Previously On...
Armaan and Nikki bonding. Anjy plots to get Armaan and Riddhima back together. We find out that Armaan is Reve, a famous singer, and that Riddhima is his huge fan.
Track 10 - My Immortal, Evanescence
Two people, standing in a room full of beds, hugging each other... A hand, placing a ring on the fingers of another... "Ab tumhe mujhse koi alag nahi kar sakta... "Armaan! She shouted, coming in between the bullet and him...
"BASKET! Armaan cried, as he finally woke up from a fitful sleep. He was drenched in sweat and he was crying, his breathing heavy.
He hadn't had this nightmare in months. In fact, since the wedding date had been fixed, all his nightmares were focused on the day that he'd found out that Jaanhavi had run away from home. He supposed that seeing Riddhima for the first time in 7 years had triggered this.
He absolutely hated this. In all these years, he'd grown accustomed to waking up from nightmares every single night, but even after so many years, this one still shook him to the core. Reliving that day, watching Riddhima take the bullet for him, not knowing whether she was going to live or die... It was too much. And, it seemed to be the only nightmare that had such vivid detail. When he dreamt about the night he'd found Tamanna in her house or when he'd had to deliver Rahul with the news that his father had passed away or when he remembered the day Bua Maa had died, it was never so clear. The images had blurred over the years, even though Tamanna's memory was only 4 years old. He didn't remember everything that had happened then. But, the night of the shootout was still a clear, perfect memory in his mind. And he always woke up when Riddhima was hit with the bullet, screaming Basket at the top of his lungs. Even all these years of therapy had been unsuccessful of ridding him from these.
He sighed and made his way out of the room, knowing that sleep was out of the question now. He could have had another sleeping pill, but he'd taken his recommended dosage when he'd gone to sleep earlier and he didn't want to overdo it. If Tamanna found out that he'd had sleeping pills not once but twice in one night, she'd skin him alive. He knew Tamanna hated that he relied on those damn pills to put him to sleep every night and he didn't particularly like depending on them himself, but just couldn't go to sleep on his own. When he'd tried for a few days, he'd become a walking zombie due to lack of sleep within 4 days. After that, he never went without.
He sighed. Leaving Riddhima alone had come with a hefty price. One he was still paying all these years later in the form of his health. The panic attacks started again, he started having trouble sleeping, the pesky nightmares kept him awake at night. All this since he'd left Mumbai and Riddhima behind. At least he was alive and breathing, he quipped to himself. And, he had an amazing family - Jaan, Tammy and Rahul. And of course, his extended family - Ma, Dad, Rohan, Shailee Di, Jiju & Vedika. He wouldn't have found them if he hadn't come here. He wouldn't have found Jaan again. And, he wouldn't have ever thought of coming here if he'd never left Riddhima behind. So, he owed her a thank you, Armaan supposed. It was because of her and her choices that he'd left Mumbai, come to New York and found Jaan. Found his life. This amazing, beautiful life, full of loving, caring and the most supportive people he could ever dream of.
As always, he needed the reassurance that Riddhima was okay. It was his thing. Whenever he woke up from a nightmare, he would always need to make sure that the person it was about was safe and sound. Not in any danger. When he'd dream about the shootout, he'd stay awake for hours later, unable to make sure that Riddhima was still fine. He'd play with his phone, twisting it in his palm, wanting to dial Riddhima's number to make sure she was fine. He'd even punched the number into his phone a couple of times, the digits committed to his memory forever, but hadn't been able to muster the courage to actually press the dial button. It was nights like these that were the hardest. He'd spend hours roaming about the house, willing himself to believe that Riddhima was okay, that she was fine. Looking at the time, he'd think about what she might be doing. Maybe she'd be at Sanjeevani, on rounds or performing a surgery. Maybe she was out on a lunch date with Sid. Maybe she was visiting her parents. He would remember her face - happy and so in love with him and smile. But, that had been ages ago. She hadn't been the same when he'd left. The smile had left her eyes and she walked hunched, as if she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders. Many a time, he'd wanted to just pull her in a tight hug and tell her that it would all be okay and he would always be there for her, even if it was just a friend. He hadn't ever been able to do so. Today, he remembered the last time they'd talked in vivid detail. Her tears as she finally let him go, the forced smile on her face in an attempt to reassure him she was fine when they both knew she wasn't, and her promise to try and make a happy life.
He needed to see her. To make sure she was fine, he decided. Quietly, he made his way to the guest room he knew she was sharing with Muskaan and Nikki. Anjali had wanted to stay with Atul, owing to the pregnancy. So, the other three girls were sharing a room, owing to the fact that Armaan didn't have enough guest rooms to accommodate all couples separately.
