years ago. In her anger against LD and her father, was it the children she ended up punishing the most? Depriving them of a father's love and care? Varun mature beyond his years, trying to be a parent to his siblings. Charu who had been so vivacious had now become a quiet child so uncharacteristic of her age. The twins did not know what they were missing and so were unaffected so far. She noticed that while there was a lot of love being shared, LD wasn't getting much in. He must be hungry after not having much dinner last night.

"LD eat a couple of pancakes more. You will be hungry." "No, Mummy that is not how we play the game. You have to feed Papa otherwise he can't eat." Radha's and LD's eyes meet. Radha does not know what to do. LD didn't eat last night and if he didn't have breakfast, he would get acidity. LD starts to get up. Radha touches his arm and shakes her head. She takes a piece of pancake and offers it to LD. Without taking his eyes off Radha's face, LD accepts the food and eats it slowly savouring every morsel. Radha is ready with another piece. Piece by piece she makes LD eat the two pancakes. By the time he had finished, LD noticed that the children had gone. Brought up by Radha, they had remembered to clear their used plates and left them by the sink. "Thank you, Radha. It was like being in heaven. If I die today, I die a happy man."

Radha gasps and puts her hand on LD's mouth. "LD don't say such things." "Why Radha? Do you still care if I live or die? You have not cared in the last three years. Radha, I know what I did was terrible. I hurt you. I had vowed never to allow anyone to hurt you, but I, myself hurt you - hurt you terribly. I didn't mean to but I did. I stood outside your hospital room for the whole month you were there, begging everyone who went in to ask you to allow me in. But no one succeeded. And the doctor was quite clear that you were not to be stressed and so I couldn't force my way in. I am never going to try to justify what I did. What I did was wrong and you had every justification for being angry. I had no right to expect forgiveness, but was I such a bad person that you weren't able to find it in your large heart to allow me to even ask for forgiveness?" Radha is silent.

"I am going down to get the jeep. I need to cut a passage through the branches and I want to do it before the next round of rains start." As LD leaves, Radha is deep in thought. She had been angry and had the right. But had she been right? Why did LD come back into their lives? They had been in a safe cocoon till now. A wail from one of the twins shakes Radha back to the present. She goes to check on them. Viv had stubbed his toe. "Viv, you are fond of football, but you can't go around kicking everything. You are just like your Papa always in a hurry and never seeing where you are going." Realisation hits Radha. LD had never intended to hurt her. He had just taken decisions in a knee-jerk response and not thought about the fall out.
