Chapter 1
Kriya grabbed a bottle of beer from the refrigerator and sat on the couch as she continued speaking on the phone.
-What? No Mamma
- No I'm not a victim of sexual harassment at workplace. Thanks for asking...
-What? My editor is a woman Maa...
-Yeah, but that doesn't make her any less evil...
-Yes Mamma, khana kha liya maine...
-Rajma-chawal...
-Kya?
-Subah chale jana...
-What do you mean? Jeez maa it's an ATM counter not kirana ki dukaan ki 10 baje khulegi nahin...
-Yeah...
-Yeah it's 24 hours...
-Gosh!
The doorbell rings.
-Okay maa I think Swayam's home. I'll hang up now...
-What? Stop it Mamma. Bye. Love you...
-No I didn't get a tattoo in any inappropriate place. Not yet. Bye.
She hangs up and goes to open the door.
Swayam enters and drops on the couch snatching the beer from Kriya.
"And... wassup? How was work?" asks Kriya.
"Usual," replies Swayam, taking a sip.
"Which means Karan Malik is still riding your ass... Nice."
"He's the director. He's allowed," said Swayam making a grumpy face.
"Which means its Sharon Raiprakash again... what did she do this time? Made you polish her shoes or wax her legs? What?" Kriya quizzically looked.
"Nope. And that would be gross." Swayam took another sip and sighed. After a pause of exactly 15 seconds he spoke again. "She made me apologise to her cat in front of the whole unit. Can you believe it? I had to like say a whole formal apology to a f**king cat! Apparently I stepped on its... his tail. Bitch!"
"You can't call a cat bitch."
"Wasn't for the cat."
"Oh, well... Why does she bring a cat to shoot?"
"She didn't. Her mother did. Apparently the cat is going into depression because it's missing Sharon."
"Do you think I can do a story on it? The Diva and her feline companion..."
"Absolutely not." Swayam interrupts Kriya. "Aren't you ashamed? With a degree in literature, this is what you are wasting your life on? Sharon Raiprakash and her cat!!"
"With a degree in filmmaking, three documentaries and two short films in your kitty, all you do is blow Sharon Raiprakash's hair while your director utters obscenities at you," snapped Kriya.
"You're right. Our jobs suck, but mine sucks more." Swayam sighed and gulped down the rest of the beer.
"So is she like, a member of PETA?" asked Kriya.
"You're not getting any fodder for your stupid tabloid article from me. Get it?"
"Okay!"
Kriya goes to fetch herself another beer.
"By the way your mother had called me to ask if I had a kundali, I told her it's at home in Calcutta but do you have any idea what's this about?" shouted Swayam.
"Please ignore her. Her only aspiration is to see me with a husband," replied Kriya from the kitchen.
"Oh. Cool."
Kriya returned with a whole crate of beer.
"Look Swayam, tomorrow is my day off so Imma get wasted tonight. In case I pass out on the couch put me on the bed cuz my back really hurts. Also don't try to wake me up for coffee in the morning cuz I might just kill you. Got it?"
"Right."
"What's the call time tomorrow?" asked Kriya.
"9 o'clock sharp."
"Good luck with that."
Kriya hopped on the couch and turned the TV on while Swayam proceeded towards his bedroom.
