Track 9 - A Head Full of Dreams, Coldplay

The gang spent their afternoon merrymaking and catching up. There was just so much to tell. Seven years worth of stories to be told, hugs to be exchanged and laughs to be shared. Which they did, happily. It was a little awkward at first, especially for Armaan & Riddhima and Rahul & Muskaan, but soon, things settled and they were all laughing and talking.

Sometime during their talks, Rohan had come home and made his way up to Jaanhavi's room. Armaan and Rahul just shook their heads at him.

"How long? Rahul asked Armaan.

Armaan looked at his watch and calculated before answering, "5 hours and 13 minutes. That's got to be a new record!

"What are we talking about? Tamanna asked as she came into the living room after her nap. She'd been completely exhausted because of the conference and then with Jaanhavi's scare, hadn't been able to sleep properly last night, so she'd been resting.

"Rohan waited for 5 hours before he came here to check on Jaanhavi, Rahul answered Tamanna as she sat down beside Armaan and rested her head on his shoulder.

"You're kidding, right?! She asked surprised. "5 whole hours!

"Yep! I can't believe it either! Armaan told her.

"Why is that so shocking? Muskaan asked. "5 ghante hi hue hai, 5 janam nahi.

Rahul looked at Muskaan as if she'd grown a third head and started laughing loudly. "Rohan ke liye toh 5 nahi, 500 janam ho gaye honge, he replied. "Jaanhavi se ek minute door raha nahi jaata usse. Aur jab woh bimaar ho, tauba tauba. Ek second ke liye apni aankhon ke saamne se hathne nahi deta, Rahul explained to Muskaan.

"Awww, Nikki commented. "That's so sweet! And this man here, she said, pointing to Abhi, "He doesn't even care if I'm living or dying. Abhi, please learn something from Rohan.

This set everyone off again.

In the evening, Jaanhavi finally woke up and Rohan brought her down to spend time with the others. Introductions were made and Jaanhavi was very excited to meet everyone else and get to know them, especially after she found out that Armaan & Rahul had done their internship with them and were actually quite close to them before moving to New York.

"Nice! She commented. "Now I'll know all of his secrets. He never tells me anything! She'd exclaimed.

Anjali had laughed at that. "Whatever you want to know, I'm your girl! Please, don't hesitate to ask me anything. I can tell you many stories about both these boys here, she said, pointing at Rahul and Armaan.

"I'll take you up on that, Anjy Di, Jaanhavi promised. Then, after hesitating, she continued, "I hope you don't mind me calling you Di.

"Arre, of course not! You're Armaan's sister. And Armaan's one of my best friends, Anjali replied, throwing a quick smile in his direction. Armaan grinned widely on hearing that.

"Thank you! Jaanhavi burst out before hugging Anjali tightly. "You're awesome!

It didn't take long for Jaanhavi to gel with the gang and soon she was talking to them as if she'd known them for years and years instead of mere minutes. There was just something about the family that made you like them instantly, Riddhima thought. Maybe it was their quick wit and charm or their happy go lucky nature or their boisterous talks, whatever it was, the Malliks always made you feel like you were at home and she really liked that about them. She remembered when she'd met Armaan's parents for the first time. She'd been so nervous then but both of them had instantly made her feel comfortable with their talks and actions, just like Jaanhavi was doing now.

"Okay! Now that everyone's here, it's time, Tamanna announced after a while.

"Time for what? Naina asked her.

"Armaan's going to sing for us! Tamanna replied gaily. "It's tradition. Whenever we're all together in the evening, Armaan sings.

Armaan smiled. Hearing him sing made Jaan and Tammy happy and that's all that mattered. Making those two ladies happy was all Armaan did. Rahul often joked that Armaan had spoilt them so much that they were both huge divas now and that their husbands would have a hard time because of all the tantrums they threw. Armaan would always shrug and say that if those boys couldn't fulfill their desires, they didn't deserve his girls anyway.

Tamanna looked at him with her puppy dog expression and pouted. Of course Armaan would never deny her anything in the world. Tamanna rarely, if ever, asked Armaan to do something, so he was always eager to please her. She was such an amazing young woman and she'd already been through so much in her short life. Still, she'd come out of all of it and was living life to the fullest. Armaan was in awe of her and her bravery. He wasn't sure if he could have done what Tammy was doing - laughing, living, being happy - if he'd been in her place.

"Armaan! Tamanna whined, bringing him out of his thoughts. "Please sing for us!

"As if I'd ever say no to anything you asked, Armaan replied cheekily, placing a kiss on the top of her head. "Your wish is my command, Madame.

