Chapter 16
Radha sets up the interview for the afternoon on the following day. She is almost done. She decides to do a bit of shopping while the children are still at the crche. When she is done, she goes to the crche to pick up the children. Her phone rings. "Hi Radha, I've just landed. I will be there in 30 minutes and take you home." "I can manage. Sameer is dropping us home." There was silence. "Fine, do what you want."
She was being churlish and she knew it but somehow, the cosiness of having LD around frightened her. He seemed to have shaken up the world that she had carefully built up over the last three years. The children had started calling him Papa'. What would happen when he left at the end of the year? He was not going to be around forever.
"Come on kids. We are going home. I want to get back before dark so that I can cook dinner. Sameer Uncle is dropping us." She had expected resistance from the children but they were ready to go home. They were almost home when Sid asked, "but what about Uncle. When he is coming?" "He will come later." "Will he come for dinner?" asks Charu. "I don't know." "Will he come to stay the night? I feel safe when he is here." "Are you saying Mummy doesn't make you feel safe?" "No but I feel safer when Pa..." Viv stops in mid-sentence as Sameer slams on the brakes. A huge bison was standing on the road. He was magnificent but there was no way they could drive past him without agitating him.
After half an hour, the bison moves off. Sameer drives them home and Radha picks her way through the path that LD cut for them with the children following her footsteps.
LD is sitting in his office. Over the last two days he thought he had made some progress. Interacting with the children and Radha. True, it wasn't normal as yet. They were not back to being husband and wife but they seemed to have moved to the point of being parents looking after their children together and then the cold response from Radha. He dumps the Vada Pav that he had picked up at the airport for Radha. Was he making two steps forward and one step backward or was he making one step forward and two backwards? A teardrop escapes and rolls down his face.
"Boy what are you still doing here? It is pretty late. Where are Radha and the kids?" "They have gone home. Sameer dropped them off." "So why aren't you there with them?" "I was just finishing up some work. It has stopped raining. Radha can manage." "Listen to a wise old man. Radha may be able to manage. But she will manage better with her husband beside her or at least within shouting distance. And how are you going to get reconciled if you keep away each time she says she can manage? You have to keep hitting at the mountain of misunderstanding if you are going to win her back."
How could he tell Sir that there was no misunderstanding? There was a very clear understanding that there had been a mistake made. He had made a terrible mistake. Trying to deal with his pain by himself instead of sharing it with his wife as he should have. At least when Radha kept Dadaji's role in the police complaint a secret, she was trying to protect him from pain. He had no such excuse.
Radha starts putting dinner together. It was late and there had been no signs of LD returning home. The rain had stopped and so the children preferred to stay in their own room after dinner. As she blows out the last candle, Radha wonders where LD was. His words was I such a bad person that you weren't able to find it in your large heart to allow me to even ask for forgiveness' kept ringing in her ears as she tried to sleep.
In the morning, Radha wakes up to a buzzing noise.
