We all have men like appa and Bala around us no?
Even more.. We all live in such families...
Bala here trying to maintain balance with all the people and relations and Vandu trying hard to compensate. If not for old parents, Bala would have paid heed to Vandu? Only time will tell.
His little chatter about family trips which he is unable to pay for now.. Or an ice cream in the past... Shows us only how our parents might have managed and pulled it off so far!
Appa being egalitarian with his motto of troubling the ones who trouble his daughters is hilarious.
Amma's joy seems to be short lived for now.. Am sure he will see more in the future owing to her grandkid.
II being ignorant of this whole thing... Maybe cause she was moving around the whole house and the kids sleeping peavefuly are some delights!

A very regular middle class living room discussion shown live!!

Hats off Nish!

<font face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif" size="3">How subtly you have shown the difference between a middle class family and an iyer one at that and that of a well-to-do one. In the same place, II as a new mother would not have been allowed to even step out of her bed. Appa will see the difference when II has her baby.

It is no one's fault essentially that Akka has to rough it out in life. She is not unhappy but too rattled by the mundane problems that they cannot help. There are several times when I have dropped some idea because I have to be at home with parents. It does not make me a bad person. Perhaps a priority at that moment. Bala too, perhaps. It was not wise of him to say I want to be home today maybe. But perhaps his thought process is that Vandu is cared for here, but there my parents may need one young help at least. Vandu is not wrong, neither is Bala. As a care giver, sometimes, you tend to worry much more than is warranted. Perhaps Bala is a wimp too. Who knows.

As a reader, I see the clear distinction between real and dream here. R&B and II are the dream. Everyone else is part of the real that keeps walking into the dream and the dream keeps walking into their lives. When this happens, we see what is real and what is the dream and how the dream gets busted to see the real. It is indeed nice. To see the dream and the real walk side by side.

(this is what happens when I review. harikathai maadiri...)

On the contrary, I say EnVee,wish u write more , I love everything you post.

Thanks Kalpana. Just that I most often choose to just enjoy the story and its flow. Azhagana kadhaiya rasichi rusichi padichi... tooongidanum. Nalla kanavu varum. Aaraichi pannina questions daan varum 😆

(a good story should be tasted and savoured. you should just go to sleep after that. you will get good dreams. if you research too much into it, you will have only several questions.)😆

Last eve, while I was yapping with some of you, hubs calls, checks with me if there is enough dinner at home to bring home his colleague whose wife has gone to india with their kids.It was a little late already.
Anyway did not hv to rustle much, just made a salad . I said to my hubs, why do you do this, cribbing you take me too much for granted,Was planning to go to bed early So hubs says, the poor guy is missing family and home food. I laughed to myself wondering in which order , food first? And then family.
Anyway, that little frustration that creeped in cos of a long day for multiple reasons went away when the guy was so genuine in his appreciation for the simple dinner he got at our place.Kept them company till I was too tired, said my goodnight and crashed.
Caught up on the updates now.
I hv this all knowing smile thinking these men!!
Men like Appa and Bala bound by t duty and respect ,find it easier to take their wives for granted.
While they appreciate their wives for the women they are, love them enough but they fall short when they have to take a stand for them when they are pitted against their elders. Tight finances adds to the woes. There are only more men like Appa and Bala and I identify with these men cos my Appa was like one of these men.
Wasn't the situation hilarious in 'Egalitarian Appa' when Appa complained about the newborn keeping his daughter awake and R&B turning, giving Appa a look, the voice over "Mr Iyer was democratic that way... he detested any man that troubled his daughters" he thought, sitting down by his wife... holding baldie"
Egalitarian Appa, awesome title that and awesome writing like always.

Good day and good evening folks

Hi kalpana
A great personal example you have put forth to explain the characters of the story

It's simple...let it be men or women
The notion of taking for granted comes with how close a person is to you
And wife and hubbs are assumed more than best friends
Appa and bala are characters sketched out of the traditional examples of men
They are still in the age where being exoressive of your appreciation towards your wife was not looked at as a necessity
They had things like CURRENT BILLS and HOUSE RENTS to deal with in that appreciating your wife was like a task they could put away for later

But I think as time is progressing ppl demand recognition and demand to be thanked and they are absolutely right in thier outlook
When men and women stand on sort of equal pedestals a women who puts an extra effort must be thanked and appreciated

Same works the other way too
If a hubby puts efforts one must defiantly thank and appreciate in today's world

I thinkbappa and bala need to meet the new world yet
But they arnt bad men either...they still love thier wives and respect them

Great review 😊

YOU CANT EXPLAIN WHY YOU LIKE SOMETHING.
BUT IF YOU ARE TRYING TO EXPLAIN IT DOESNT MEAN YOU ARE LIKING IT BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT FEELING IT.

FEELINGS CAN'T BE EXPLAINED
