PART 90
"Listen Sujit," said Pawan as he placed his hand on his friends shoulder, "You need to tell all of us everything in detail. Maybe we can help you."
Sujit glanced at Ram for a short glimpse with hesitance. Ram noticed his uneasiness and tried to comfort him. He said,
"Sujit, please do not think of us as other than your own. We both are going through troubled stages of life now, and I think me and my brother will be able to help you. Ofcourse, its your choice. If you dont want us to be here then we can leave you with some privacy, it won't be any harsh matter to us."
Just as Ram and Lakshman were about to stand up and leave, Sujit got up himself and said,
"No no Sir! I never meant any thing that way. I was just not wanting you to feel troubled in all this. Already you have so many things going over you and.. Please sit Sir."
Ram smiled and sat back down. He said,
"Sujit, when a person himself is in worries, only he can feel for someone else. And I feel for you. Tell us what happened and clear your heart out. You will feel much lighter."
Sujit smiled a little.
"Thank you so much Sir. I feel much better now."
"So, tell us now Sujit. We are all ears," said Pawan.
Sujit began,
"My brother, Balveer, is 3 years elder to me. From childhood itself, he has been my one and only confidant. After Mom and Dad passed away when we were in our teenage years, he worked day and night and made this business stand. He left school for me and made me study. He is wealthy from the mind and heart. I admire him. We even got married on the same day. My Bhabi's name is Tara and my wife's name is Ruma. Everything was going well for us but..
That Raghavan. He and my brother have a huge past. Many years back when our business was still in its startup, he wanted to buy our company. But Bhaiyya refused, obviously. And then a legal battle ensued. After a long case, Raghavan lost. This left him shocked because he had underestimated my brothers power. And so he kept at peace with Bhaiyya, but only till recently.
I dont know, it must be because of his plan to attack you Sir, but Raghavan had come again a few weeks back to ask Bhaiyya to sell this place. Rather threatened. And this time, Bhaiyya gave him an even dangerous warning. But Raghavan had his plan well chalked out. He sent two of his most trusted and powerful goons to beat Bhaiyya up. One of them already left before they arrived here, from fear I guess. And the one who came here, he was horrendous. He got into a physical fight with Bhaiyya and it went to the point of gun firing. I was at home with Bhabi and Ruma most of the time. But on the last day of the fight, things got bad.
Bhaiyya was face to face with the goon. He kept on firing till his bullets ran out and he ran inside a small abandoned hut in this area. I came out of the house and I met Bhaiyya right outside the hut. He just told me - "Do not do anything Unless I tell you too. Be here till I dont come out. A small mistake from your side and we can be in trouble."
That day a rough storm had hit the sea, I remember. I kept waiting outside. I heard screams and yells and couldnt go in. Bhaiyya had told me not to. It started raining heavily. I couldn't take it any longer. I went a little inside, only to see pool of blood dripping out. And a vicious laugh. I was scared. And in that mind of mine, I .. I committed a mistake. I ran out and waited with my gun, so as to kill the goon as soon as he came out. I heard footsteps and I waited anxiously. A few minutes later, I saw a shadow emerging and I turned and I... I shot."
"Whom?" asked Pawan, sensing the twist in the tale.
"Bhaiyya. His laughter inside the hut was nothing like I had gauged of him before. It was evil. He had killed a man with his own hands but, he had no repentance. Instead, he saw himself to be all powerful and mighty. I was horrified on seeing this side of him. I left him there out of shock and horror and came back running here. I hid here for two days and when I went back..." Sujit's voice broke, "I saw what I never thought about in my wildest dreams. I was barred from entering the house, and when the guards called Bhaiyya to the gate along with Ruma and Bhabi. ..He... "
"He slapped me. He said - "Sujit, this wound I have received on my hand is not a simple one. It is a wound of treachery. I have not seen a second ungrateful person like you!! You beast! You rascal! You illegitimate person!"
I tried to explain things to him but he didnt give me a chance to even speak. He beat me, kicked me and harassed me. I was bearing it all but.. Things took a turn when I came to know that he had got all the property written in his name and he didnt leave a single penny for me. He even ripped off my bank accounts. And worse.. he.."