He opened the door stealthily and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw her there, sleeping wrapped snuggly in a blanket, a small frown on her face. He didn't even realize when he was actually inside the room and walking towards her. He sat on the bed, mindful to not disturb her sleep. He knew it was wrong but he couldn't help admire her. She was just as beautiful as she'd been all those years ago. He reached his hand out tentatively and caressed her face, putting a stray lock of her hair behind her ear. Riddhima smiled in her sleep, as if she could sense his touch. This action soothed the ache in his chest and he felt his heart stitch itself back up, just a little. She still recognized his touch, he thought in amazement.
Then, remembering his promise to himself and the fact that was married and would be leaving soon, he recoiled. His hand left her face as if it was burning. He couldn't stand to be in her presence for a single second. His throat felt tight and his chest hurt and it was too much. So, he stood up and made his way out of the room in quick, sure steps, eager to get away from her, from the memories, the pain.
He closed the door behind him and sat down on the floor, leaning against the door. He let out a huge breath and tried to calm his thrumming heart. He already knew how this song and dance with Riddhima ended. It always ended up with him nursing a broken heart as Riddhima stomped all over it, not caring one bit about his feelings. He'd put her first every time. But not anymore. Now, Armaan lived for his happiness. Not hers. And he'd be damned if he let her have it again. He shook his head and got up, determination shining in his eyes as he forced himself to remember all the pain Riddhima had caused him over the years. He wouldn't give her the power to hurt him so much again. Never.
Armaan made his way downstairs and into the kitchen. He might as well treat himself to a cup of coffee now that he was awake. He was surprised to see Tamanna there already. She was dressed in her staple worn sweats and a tee shirt that was too large for her. When he looked carefully, he realized that it was actually his jersey from the track team back in college, the name Mallik emblazoned on it above the number Ten. He smiled at the familiarity of it. This day had been full of surprises and he felt at peace, looking at Tamanna, standing there, making herself something as she stood in his jersey that she'd stolen from him God knows when. It gave him the assurance that not everything in his life had changed. He remembered countless nights spent with Tamanna like this - both of them unable to sleep, trying to chase away their demons and finding a but of solace with each other.
"Hey, he whispered lightly, but he still managed to startle her.
"Hey, she greeted back. "Nightmare? She asked. Armaan nodded. She knew better than to ask what it was about.
"Want me to make you coffee? She questioned.
"Please, Armaan replied earnestly. She smiled at him and got to work.
Once the coffee was brewed, she gave a cup to Armaan and took one for herself. She then took Armaan's hand in hers and guided him to the dining table just outside the kitchen.
The two of them sat down and drank their coffee silently, not speaking and enjoying the silence. This is what Armaan liked about Tamanna. She didn't think it was necessary to fill their silences with nonsense chatter. She enjoyed it just as much as he did.
"How was the conference? Armaan asked sometime later.
Tamanna smiled. She launched into a detailed account of how the conference had been, the people she'd met, the things she'd learnt - her eyes alight with happiness, a huge smile on her face. Armaan grinned looking at her. He was so proud of her and all she'd achieved.
When she was done telling him about it, she asked her own questions.
"How are you? She asked. But before Armaan could reply, she continued. "And, please. Don't bother with the I'm okay or I'm fine crap because we both know you aren't. Something is troubling you, Armaan. Please tell me. I know it's not about Jaanhavi cause she's home, safe and sound. And you've dealt with the Sanjeevani mess already. Don't look at me like that, Rohan told me. So, yes. I know. What's wrong? She asked.
Armaan sighed. Tamanna was getting really good at reading him. He wasn't sure if he liked it or not. She knew when he needed something, but it also meant that she knew when to push and make him talk about things he'd rather avoid.
"I've got all night, Tamanna said when Armaan didn't speak for sometime.
"It's just... I wasn't expecting to see all of them, so suddenly. It's been 7 years. It got me really riled up, Armaan relented. And it had. It shook him so much. Yes, he was happy to see all of them, even Riddhima. But, he hadn't expected it and it had thrown him for a loop to see them all standing there in the hospital. He was scrambling for air ever since. Yes, he loved them. They'd been his family at some point. But, they were also his past, a past he'd been trying to avoid for as long as he could remember.
"I know what you mean, Tamanna replied. She'd been shocked too. Seeing Sid had brought up all the old memories she'd been trying to suppress and it had been difficult for her to formulate her thoughts. Tamanna had always considered Sid to be one of her closest friends and maybe even loved at some point. Leaving him behind had probably been one of the toughest decisions she'd ever made, but her father had liked him and she wanted to fulfil all his dreams. She shook her head, leaving those memories behind. It was of no use now.
