Chapter 13 - Locking horns
A few months had passed since Saakshi had first talked to Aakash regarding the business deal with AR Designs. Since then, a whirlwind had descended upon Satyam Creations. The hard-working employees were surprised to See Saakshi there constantly, a rarity since she vocally left the running of the office to Abhi. Now, roles were reversed with Saakshi spending all her time at the office, and Abhi doing all the running around. And oh, how he ran around. From bank meetings, to visa offices, to travel agencies, to investors, designers, the whole nine yards, Abhi ran around like a headless chicken. While Saakshi yelled. And yelled some more. And occasionally threw things around the office or conference room, based on where ASR's voice would transmit through the airways. This was also a rare occurrence for those who had ever worked with Saakshi. She never yelled. Or threw things around. She never needed to. No-one had ever disputed her to such an extent that she had ever needed to yell. There was a frisson of excitement in the office amongst those who witnessed the changes in her methods of dealing. What, they wondered, could possibly cause Saakshi to lose her calm? The question however, was not what, but who.
At that moment, Saakshi was sitting in her cabin, muttering some choice words under her breath, as she glared at the phone in front of her. "I thought Satyam was the model of professionalism, and yet here we are, operating without the correct American licenses," Arnav's voice reverberated around the room. Saakshi's eyes narrowed as she registered the emphasis on the word American. "Mr. Riazada," she started with indignation. "Technically, we are not operating at all since you have not signed the merger documents, as amended according to YOUR requirements." She paused, as she FELT him smirking. "And as you are very well aware, this is not like India, where I can just bribe my way to a license, as I'm sure you must have done." Forget smirk, at that, he just full out chuckled, and she gaped at the phone, while Abhi looked at her with raised brows. "Now now, Ms. Tanwar. Let it not be known that you are working with those who get their work done through, ah, bribing. Such a crass word. I prefer to say that I have influence." Saakshi sat seething, at the edge of her chair. Abhi, looking at her, smothered a laugh. ASR really knew how to get under her skin. Saakshi, though, at that moment, was caught in a catch 22 situation. It was due to her initial goading that ASR had expedited processes at his end. And she, caught in the bureaucracy of international trade laws, could not do the same. "I wonder, if there's even any point in continuing on with our meeting at this moment, pointless as it seems," he continued, condescension dripping from every word. Gritting her teeth, she replied, "You have received the application submission documentation as well as all communication we have had since then. As soon as I hear more, I will let you know." With that, she hung up without another word. Abhi sat up straight in his chair, his eyes registering alarm. He had witnessed this scene enough times to know what was to come next. Right on cue, the phone started ringing. Saakshi looked at it and smiled with satisfaction, as she put it on conference mode. "Ms. Tanwar, I didn't realize that your unprofessionalism extends to phone etiquette as well. I have told you to not hang up on me without any warning." ASR sounded mad. And this pleased her to no end. Saakshi leaned back, almost purring in satisfaction. "Well Mr. Raizada, I thought to relieve you of my company, since you only mentioned how 'pointless' this conversation was." And just like that, she hung up again. Abhi now, was thoroughly alarmed. She giggled first, and then snarled out loud, remembering his words. She grabbed the files regarding the licenses and got up to leave. Just then, the phone rang again. She stilled, hand on the door, letting it ring. Abhi sighed, and stretched his hand out. Hearing him sigh and anticipating his next move, she whipped around and pointed at Abhi. "YOU...will NOT pick up that phone. Abhi, don't you DARE." With that, she turned and strode out the room, leaving a paralyzed Abhi, hand just inches away from the phone, which continued to ring.
Arnav stood in his cabin, facing the glass wall that looked over his domain, hearing the ring for the tenth time. His jaw clenched, he hung up and pressed redial. This time, the phone went to voicemail after the second ring. "This is Saakshi Tanwar's personal line at Satyam Creations. Please leave a message and I will return your call within five business days." He turned around and flung the phone towards the door in irritation, which landed right at Aakash's feet, which were in the process of entering the room. Aakash looked at the phone, which lay ruined at his feet, and then at the box in his hands. "I brought you a replacement for the previous phone you broke," he told Arnav, putting the box on his brother's desk. "I guess it came at the right time, since you no longer will be using your spare." Arnav glared at him. But Aakash, not willing to let the opportunity go, decided to have some fun. "Uh...Bhai...why exactly were you so..." he trailed off, as Arnav threw him an angry look. "Your Saakshi Tanwar. Hung up on me in the middle of the meeting. Thoroughly unprofessional, incompetent, arrogant little..." He paused, and took some deep breaths. "We were in the middle of a meeting, which was a total waste of time. We've been stalled for around a week now, totally due to her incompetence and mismanagement," he ranted. Aakash looked at him in confusion. "Meeting? Her mismanagement? But Bhai, I think the delay is from our end, we haven't returned the paperwork yet. They sent it about a week ago, but Aman said you haven't signed? How can they go ahead without us returning the signed paperwork to them, Bhai." If looks could have killed, Aakash would have been charred soot on the carpet at that moment.
Recognizing that he had hit a raw nerve, Aakash decided to back off. "Ok ok," Aakash said putting his hands up in surrender. "You probably know best, Bhai." As he turned to leave, he glanced at his brother, who was broodingly looking out at the office again, and he smothered a laugh as he recognized that the shaatir dimaag of ASR was probably whirling up another plan to get back at Saakshi Tanwar already. With a light step, and a soft whistle, he walked down the stairs, feeling like a million bucks.