Sujit gulped.
"He lusted for Ruma. He tried to molest her and.."
The man broke into tears. Sujit's tears spoke tons. Anger, frustration and hatred all at once.
Ram breathed heavily. He understood exactly what Sujit felt. Tears of anger started brimming up in his eyes too.
Lakshman could not take this nay longer. Flashes of his Bhabi and Wife ran in front of his eyes and he kept recalling Siya's plea and cry. He stood up and said,
"Thats enough. I am sorry to say this, but your brother Balveer is no less than Raghavan. I .."
"Lakshman!" said Ram looking straight up at him, signalling him to stop. Lakshman sat down but the expression on his face didnt change.
"He's not wrong, Sir," said Sujit in a lost voice, "Bhaiyya showed the same traits of Raghavan. Maybe the circumstances were different but.. What is a crime is a crime."
There was a moment of silence. Nobody spoke. They didnt understand what to retort with.
"Sujit, where is Ruma now?" asked Pawan.
The very reference of Ruma made him scared.
"She is with Bhaiyya, for all I know. I am worried for her. I am the one who married her against her fathers wish, and it is my responsibility to keep her happy. But look at me, I am sitting here helpless like an idiot. If something happens to her, I will never be able to forgive myself.. "
"Who said you are helpless Sujit?" said Pawan. His voice had love, respect and care for his best friend. "We are all with you. No matter what happens, I will stand by you. Balveer Bhaiyya is like my own brother, but I will need to look into this matter."
"And not only you Pawan," said Lakshman, "We too are here. So, what is the plan?"
Sujit cleared his throat," Lakshman and Ram Sir, I am sorry to put you into all this, but what I am thinking of will require your help."
"Yes please tell us, we will help in whatever way we can," said Ram.
"Thank you Sir. I believe that the only way to teach Balveer Bhaiyya what is right and what is wrong, is to punish him. And I intend to punish him with jail."
Ram and the others looked at him with a straight expression. However, their minds ran in wild directions.
While Pawan thought about how the relation between the two of them was torn, Ram couldn't comprehend this kind of a relation between brothers. He himself had 3 brothers and never had he imagined that the relation between Siblings could be as such. Yes, he understood how the crimes Balveer had committed against Sujit were unforgivable, but just the very fact that Balveer could DO SO was dangerous.
"What are you all thinking?" asked Sujit in a worried tone, thinking all of the would back off.
"Nothing," said Pawan. "But where is the police ?"
"There IS no police here, Pawan, and you know that. We have to take him to the police station."
"Well, I think we could help you in this. But dont you think we should negotiate with him once?" asked Ram.
"It will be of no use, Sir. I tried, but he didnt listen. Oh and by the way, we will have one more person to help us."
"Who?" asked Lakshman.
"Angad. Bhaiyya's son. He is his only child and Bhaiyya and I always pampered Angad from his childhood. But that boy, though he is just in his teens, he has a wonderful sense of responsibility. He himself called from England and enquired about Bhaiyya. Perhaps Bhabi told him. He said he will be coming in a few days and help us in rectifying Bhaiyya."
It was fascinating for all of them to see the values that run through the family, and how it all was disassembled due to one person. Thats why perhaps it is so important to follow your own path, and make a right path, because it unprecedentedly affects others.
"Very well then. If that is what we intend to do, we should make our plan. What is your idea?" asked Ram.
Sujit picked up a stick and started drawing on the sand. The others listened carefully and planned every step of execution. There were many risk factors and uncertainties, but when something is done for a good cause, God himself leads the way.
By the time all this finished, it was evening. It was not until someone mentioned food that Pawan, Ram and Lakshman felt hungry.
Sujit stood up and folding his hands said,
"I am so very sorry. I... I couldnt even treat you well. Please wait for a short while, I will bring you some food."
He walked out.
All the three sat silently and waited. It was weird for the two brothers to sit there and get involved in everything even though they didn't know what their relation with Pawan was. All that they knew was that he was a well wisher. And someone was in trouble, like them.
Sujit came back with three plates and handed it to them.
"Your food?" asked Pawan.