"You okay? Armaan asked her. Tamanna nodded.
"Seeing them threw me for a loop too, Tamanna admitted. "I haven't seen Sid since I left with him and it just brought back a lot of memories.
"Oh, Tammy! Armaan cried, pulling her in for a tight hug. "You've got this, babygirl. I'm here for you, he promised. "You're never going to be alone. Ever.
Tamanna hugged him back just as tight and willed herself to draw strength from Armaan's embrace. He was right. She wasn't going to be alone again.
"I'm okay, I promise, she said after a few minutes.
Armaan let go off her reluctantly and sat back on the chair.
"Is that all? Tamanna asked him.
Armaan sighed. There was more, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to burden Tamanna with all that.
"Come on, A. You can tell me. You know that. Get it off your chest, Tamanna pried.
"I had a meeting with Peyton yesterday. That's the reason I wasn't with Jaan when she got into that accident, Armaan admitted.
"And? What happened at the meeting? Tamanna asked worried. Armaan loved seeing Peyton. He would always sport a huge smile after their meetings. Of all of them, Peyton was the only one who truly got him. Especially his music. So, he was always eager to spend time with him. Fretting over a business meeting with Peyton meant something huge had happened.
"Pressure's increasing, Armaan admitted. "Everyone and their brother wants to know who Reve is. Peyton doesn't think it'll hold for long. Something is bound to happen.
"Armaan, you can't hide behind Reve forever. We knew that someday people will find out, Tamanna said, trying to soothe him.
"I'm not ready, Tammy. People can't know! That's not why I created Reve all those years ago. If I wanted people to know it was me who was singing, I'd have used my own damn name! He burst.
Five Years Ago. Red Bedroom Records, New York.
"Gosh, Armaan! This is so good! Peyton exclaimed as she listened to one of the new songs Armaan had recorded.
Armaan smiled. "You think so? He asked.
"This is so good! I don't really understand why you won't just start recording professionally! You'd do so good, AM. You've got it all. You'll become a household name in no time, Peyton insisted.
"Not this again, Armaan sighed. Peyton was always bugging him about becoming a professional singer. Yes, he knew he was good, but he didn't want this.
"Please, Peyton begged.
"I'm late, Armaan answered. "I'll see you later. Saying so, Armaan walked out of the studio.
He drove home. He wanted to see Jaan.
"Hey, he greeted her as he opened the door. She was sprawled on the sofa watching some stupid as f**k CW Drama where everyone slept with everyone.
"Shhh, she replied. "Nate and Serena just broke up. Again.
Armaan rolled his eyes. He didn't bloody care if Nate killed Serena. He needed her right now. He plopped down on the couch and shut the TV.
"Hey! Jaanhavi cried. "I was watching that! She cribbed.
"Jaan, Armaan whispered, his voice lost. His tone made her sit up instantly.
"What happened? She asked him.
"I was with Peyton, he answered. "She was bugging me about recording again.
"Armaan! Jaanhavi sighed exasperatedly. She didn't know why Armaan wouldn't just f**king record.
"Why don't you listen to her? She asked. "You're so good, Malakh. Peyton is right. You shouldn't let it go waste.
"Not you too! Armaan exclaimed.
"What is the problem? I really don't understand, she whined.
"There's no problem. I just don't want it, he answered. "That life is not for me. Not anymore.
"Malakh! That's not true! It's for you. It's always for you. Is this about mom? She asked.
When Armaan didn't reply, she continued. "Cause if it is, it's a stupid reason! Of all the people in the world, mom was the one who wanted it the most for you. It was her dream too. Do it. If not for yourself, for her. Please, she pleaded.
"It's not about Bua Maa, Armaan replied finally.
"Then what is it? Jaanhavi asked annoyed.
"Cause I want to protect you! All of you! Armaan burst out finally.
"What does that mean? Jaanhavi asked in a whisper. She was shocked at what Armaan had said.
Armaan sighed. "Nothing. Just forget it. He tried to leave, but Jaanhavi held his hand.
"No, she said, her voice taut and firm. "Tell me what you meant by protecting me.
"It's nothing. Really. Just let it go, Armaan pleaded.
"Armaan Mallik if you ever loved me for even one second in your life, you will tell me everything, she demanded.
Armaan paled on hearing that.
"Please, Jaanhavi pleaded. "What is it?
He didn't have a way out now, he knew. Jaanhavi wouldn't rest easy till she knew what he meant. And frankly, he was tired of carrying it all inside him. He needed to tell someone.
