I groaned as we headed to another one of my families society parties. I didn't know any one here because I grew up in the states. We were just back for Christmas and everyday it was a party at someone's house. Today we were going to the Vadheras. I rang the doorbell as a tall guy around my age answered. "Namaste uncle aunty," he said looking at my parents. He looked at me and smiled leading me in. I sighed sitting down with my phone when I felt a hand come up to me, "can we be friends?," he asked holding out his hands. I stared at him, I barely even knew the guy, our parents were just extremely good family friends. I smiled back and nodded my head as I shook his hand. He instantly pulled me up, "why are you up here with all the oldies, you can hang out with us you know?" he said taking me to a room where is cousins were watching football. "By the way, I never introduced myself, my name is Virat" he said as he pulled up a chair for me to sit on. "Hi, I'm Viren, Virat's brother, and these are our cousins, Arnav, Armaan and Aditaya," his brother said smiling at me. I was feeling a little uncomfortable because it was just all guys. "Virenji, you are here, I was looking for you around the entire house," I turned around to see a girl around my age glaring at Viren. She smiled seeing me, "Manvi right? Hi, I am Jeevika. Ma told me about you, it's so nice you could come. I hope you are not too bored, I promise I will be back in a second, I just have a little touch to put on the dinner dishes and desert to make," she said sounding exhausted but understanding my dilemma. I smiled back at her, "can I come too, I can help?" I offered to which she just nodded her head. "So, Manvi, I heard you just came back from the states, can you speak hindi?" she asked as she starting cooking the eggplant. "Mummy papa ne kabhi mujhe ghar me English me baat nahi ki, toh I am pretty fluent in both." She smiled at me. "Jeevika didi, I can make desert you look tired. Do you think that kulfi would do for desert?" I asked. I didn't know how to cook much but I had learnt a couple of dishes from my mom, and I felt bad for her. Jeevika smiled slyly, "Kulfi would be perfect," she said still smiling. Once we were done making dinner, Jeevika got a page that she had to go in for nightshift at the hosptial. "Manvi, I am really sorry, I have to go now, here I will take you back to Virat and Virenji that way you can still hang out with the she said. Viren immediately offered to drop Jeevika off leaving me with Virat and his cousins. It was now dinner time. I walked over and helped Aunty with serving the food when I heard her gasp at the kulfi as she tasted some of it. "Did Jeevika make this Manvi?" she asked confused. I shook my head, "I did Aunty, I hope it turned out ok," I told her politely. She smiled at me, "bhout acha hai, Virat will be extremely happy," she said separating it into bowls. After a while all of their cousins left and it was just Viren and Virat in their room. Jeevika got out early so Viren had to go back and now it was just me and Virat. I was looking at my phone when he abruptly took it away from me, "facebook huh, can I add you as a friend," he asked? "sure" I answered back wanting him to give me back my phone. He chuckled realizing that I wanted it back, "I am not going to eat it Manvi. So, Mom told me you like painting a lot, can I see some of your work?" he asked. I asked him for my phone back and showed him the portrait that won me 1st place in the art show on campus last year. "That is so cool, so what else do you like?" he asked as he shifted on the couch signaling me to come sit by him. "singing and dancing," I replied. I had taken class since I was 6 years old. He chuckled, "you know that this reminds me of, that little girl on kuch kuch hota hai, "mujhe singing aur dancing ka bhoot shok hai," he said in a girly voice, "you probably haven't watched it though, its all in hindi," he said regretting what he said. I wanted to tell him I knew Hindi, but I just felt so self-conscious around him.
"Alright I am going to grab some more Kulfi, do you want some," he asked sensing that I was uncomfortable.
"Sure," I replied dreading his response to it
"mm bhabhi I love your cooking," he said hugging Jeevika di as she walked in. She giggled. "that's great devarji but I didn't make that," she said signaling towards me.
"cooking too, good lord, is there anything you are not good at," he asked.
"swimming," I replied honestly. "I never knew how to and I never want to know how to, it just looks so scary." I said remembering my fear of water. He giggled at me "you really are something, you think swimming is scary yet I remember my parents telling a story to me about someone picking up a snake with her bare hands," he said reminding me of something stupid I had done as a child. "They didn't," I closed my eyes in shame; my parents would share the most embarrassing stories of me. We were so engrossed in our conversation that we didn't even realize that Jeevika and Viren had left. We ended up talking for a while before he decided to play a game, "truth or dare and if the player couldn't do the dare he received a punishment from the other player." "So laides first, and I pick truth, I don't trust you enough yet for a dare, god knows what you would have me do," he said looking hysterically scared. "whats something you really regret?" I asked him seriously. "Well I have tried smoking and drinking before, it tastes horrible, I will never try it again" he said gagging. I smiled. "ok dare for me I guess since the guy here is too scared of me to try" I said chuckling at his response from earlier. "sing something in hindi, I would like to see you do that, growing up in the states you probably don't even understand hindi," he said smirking. "you really want to bet on this, you know what kind of punishments I could have you do right?" I said giggling. "its on, I would like to see you even try to do this dare," he said smirking even more. "hai hai re hai yeh ladka hai hai re hai, karta nadaniya kyun pucho toh hai." I sang joyfully giggling as I gave him thumbs down. "really, is there anything you don't know, tumhe hindi kaise aaya, you are really a secret to figure out" he asked utterly confused. I giggled at him, "or maybe you should stop doubting my abilities," I said shaking my head at him. Just as I was thinking of a punishment to give him my parents came by and told me we needed to leave. I smiled "thanks for keeping me entertained, this was a lot of fun, aaj tum bach gaye, nahi toh I was going to make you dance in someof bhabhi's sarees" I said holding my hand out to say bye as I laughed at our game. He gave me a quick side hug and I felt the blood rush to my cheeks. I was so immersed in the game that we played I hadn't noticed his strong build. He was extremely cute too. "Hey Manvi, you should come by sometime later, we can continue the game, I think you are here for all of winter break right?" he asked. I smiled when he said he wanted to see me again, I don't know why, it just made me feel special, "sure, ab dosti ki hai, nibhana to padega," I had giggling at him as he stood amazed by my hindi yet again. "Bye Manvi, sorry we didn't get to meet for long, come back again though ok," Jeevika said hugging me. Once I said bye to everyone, I started to leave when I saw Virat running out, "hey Manvi wait, I completely forgot, here's your phone back, I'm glad I took it from you though, it was fun getting to know you, you should really come by again, we can have some fun, maybe go out for lunch or dinner or something" he said dialing his number on my phone, "there its saved". I nodded my head, "sure I will text you so you have my number too," I said shyly as my parents smiled at our conversation. We finally left and I got changed when I heard a beep on my phone,
Virat: hey you still up, everyone's asleep here?
Manvi: yeah same here, so you're not tired?
Virat: no not really, I am so used to staying up from college that I never can fall asleep this early
Manvi: really, that's funny that's the same problem I have.
Virat: so what else should I know about you, singing dancing, cooking, you seem to be an all-rounder, I can see why my parents are so fond of you.
These texts continued as the two new friends got to know more and more of each other. They made each other happy. Friendship or love, this can't be judged this early but it was sure that they had a connection, a connection straight from the heart.