"I will have later, first you all have it." replied Sujit.
Ram and the others started eating. They relished the simple, coastal food.
It was nighttime. Pawan, Lakshman and Ram were awake by the shores, sitting on small boulders and staring into the sea as the wet wind fluttered into their hair. Ram and Lakshman removed their beards and overcoats. It was unbearable now.
Lakshman stared into the sea. It appeared silver in the moonlight. Far, far away, his wife and mother-like Bhabi were kidnapped. And that ocean was the only barrier. Detest and hatred for the water rose in him, but he realised his childishness. What sin had the water done? It was only a host of life. Lakshman took a deep breath. This host of life seemed murderous to him.
"Sir, if you permit me, can I tell you a small story now?" said Pawan in a warm voice suddenly.
Ram and Lakshman werent in the mood, but the warmth in his voice made them felt better.
"Please do."
Pawan looked down and his voice lowered immediately.
"Once, there was a boy. He lived in a big house with his parents, loving parents and his home schooling teacher. The boy had not a single worry in this world and was lively, jubilant and had everything he wanted at his feet.
One day, when the boy was in his teens, his teacher took him out on a tour of the village adjacent to his city. He had never seen the village and was very excited. To him, a village was a place of colours and festivals and laughing children. But when he reached there, he saw a different scene. No other colour he saw other than black. Darkness everywhere, not a beam of light. He heard the cry of a woman and a child. He later came to know that the lady and her child were being kicked out of their house, only because the woman had given birth to a girl. That broke him completely. What he saw of his world was so much more happy. He felt blessed and helpless at the same time. He felt angry and when he came back to his house, he asked his father as to why there was so much inequality in this world. His father smiled softly and patting his head said that there was nothing he alone could do about it. His father was a philanthropist, but sole efforts went unnoticed. His teacher said, that one day a man will come and save the day for not only those people but for those who suffer under a mental burden.
The boy grew up quickly. That thought remained in his mind for the rest of his life.
On his 20th birthday, the boy asked as his gift, to be taken to the same village where he had been earlier, to see how it was now. And when he reached there, he was surprised. It was bright and lit, water to every household, and even better, he saw little girls going to school. The boy was happy and when asking about the new condition to the village head, he came to know that the village had been adopted by a businessman. The boy made it his next goal to meet the businessman and thank him, because that man had restored his faith and humanity. After lots of research and contacting, he finally came to know who the man was. He was surprised to know that the man was no more than 5 years elder to him, and that he had adopted and remodified hundreds of villages like those. That inspired him to work as hard as he could, irrespective of what he was or what he had.
The boy left his house for a job in a small city. Simultaneously he tried to meet the businessman. He was a busy man, and getting to meet him wasnt that easy. However, after many months, he got the chance to meet him at a press meet. Oh, and I forgot to mention, in the time the boy had also gotten into the police service. He felt that was his first step to being more helpful to the people around him.
So, he was told to be the police guard for the businessman at that press meet. The boy waited anxiously to meet his hero, and when he walked in, the boy joined his hands together and dropped at his feet. He said - "Sir, thank you. Thank you for being the person you are. What you have done for the people of our country is unmatchable. I truly respect you Sir." The man with the magical persona and godly aura helped him up by the shoulders and hugged him, much to the boy's surprise.
"Friend, you are the reason I work. Just to see the smile on your face. Just pray that I can continue to do all this," he said.
The boy had tears in his eyes and he felt the genuine warmth of the man too . At the end of the event, the man even gave him his contact number but unfortunately the boy misplaced it. And since then, he had been wanting to meet him again.
Years passed, but the love for his hero still remained in the boy's heart. He was posted to a very remote area and the businessman rose to new heights.
When the boy had seen the man, he was short and simple. But when he met the man later where he was posted, he was different. And that is why, the boy couldnt identify him. Turns out, the same business man had been living in proximity with the boy, now senior officer, but the former never realised. But when he did, he didnt leave a stone unturned to help him again. "
Pawan stopped. He had tears falling from the corners of his eyes and a broken voice. He looked at Ram and smiled. He noticed Ram had tears brimming too.
"And I," he continued, "Was the boy, and you are my hero."