While the others laughed at his antics, Riddhima shuddered. She remembered a time when Armaan said those words to her, and only her. Now, he was repeating them to this... This girl. Admittedly, Tamanna seemed to be a nice person, but Riddhima couldn't help but hate her, only because Tamanna was so close to Armaan when Riddhima wasn't. Seeing the two of them together pricked Riddhima's heart badly. But, what could she do? Armaan was happy with Tamanna and all Riddhima wanted from her life was for him to be happy. All she could do was curse herself for being so stupid. How could she even think that she could live without him in her life? She should have said something then. He was there, waiting. Waiting for her. And she'd turned away. Now, today, the situation was reversed. She was the one all alone and he had someone by his side. Karma really was a bitch.

Seeing them together actually made Riddhima's heart break. For a moment she wondered if she could survive this pain. How had Armaan done it? How had he seen her with Sid every single day and smiled? Not only that, he'd been instrumental in trying to sort all the differences between her and Sid. How did he survive it? He was really a strong man. Riddhima was sure that bringing her and Sid closer must have shattered Armaan to his soul, but he'd done it all with a smile on his face. How?

And, he was such good friends with Sid too! Riddhima couldn't even fathom speaking to Tamanna because she was sure she wouldn't be able to be civil, but Armaan & Sid were like brothers. Armaan shared a deep camaraderie with Sid, like he did with Atul & Rahul. Yes, their relationships were different - Armaan thought of Atul & Rahul as his brothers in arms and Sid was like his kid brother - but, they were just as deep and meaningful. Riddhima knew Armaan didn't know how to fake it when it came to relationships, so she knew that Armaan genuinely liked Sid and cared for him a lot, because Armaan wasn't someone who would put up a show in front of others and behave differently behind closed doors. How did he even bear to do it?

"Any requests? Armaan asked, pulling Riddhima out of her thoughts. She looked around and saw that Armaan was sitting on the piano bench with a smile on his face.

"Whatever you want, Jaanhavi replied. Armaan smiled.

"Liar, he said. "I know you want your song.

This made Jaanhavi laugh. "Of course I want my song. But a couple of songs before that. Please, she pleaded with a puppy dog expression that always got her anything she wanted as far as Armaan was concerned.

"Fine, Armaan agreed. "But, we'll start with a special song for a special person.

"Ooohhh! Everybody in the room chorused teasingly. "Who's this someone special? Tamanna asked.

"Oh, she'll know, Armaan replied cryptically.

With that, he turned around and started playing

As the opening notes of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls started playing, Abhi interrupted Armaan.

"Uh, Armaan. Sorry to interrupt. But, can you please play something else? He asked.

"Why? Armaan asked confused as he stopped playing and looked up at Abhi.

"Ummm... Abhi hesitated.

"What? Armaan asked.

Nikki who knew that Abhi had stopped Armaan from playing the song because of her intervened. "It's nothing, Armaan. Abhi is being stupid. Please play, she said. She wanted to hear this song. It had been ages.

"No, Nikki! Abhi interjected. "You hate that song! He exclaimed. He turned to Armaan. "Actually, Nikki doesn't like this song. At all, he explained to Armaan. "That's why I was asking you to play something else.

Armaan was shocked on hearing Abhi say this. Nikki hated this song? What? How? He still remembered when this song had released. It had been Nikki's favourite. She'd beg and plead Armaan to play it for her all the time when she came over. She had even learnt to play the piano chords for this song. It was the only song she could actually play on the piano. They used to sit on the bench and play this song together for hours on end. He'd become so practised at it, he could play it with his eyes closed. And even after all these years, he still could.

"Nik, is this true? Armaan asked her.

Nikki nodded guiltily.

"What? Since when? He asked her.

"I haven't heard it in the past 7 years, Nikki answered.

Oh, so that's why. Nikki hadn't heard it since he'd left.

"I'm sorry, Armaan told her.

"I missed you, Nikki replied.

Both of them were crying by now. "Come here, you idiot! Armaan exclaimed as he stood up from the chair and opened his arms for her.

Nikki didn't waste a second before she was up and threw herself in his arms.

"You're an asshole, Armaan Mallik, she stated as she hit his back.

"I know. I'm sorry, Armaan replied, hugging her tighter.

"It's okay, Nikki answered.

They pulled back and Armaan took Nikki's hand, pulling her down on the bench with him.

"We'll play together, he announced. "You still remember how to, don't you? He asked after a minute.

"Of course I remember. It's the only song I know! Nikki exclaimed.

"Okay, then. From the top! Armaan exclaimed.

Armaan started playing again and this time, Nikki's fingers moved on the piano in coordination with his with utmost finesse.

As the last notes rang out in the house, Armaan looked at Nikki. She'd started crying halfway through the song and now the crying had turned into earnest sobbing. She hugged Armaan tight as she rested her head on his chest and just cried. "I love you, she told him.

Armaan smiled delightedly when he heard that. "I love you, too, you buffoon. But, please, please, please stop crying now. It's ruining your makeup. And we both know you look like a witch without it.

