Chapter 12

1

"Mr. Singhania, you can come in," the nurse said to Rey. Inside, it was clean, cool and well furnished with white linen and white curtains, his dad was dressed in white too. Rey wished for a little more colour as living with so much white around on a daily basis could be depressing. It had become the colour of the sick.

"I'd now leave the two of you alone," the nurse blushed looking at Rey and left.

Vikram Singhania sat on a wooden armchair with a book on his lap- No one Writes to the Colonel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. There were newspapers and magazines on the table. Rey was happy that although on his sick bed, his father was rediscovering his habit of reading. Vikram Singhania could not emote or speak, a powerful stroke almost two years ago followed by the massive loss incurred by his production house had taken away his articulation skills. The left side of his body was paralysed and the doctors suspected an onset of Alzheimer's too. But he was still capable of hearing, reading and comprehending. And on some of his better days, he attempted at smiling too, sometimes. Vikramaditya Singhania, the demigod of Indian cinema and once the heartthrob of million women was officially retired now.

"Hey dad, what's up?" Rey affectionately placed a kiss on his father's forehead praying it wasn't one of those days when he wouldn't recognize him. "I see you're reading. Nice."

He looked up and after staring at Rey, blankly for 10 seconds, he seemed to relax. Rey couldn't be too sure if he recognized him, but at least he had his attention. In the last two years Rey and his father had developed a bond that didn't exist in the previous 23 years, when his father was healthy. Though they used to interact like any other father and son, Rey did most of the listening then. The previous two years changed that- his father listened to him. It felt nice to finally talk to his dad, getting his dad to hear him out, after waiting for 23 long years. Rey didn't know if his dad liked it, considering he didn't have a say on it, but Rey believed that he liked it. He particularly enjoyed the conversations regarding their trips to Panchgani- when they were a happy lot and their family had been complete. Rey had noticed his faint smile.

"Room smells good," Rey smiled. He knew he had to do the talking as there wouldn't be any kind of response from the other end. He was used to it.

"So dad, you know... there's this girl, she's a reporter, the same one who wrote all that crap about me and Sharon, well... I'm going out with her tonight. She's real fun to be with."

Rey paused looking at his dad. His expression remained unchanged.

"Well it's not a date date, it's scheduled as an interview. And yeah, before you conclude anything, no I'm not sleeping with her. This is not to say that I won't, but... You're getting it right? She's really smart you know, and confident and sexy. And..." Rey stopped speaking as his dad's eyes were trying to convey something. They were anxious.

"Dad, if you're worrying about Sharon, then don't. She knows, and she approves. Actually there's something I haven't told you. Umm... Sharon and I have ended it. It's been almost a year. It was a mess! Will tell you some other time, maybe when you get better. As of now, it's just between the two of us, we haven't told Gautam uncle anything. It's a mutual thing... Dad she's a good girl and she deserves better, in fact she deserves the best and not some compromise. I know you're disappointed, but it was never gonna work out between us. I love her and she loves me, but we're not made for each other." Rey sighed and paused. His father's eyes were glassy.

Rey wanted to assume that his father was happy for him. That's what parents do right? They find happiness in their children's happiness. Well, not always. But Rey wanted his father to be happy. He wanted him to trust his instincts. May be Rey was being self-centred, he was asserting his decisions, but it was supposed to be his decision all along.

"Dad, I will handle things, just trust me... have faith in me. I will make everything alright. I promise."

Vikram Singhania stared at the white curtains. Rey wasn't sure if he was listening anymore. The nurse returned.

"It's time for him to sleep," she said.

"Okay. Sure." Rey took the frail, now shrunken man of 6 feet 3 in his arms and carefully placed him on the bed. He kissed his father on the cheeks as the man stared at the walls with an empty look.

"See you soon dad. Take care."

Rey stepped out.

"Haan haan bhaiya idhar rok do bas," Kriya gestured the auto walah to stop at the entrance of the lavish continental eatery in South Mumbai, that fancily introduced itself as a bistro. A valet immediately approached her, and ushered her inside.

The interior was lit with lamps resembling colonial era street lamps, reflecting a dim, pleasant yellowish light. Rey sat in a corner table, dressed in a faded brown leather jacket, with a smile. He stood up as soon as Kriya came near the table. Kriya felt awfully underdressed for the occasion although she had made sure she takes off those pants, yet... Nonetheless, she managed to maintain her smile as she approached the man. All this was unfolding in a rather dramatic manner and Kriya was nervous as hell. It wasn't supposed to be like this, in her head, she had imagined this meeting n number of times, and it was nothing like this. This was more like a... a date.

Rey smiled and pulled the chair for her as she approached the table. Her heart fluttered a little but she put a harness on it and carried on.

"Hi," he said.

"Hey... it's a nice place, I must say," said Kriya as she sat down.

"I was going for the Thai place but then you said you love Italian, and this place has the best Italian, mark my words," said Rey with his usual half smile.

"Looks nice, wonder why there's nobody here," said Kriya looking around. "Unusually humdrum for a place like this..."

"That's because... nobody else is allowed an entrance here, tonight."

Kriya was confused. "I didn't get that."

"You know... I thought we could do with some quiet time, especially if you're gonna bombard me with those questions of yours, I'd need some peace and a drink and no autographs to be signed. So, I just booked the whole place."

"You... booked the whole place, as in this whole, bistro? Wow... Rey Singhania, you do live life king size eh?" Kriya was surprised- she didn't know if she really welcomed the idea of being alone with Rey the whole evening but right now she could feel flattered for a while.

"Well, that's what I hear about me," said Rey with his usual coolness. "So let's begin with placing the order?"

