Part 8
Naina was teary eyed. She immediately made Rajveer stand and whispered in his years.
Naina: I will
Rajveer hugged Naina - with a passion, intensity and hunger that she had never witnessed before.
Rajveer: We'll speak to Uncle and Aunty in the evening.
Naina: Raj.. umm... let me speak to them first...
Raj: You are scared that they'll say something that'll hurt me? Don't worry. If I can fight my own inner demons, other people's questions are no problem.
In the evening Raj and Naina waited eagerly for Naina's parents. Naina told them that she was ready to get married.
NM: That's amazing news. We'll just call Abhi's parents..
Naina: I don't want to marry Abhi.
Her parents were shocked.
Raj took Naina's hands in his.
Raj: Uncle and Aunty, Naina and I love each other and we want to get married.
Their faces hardened.
NF: Naina can we speak to you in private.
Raj: Uncle, please I'd prefer if you discuss everything with me.
NF: Fine beta. I don't know where to start. You know that we have the highest gratitude for you - for what you did for our son. But Naina is our only daughter.
NM: And we have to look out for her best interest.
Naina: Marrying Raj is in my best interest.
NM: Naina don't be stupid. Raj, forgive me for my bluntness. You don't have a family. Your hand is paralyzed. No one knows how your future will shape up. How can we marry our only daughter to you.
Naina was infuriated. But Raj gripped her hadn and calmed her down.
RAJ:
You are right. I am an orphan. i have never had a family of my own outside the army. But that gives me an increased motivation to make a family with Naina. To be a loving husband and in the future a caring father to our children
My arm is paralyzed and I still need a stick to walk long distances. But I am determined to recover. To start over. To be the best for Naina.
Most of all, I love your daughter. More than anything else in the world.
I want to marry her and I promise to keep her happy always.
We just want your blessings.
NF: Raj we need some time. This is too much for us to process.
NAINA: Ma, Papa, I have just one more thing to add. It could have been Naveen Bhaiya instead of Raj. What if he had come back to us, physically hurt and needing our support to start over. Would you have had the same judgemental attitude towards him?
Naina's parents thought for a few days. On the last day of Raj and Naina's visit they called them to discuss their decision.
NM: Raj, forgive us. We were being extremely selfish and short-sighted.
NF: You are worthy of our daughter in every way. If anything, we are privikeged to have a courgeous and honrable man like you as our son-in-law.
NM: Welcome to the family son!
They hugged Raj and Naina and gave them their blessings. They wanted them to seal their relation by exchanging rings.
NM: i wish Naveen was here today. He would have been over the moon seeing his darling sister getting engaged to his best friend.
RAJ: Aunty, I can never make up for Naveen's absence. But from this day forward i promise to be your son - in every possible way.
NM: We know Raj. For starters you should start calling us Ma and Baba.
It was decided that Naina and Raj would get married 1 months from now.
Naina and RAJ went back - Naina to Pathankot and Raj to the rehabilitation centre. Raj had his arms around Naina's throughout the journey to Pathankot
He insisted on dropping her off at his quarters. When it was time to leave, Raj looked at NAINA intently.
Raj: One more month... and then we'll be together forever.
Naina: I can't wait for this time to get over.
She hugged him tightly.
A week later, Abhimanyu was visiting the Pathankot Cantonment. He was surprised to hear that Raj and Naina had gotten engaged. He was concerned to hear that they were getting married in less than a month.
Abhimanyu: i know it'll be very easy for you to misconstrue my words given i have confessed my love for you in the past. But trust me I am just concerned about you.
Raj is still recovering from his post-traumatic stress. He still has flashes of manic anger. It;s not advisable for you to get married to him right now.
Naina: Abhi I apprecite your concern. But if I had my way, I'd marry him today. I want to help him recover. I want to stand by him always.
Abhi: I wish you the very best. I hope that your optiism trumps my fears. All the best