It worked. Nikki gave a watery chuckle as she smacked his arm. "Armaan! You're an idiot! She exclaimed. It took her sometime, but Nikki eventually calmed herself down and pulled away from Armaan.

"You okay? Armaan asked. She nodded.

"Sorry for that everyone! She said, turning to the crowd.

Everyone was looking at Armaan, surprised. They had never heard Armaan sing before. They didn't even know that he had such a beautiful voice. It was like sunshine and chocolate and rainbows and rum. So, so, so beautiful.

Riddhima was absolutely mesmerized. Listening to Armaan, she knew that she could spend forever just listening to him sing. He was such a great vocalist. His voice had made her feel at peace for the first time in 7 years. She hadn't felt so content since she'd left him in that locker room and finding even a semblance of peace after so long was like a boon to her. She wished that Armaan could keep singing forever and that she could just spend her life listening to him, cocooned in his voice, the timbre on his tone providing her with warmth and love and security.

"Wow, Armaan! Sid exclaimed. "You're such a good singer. I did not know that! His voice brought Riddhima out of her thoughts.

Armaan looked at him and smiled. "Thanks, Sid! I'm glad you liked it.

"Nikki, Abhi started, but was interrupted by her before he could say anything.

"Yes, I haven't heard that song in years, but I love it, she told him. Everyone looked really confused on hearing that. So, she explained.

"Actually, this is kind of our song, she began, pointing her finger at herself and then Armaan. "I absolutely loved the song ever since it released and I'd always make Armaan play it for me whenever I went to his house. I even learned how to play it from him and then we used to play together. This song has a lot of memories attached to Armaan. And, after Armaan left, I couldn't bear to hear it without remembering him and crying, so I didn't listen to it at all.

Abhi nodded in understanding and gave her a tight hug.

"Okay! Enough of the emotional talks! Jaanhavi exclaimed. "I want more music! She turned to Armaan. "Play my song, please, she requested.

"Aye, aye, cap'n, Armaan replied.

"What's your song? Nikki asked as she took her place beside Abhi and rested her head on his shoulder.

"Shhh. Listen to it, Jaanhavi reprimanded.

Armaan laughed. Jaan was such a baby. But she was his baby and he was just so happy she was okay. He'd been scared out of his mind when he'd gotten that phone call telling him that she'd been in an accident. Jaan was the most important person in his life and he couldn't bear to lose her. Again. He'd already lived without her for 8 years. He didn't have the strength to do it even for 8 seconds again. It was already so difficult for him knowing that she would get married in a few days and leave this house. There would not be anymore early morning cuddles or late night coffees or reading in front of the fireplace or watching silly animated movies till 4 in the morning or anything else. He'd tried so hard to convince Rohan to move in here, but of course, all his pleas had fallen on deaf ears and Rohan had insisted that he'd continue living with his parents. Armaan had even tried to bargain for a 50-50 stay, stating that they could live with the Mehras for 6 months and with him for the other 6 months, but Rohan had laughed him off and pulled him into a tight hug. He'd said that he would never, ever stop Jaanhavi from visiting Armaan whenever she felt like it, even if it was 2 in the night and he was welcome to do the same.

Logically, Armaan knew that what he was asking for was a lot and no one in their right mind would agree to it, but he still hoped that maybe someday, Rohan would agree. Wishful thinking, he reminded himself.

"Uh, Armaan! You in there? Rohan asked as Armaan sat still, lost in his thoughts.

"Huh? Armaan replied, dazed.

"You okay? Rohan asked again.

Armaan looked at him and nodded. "Yeah. Just thinking, he answered offhandedly.

Then, he turned around and started playing again. It was Jaan's song, and it was very, very, very close to his heart.

Now that she's back in the atmosphere

As always, when he was finished playing, Jaan was wiping away at her tears, as was Tamanna. Rahul and Rohan had huge smiles on their faces as they fondly shook their heads in exasperation at the two ladies who always, always got emotional when Armaan played one of their songs.

"Wow. That was really beautiful, Armaan, Anjy said once Armaan was done. "I must say, you have a beautiful voice. And Baby Joshi loves it.

"Yeah? Armaan asked, excitement clear in his voice.

"Uh huh, Anjali replied. "He's always kicking up a storm in there and making me uncomfortable, but when you were singing, he was so peaceful.

"I'm glad! Armaan exclaimed, getting up and pulling Anjy in for a hug.