Rey gestured for the waiter.

Kriya ordered a broccoli and cream of mushroom soup with garlic bread and a salad while Rey ordered the classic penne pasta cooked in white sauce.

"Single malt large and wine for the lady," he ordered the drinks.

"Ahh... make that two. I don't want wine," Kriya interrupted.

The waiter left after jotting it all down.

"I'm sorry I should've asked you, my apologies," said Rey.

"That's okay. But I wonder, what made you order wine? Because I'm a girl, and all girls drink wine?" Kriya wanted to tone down her sarcasm but it didn't quite come out right.

Rey was taken aback. He laughed.

"Well yeah I guess that thought was there, and I also remember you being the only lady who sat at the bar for a long time sipping wine. So I assumed you must be one of them."

"Ah! That party! What a torture that one was!" Kriya exclaimed.

"Especially with me coming over and imposing myself so brazenly," Rey grinned.

"Actually that was the only moment of comic relief I had that night," she smiled. "But you taking off your mask, was the high drama, and that's when everything started going totally wrong."

"I could've taken it off in the room like I had suggested, but you wanted otherwise," he said naughtily. Kriya's eyes were beginning to grow large, but he assured her with his hands up in the air, "I kid, I kid."

The waiter placed the drinks.

"I was surprised that you recognized me at the press conference. I didn't think you would," said Kriya taking a sip.

"Err... I didn't actually," confessed Rey with a guilty face.

"Wha... but you said you did. You spoke to me!"

"Yeah, that's cuz you were the only good looking female among all the boring reporters. So I thought I could take my chances," he grinned again.

"What?? You can do that? I mean it was a press meet where you were defending your girlfriend!"

Rey gasped at the word 'girlfriend'. But it wasn't the right time to say it all. He didn't need to.

"I like to remain prepared all the time. You never know when you hit the jackpot. And my girlfriend is very understanding, believe me. But please do not write all of this in your paper, I already have the media of the entire country branding me as a playboy'. Now I don't want people to know that I hit on reporters at press conferences too." He laughed.

Kriya nodded like an obedient child. This was too much information for her to process.

"So... was I... the jackpot here?" She spoke in disbelief, and regretted letting it out as soon as she said it.

Rey's expression changed. He inched closer to her and spoke in a hushed tone.

"I think I made it obvious that night, at the party," he said.

Wow!

Rey Singhania was hitting on her. Again! Why was she surprised? She knowingly brought it upon herself this time.

Kriya choked as she struggled to find an apt wisecrack to retort. Not a lot of people could render her speechless. Was she supposed to detest this man, who sang praises of his machismo with a cool indifference and took an obvious advantage of his position while being the most modest person in the room all the time, or be intimidated by the formidable presence that Reyaansh Singhania was?

"Kriya!" Rey broke the silence that was getting tense with each passing moment.

"You need to loosen up. Relax! Have the drink."

Kriya pursed her lips as she reached for her drink. Rey continued to observe her.

"You know why I like talking to you so much?" and he didn't wait for her to respond. "Because talking to you, is like this constant game of ping pong. You just hit and wait to be hit back. There's no stopping it."

Kriya gaped at him. He was looking at her with the kind of intensity that a lover has for his love, and a hunter for his prey- that kind of predatory gaze that could fire up your loins or send a chill into your bones.

Oh damn the whisky!

The waiter returned with the food.

COME ON!!!!!!!!

there has to be something more... the chapter just cannot end like this...

this is cruel...

and brutal...

and I am crying... my heart is broken...

I mean see... when I read the other chapters... no offence... when they finish... and I reread them... many times... I am satisified terming it as a chapter...

and now... it waa like whoosshhh... when it got over I never knew...

I think so it has to do with ... ummm... leave it...

see I absolutely loved the start... I mean so sweet and natural...

it was amazing... the emotional touch was awesome..

and then the date cum IV... I mean that is awesome...

I have 2-3 possibilities of how it would end..

I loved rey's straightforward nature...

and I was thinking valet ushering her was weird and that's hwen I understood... khe khe...

it was awesome... I loved how he included sharon in his convos... shows hom much huge part she is in his life...

the quirkiness is just amazing... it is war of words... just loved it...

and this is topping my list of favorites...

hush... u never let my fav list remain untouched... sigh...

Okay so you had me gasping for breath after that date/interview which seemed so much more than a date!
Gasping as in not in the conventional sense but the intensity that this almost trivial seeming conversation held...
Well I loved how Rey said that talking to Kriya was like a game of ping pong!I believe you need to have that kind of rapport with a person to actually be interested in him for a lifetime!
This meet-date-interview was damn interesting and much better than I expected it to be!
And the amazing part is that its not over yet!
Waiting for the next part!Sure its gonna be fab!

And yeah! The hospital scenario between Rey and his dad just added another facet to his ever-so-surprising life! You just manage to make me fall in love with this guy more and more with every passing chappy!
He seems flawed but at the same time perfect!
Just an insanely interesting presence is what he would be in anybody's life!
I love this guy!

Update soon!Sure gonna be swooning over him a lot more after the next one! 😳

Firstly, sorry for the late reply.
Been busy with studies.
Now i read the previous two chapters together and they were outstanding.

Swaron conversation about 'I love you' was really interesting. It was actually quite different.
The bond that you showed between Rey and his father is impressive as well.
The previous 2 chapters were quite different and they definitely move the story ahead.

Quite eager to know what happens next.
Thanks a lot for the PM
Great work. Superb writing 👍🏼
PM me soon

PS. i'll try to read. 😳