"It's just... Armaan paused, searching for the right words. "Okay. You know how public all these celeb lives are, right? Everyday, some or the other tabloid has to say something about them, even when they're taking a bloody walk around a park.
"Yes, Jaanhavi replied. "I know. What's that got to do with anything?
"Don't you see? If I start recording officially, put albums out, I'll be on the face of the industry. Right now, I'm behind the scenes. That's cool. No one cares if I live or die. But, once I'm a public figure, people will know if I sneeze. All of my privacy, all your privacy, out the door, Armaan replied.
"That's it?!?!? Jaanhavi cried. "That's the stupidest thing ever!
"That's not all, Armaan said.
"What is it then? Jaanhavi probed.
"What if they dig into my past? What if they dig into yours? Or Rahul's? You know how they sell these papers. These paps, they're relentless. They don't stop at anything. And I can't bear to see my past for the world to see. Or yours. There's a lot of red ink there. And people will just judge you and me and Rahul and anybody else related to me. I don't want that! Armaan cried.
"Dada! It's okay! Jaanhavi whispered. She took him in a tight hug and whispered words of comfort, trying to soothe him.
It was then that Rahul entered the house. It was a regular occurrence around the house for Armaan and Jaanhavi to hug each other for the stupidest things so he didn't give it much thought, but then when he saw the tears in Armaan's eyes, he couldn't help himself. He joined in the hug silently and lent his support to Armaan, telling him he was there, no matter what.
"Armaan. It's going to be fine, Tamanna told him, pulling him out of his memory. Armaan nodded wordlessly.
"I'll get us something to eat, Tamanna announced, moving away. She knew Armaan needed sometime to himself, now that he'd told her.
Armaan smiled at her in thanks and nodded. Tamanna knew him so well. He was still thinking about that day when he'd told Jaan and Rahul had come in.
Rahul had been the one to come up with the solution. He'd suggested a stage name. A name behind which Armaan hid. A name which had no face.
Reve. It meant dream in French. Dream. It was a multi faceted name. Armaan meant dream. Being a singer was Armaan's dream. It was stealthy and accurate. Rahul had been the one to suggest it too.
So, Armaan had taken Rahul's advice and built Reve. He'd hidden behind the name. And, he'd gotten the best of both worlds. He got to sing and he was free from the public scrutiny that came with being such a huge star. Yes, it was a little Miley Cyrus - y, but it was his life and he loved it. He wasn't about to let it all go.
"It will be fine, Tamanna said again, as she sat at the table with two plates of cake. They were never out of cake. It was the house policy. Armaan was an excellent baker and everyone loved everything he made. So, he always kept the house stocked with some dessert or the other. Cheesecakes and pies were the favourite, but he made souffle and jelly and brownies and whatnot to keep their bellies full.
"I'm scared, Armaan admitted.
"Don't worry. Whatever happens, we got this. We're here and we're together. We can handle anything as long as we're together. Right? She asked.
Armaan nodded. "Ohana, he whispered, as was tradition in their little dysfunctional family. A prayer to remind the other that they were family, that they were together.
"Ohana, Tamanna replied, holding one of Armaan's hands tightly in her own.
"Read to me? Armaan asked when they were done eating.
Tamanna nodded her ascent. They moved to the living room and Tamanna sat down on the sofa. Armaan handed her his favourite book which was kept on the side table. He laid down on the sofa, with his head in Tamanna's lap. She ran her fingers through his hair in a calming gesture and began reading.
Armaan smiled and closed his eyes. Tamanna's soft and soothing voice filled the air around him and he forgot about Riddhima and Peyton and Red Bedroom and Reve. In that moment, he was just Armaan and she was Tamanna and he was flying.
xxx
There you have it! So much AR in this. I know its angsty and sad and not what you want but it'll get better. I promise.
I hope you find the reasons for Armaan becoming Reve satisfactory. He knows ki uski aur uske family/friends ki life mein aisa bohot kuch hua hai jo woh nahi chahta ki sabko pata chale kyuki agar woh saari baatein sabko pata chali toh sabki bohot zyada insult hogi. People may found out about Jaanhavi running away, Rahul's problem, Tamanna's issues, his own breakup. Woh nahi chahta sabko woh sab pata chale. Isliye usne yeh sab kiya hai.
And, I hope ki you liked this chapter! More of Armaan and Tamanna's bonding shown! I like these two kiddos! They're so cute!
Anywho, please comment!
Love,
Prags XOXO
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face, it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice, it chased away all the sanity in me
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
All of me... me... me...