Anjali laughed. "By the way, she added conversationally, "this is one of Ridzy's favourite songs. f**k whatever Ridzy felt about Armaan moving on or deserving someone better or any other stupid bullshit Riddhima thought. Yes, maybe Armaan had moved on and maybe he didn't want to be with Riddhima any more, but that decision should be his and his alone. Riddhima had no place deciding that for him. Anjali felt that she was being stupid and a huge idiot by not telling Armaan about her and Sid's annulment, but she'd promised Riddhima that she wouldn't tell anything to him. However, Anjali had not promised that she wouldn't try getting them together using other sly means. And she'd been noticing. Armaan and Riddhima hadn't spoken to each other directly. They'd been exchanging occasional glances and that eye lock when they were talking about Armaan's career as an orthopedic surgeon had spoken volumes. She wanted Armaan to know everything and then make an informed decision as to whether or not he wanted Riddhima back in his life.

Riddhima, on the other hand, could not believe that Anjali had just so casually dropped her name in the conversation. She'd been avoiding direct conversation with Armaan ever since their talk in the hospital because she wasn't ready to face him yet. She was afraid that if she talked to him, she wouldn't be able to hold back and tell him everything and just throw herself in his arms begging for another chance. But, she couldn't do that. So, the best way was to avoid him. Which had been able to manage as successfully as expected. But now, there was no other option. She would have to talk to him, especially cause Anjali didn't have brains and had just told him that she loved this song. Which, she did, by the way. But she didn't want to talk to Armaan about it.

"So, you like this song? Armaan asked her, taking her by surprise. She wasn't sure if Armaan would actually initiate conversation with her but he had.

"Uh, yeah, Riddhima replied timidly. "It's a very beautiful song.

"It is, isn't it? It's my most favourite song ever! Jaanhavi cut in, saving Armaan the trouble.

He didn't want to talk to Riddhima directly, but he didn't have any other option seeing as how Anjali had brought her up in the middle of their talk. It was the polite thing to do. And, Jaan & Tammy thought the two were good friends, so they would definitely find something fishy if he didn't talk to her. So, he had.

He looked at Jaan and was thankful that she seemed to have engaged Riddhima in talks about how absolutely amazing the song was and how the songwriter was an absolute genius. He laughed at that.

"I absolutely love, love, love Reve, Jaanhavi announced at the end of her rant. Reve being the artist who'd sung this song originally.

"Me too! Riddhima exclaimed. "He's my favourite. Gosh, his voice is like honey. And the lyrics. Oh my! His lyrics are so beautiful and poignant and gaaahhh! I don't have enough words to describe how much I love him! He's just... He's Reve. And I'm a Dreamer. That's all.

Dreamers were what the legions of Reve fans called themselves. It was their fandom name like Sheerios and Potterheads and Cumberbitches.

"Oh my god! Another Dreamer in the house! This is so amaze! Jaanhavi exclaimed. "You have to help me put together the set list for the wedding, Riddhima Di. Please! She pouted. Apparently, Riddhima wasn't immune to her pout either and found herself agreeing to it immediately. Jaanhavi was such a warm person, you couldn't help but love her instantly. And, she was about to get married to Rohan, who happened to be a very important person in her life. She wanted to bond with Jaanhavi. It was very essential that they be on good terms.

"Nooo! Armaan moaned, when he heard the talk about set lists. "You're not making a wedding playlist entirely out of Reve songs. I forbid it, he ordered.

Jaanhavi laughed. "My wedding, my rules. Besides, Rohan doesn't have any issues with it. Do you, Rohan? She asked, turning to Rohan.

Rohan shook his frantically. "Absolutely not. In fact, you know how much I love Reve! A complete Reve playlist for the wedding sounds awesome! He added the last part looking at Armaan and smirking.

"Traitor, Armaan cried, pointing at Rohan.

"Shut up, Armaan! You know all of us in the family are huge on Reve. Don't diss him, Rahul reprimanded.

"Come on! I mean, yes, he's... Fine, good enough. But all his songs? Why? He asked.

"Please, Dada. Don't do this. You know how important it is, Jaanhavi told him, her voice low and her expression tender.

Yes, Armaan knew. He knew exactly why it was so important to her. It was because he was Reve.

And, here we have it! New chapter of TDBU as promised! I hope you guys liked it! Yes, I know that the pacing in this one is very slow, but that's the way it's going to be! I have so much to show, and all of it by the time Jaanhavi & Rohan's wedding is done. So, it is going to go at a very slow pace.

Also, HELL YES TO CLIFFIES! More about who Reve is and how Armaan became Reve in the coming chapters. Pehle toh maine socha ki nahi bataate about this and we'll do a grand reveal jab baaki sabko pata chalega, but mujhe pata hai, tum sab kameene tab tak apni koi theory ya philosophy jhaadte. Aur kuch log guess bhi kar lete. Toh abhi hi bata diya!

I hope ki sab satisfied hai that the gang is not going to sit idle and see the AR Angst Show aur kuch karenge. Toh, that will be interesting! And, hell yes to music! Ab Armaan Music Producer hai, singer bhi hai, toh is waali story mein bohot gaane honge! I hope tum logon ko woh achcha lage!
