Chapter 15

Radha is taken aback. How does one answer a question like that? The twins had grown up without LD. They hadn't started school and Radha didn't go out to colleagues' homes and so the concept of a father wasn't there for them. "When God makes a baby, He knows that the baby can't do anything for himself. So He gives the baby a Papa and a Mummy. Papa and Mummy look after the baby and make sure that the baby is fed and safe. When the baby is sick they take him to the doctor. When the baby is afraid they hold the baby and make him feel safe." "Just like Papa did when it started raining?" "Yes, Papa wanted you to feel safe and so he came as soon as he heard you crying." "But before that? Why did Papa not come?"

"Because Mummy was able to look after you without help from Papa. But this time you were all crying at the same time so Mummy need my help." Radha turns on hearing LD's voice. "LD?" "I brought the jeep over and climbed over the branches. I wondered if I could get a cup of tea before I started attacking the branches if I asked nicely." "Of course."

Radha sets a kettle to boil and goes to check on the other children. Varun was entertaining Charu and Sid by reading from his story book.

"Papa?" "Tell me Baby." "Will you come whenever I am scared? I don't like the lights and noise when it rains. I think Mummy is scared of the noise also." "Viv, I will be here whenever you need me. I promise you. You will never feel scared again." "LD, your tea. Viv, get down. Let Papa drink his tea." "No I want to stay with Papa." "Viv!" For the first time in his short life, Viv disobeys his mother and holds on tightly to LD. "No!" "Viv, let me drink my tea and then you can help me put the chain saw together. Deal?" "Okay, Papa," replies Viv and gets down. "Viv, but first you must say sorry to Mummy for not listening to her." "Sorry Mummy."

Holding his precious ball, Viv stays on the veranda watching LD use the chainsaw on the branches. In an hour, he has cleared a passage through the branches. They won't be able to take the cars out but they can walk out. "Radha, I have cleared a small passage through the branches. I'll go up to the main campus and see what is happening elsewhere. Do you want to come? You have all been cooped up in the house for three days now. If we take our phones and emergency lights, we can charge them in the offices and you can go to the store and pick any other supplies that you need." "Thanks LD. Have some tea while I get the kids ready."

The children were excited to get out of the house. "Varun, please sit in the front so that I can sit with Charu and your brothers at the back." "Okay, Mummy." LD noticed that a few more shops had opened since he had come two days ago. "Radha, do you need anything for the home." "Just some vegetables. I can pick them up later on the way home."

The children are dropped off at the crche and Radha goes to her office. Letting her laptop and phone charge, she goes through her emails. They had been trying to convince a young couple who were both music teachers to come over and join the school. They were not convinced about the security aspect. Their oldest son had been kidnapped while they were working in North Africa and they were still traumatised about it. "We now have on our staff a full time security manager. He has undergone a special high profile persons' safety management training in Australia and is on call for the Australian Embassy. His specific task is to upgrade all the security measures we have in place," she wrote to them. "Could we have a skype conversation with this person?" "Sure, I will arrange for that."

She rings up LD. "Radha, I am with the engineers of the Electricity Board. We are trying to get them to restore power to the campus we live in. They need some help." "Don't tell me you are climbing on the posts again." "If that would bring a smile back to your face I would. But no, they need some transportation arranged so that a new transformer can be brought up to replace the one that was hit by the lightning and I am flying down in the helicopter to pick up the engineers otherwise they will take another two days to get here." "You are flying down in this weather? Isn't it dangerous?" "It will benefit the whole school but the truth is that I can't bear to see you and the children struggling like this. Can we do the interview tomorrow?" "Sure. LD..." If I die today, I die a happy man' he had said in the morning. "Yes?" "Be careful." "Now I have to be! See you by this evening."

I don't know what to feel. Maybe killing LD is not such a bad twist till he doesn't come back like in Ekta's serials. I love the idea of incomplete love-stories and such. But the idea of LD dying is, however, too sad for all of us. :'(
