Part 3
"Bad news, ASR."
"What can possibly go worse in this already entangled case" said Arnav completely annoyed by the way this case was proceeding.
"Well, I just received a call from one of the investigator, he told me that Anjali's phone was not there when we found her corpse. Her phone is missing. The inspectors are already trying to track her phone's location and we will get the location in some minutes"
"It's not that bad, then! The location of the phone will lead us to the murderer."
"Hopefully"
"And yeah, Arnav, I told you about the one-way footprints right?"
"What about them?"
"Well, our experts checked them up and through the imprints we got, it's most likely to be a tennis shoes with Adidas brand!"
"Anything more about it"
"Yeah, I told you there was dust on the shoes right," Aman continued after Arnav's nod "well we found dust particles in the room just beside Anjali's… and that was the last place the murderer went with those shoes"
"This means that the murderer went in that room, changed the shoes and went out of the house. Well, did they find anything else in that room?"
"No, nothing"
"Hmmm Aman, don't you find it bizarre that despite the fact that Anjali is such a rich women, she doesn't have any security system, not even a security camera in her house."
"That does seem odd…" said the shrewd Aman. "Wait a minute Arnav, I'm getting a call!" said Aman as he moved out of Arnav's cabin.
After some minutes Aman came back with a morose face. "Guess what" he said.
"What?"
"Anjali's phone is nowhere to be traced and this may be because her phone has been broken or something."
"I should have known that the murderer would not be stupid enough to keep such huge evidence."
"Yeah and by the way the last place when her phone was actually working was around the area of Karol Bagh, the place where the lawyer of Anjali stays. And the phone was on till 11.48 and since then her phone is off."
"So, the murderer sent the message and damaged the phone"
"Yeah and before you ask me, yes I've already called the lawyer and he will be here in some minutes."
After some 20 minutes, a man in his late 50's entered ASR's cabin accompanied by Aman.
Aman introduced both man and urged the lawyer to have a seat.
"So, Mr. Roy you are Anjali's lawyer right?"
Mr. Roy nodded and looked at the young man apprehensively awaiting the next question.
"Ok, from our interrogation we got to know that Anjali, our victim wanted to have some significant change in her will?"
"Yes, that is true; she badly wanted to change her will."
"The previous will, would have benefited Mr. and Mrs. OP…" Arnav couldn't continue his statement as he was cut in by the lawyer, who provided him with crucial piece of information.
"And Mr. Akash as well!" said the experienced old man knowing that this might be an important information.
Arnav looked at Aman, and gulping the new set of information asked;
"And how would that benefit Akash?"
"Well, the previous will had Mr. and Mrs. OP being the guardian of only 75% of Anjali's property until Anjali's daughter turned 18. The other 25% would go to Mr. Akash. I know you think that Anjali and Akash hated each other, though Anjali may have been an arrogant person but she wasn't someone bad. She often told me that she would have loved if her father had shared his property on an equal basis to her and Akash. They may seem to hate each other but Anjali had a soft corner for Akash though I can't say the same for Akash."
"And what was the content of the new will?"
The answer of the lawyer shocked Arnav and Aman to the core.
The lawyer continued; "however, now that Anjali is already dead, the old will be applied since the new one just got drafted and Anjali hasn't yet signed that"
"By the way, on the day of Anjali's murder, did she come to meet you?" asked Aman.
"Yes" came the confident reply.
"At what time?" asked Arnav.
"It was 11 in the morning I guess and she left after an hour exactly, that is at 12."
Arnav nodded, things had started falling in place.
"Did someone come with her?" questioned Aman.
"No, but Akash came to meet me after she went" confessed the elderly man.
"Akash came to meet you," repeated Aman.
"Yeah, didn't I tell you that he is involved with Anjali's will, in fact we told him that we can personally come to London but he refused saying that he would come here himself. I called both of them together but Akash purposely came later, and when I asked him he told me that he didn't wanted to face Anjali as of now"
"Anyone else came with Anjali?"
"No"
"Ok, you may go" ordered Arnav.
The man moved out and Aman exclaimed, "Dude, I want to laugh….i mean this is so confusing! I have no idea who to suspect."
"I know right, but at least we have one suspect out!" said Arnav while mentally crossing out one of the suspect's name.
"Arnav, I guess we need to talk to those people again and this time we need to make sure that they reveal every damn thing they know!"
"You are right, Aman, if everyone would have revealed everything, the real murderer would have been behind bars till now, but everyone is hiding something!" catching his breath Arnav continued, "Call all of them and tell them to come here in 2 hours."
As Aman moved out, Arnav closed his eyes reflecting on Anjali's murder case whilst rubbing his temple. He thought of all the evidence they had amassed and how it led to more and more suspects. Something somehow didn't click in place, opening his eyes he caught hold of a paper weight and twirled it around. He was sure that he had missed something vital in this case, there was a missing link somewhere and he was unable to catch that.
Frustrated with himself, Arnav flung away the paper weight making it crash in the next corner of his cabin. Just at that time, Aman came in. Seeing the broken paper weight, Aman looked at Arnav admonishingly while Arnav bit his tongue realizing his mistake.
"Arnav, how could you do that, you broke my token of friendship which I gave you"
"I'm sorry Aman, I didn't realise," muttered a guilty Arnav.
"You know, I had to travel a long distance to buy this paper weight for you only because you liked it and in one moment, you broke it. I had to travel in a bloody taxi for over one hour and……" his statement laid unsaid as Aman realised something.
Something huge.
He looked at Arnav trying to guess if he was thinking the same thing. As if reading his thoughts Arnav replied, "I'm thinking the same thing Aman!"
"I can't believe that we nearly missed that!"
"Same here, but now…all makes sense."
"No, Aman, not everything makes sense, we still need to find some important proofs and now, I believe it's easier!"
"Yeah!"
"Come, let's go!"
"Huh, but where?"
"Just come, Aman"
****
It was only after 2 and a half hours of complete investigation that Aman and Arnav came back feeling satisfied with themselves. They had completely forgotten that they had called those people for investigation, however, on seeing them there Arnav asked all of them to come in his cabin. Even though, they knew who was the actual murderer, there were some stuff which still didn't make sense, so Arnav thought that it would be better to clear all his doubts at first."
Arnav sat down on his chair comfortably, took out his blackberry and started typing a message. He looked back and said, "why are all of you looking so scared?"
Arnav smirked seeing their shaken form.
"Ok, first of all, sit down all of you."
They all complied to Arnav's request.
"Listen, i've called you in the morning, but frankly I feel that you people didn't reveal the complete truth" said Arnav still punching his long text on his phone.
"Well, will start from you Khushi."
"Sir, I told you many times that I don't know anything else in this case. I would have surely helped if I knew something. I'm innocent and I assure you that I didn't do anything."
By now Arnav was staring, no, scratch that Arnav was ogling Khushi. Seeing his diverted attention, Aman who was sitting opposite Arnav thumped the latter's foot under the table.
Arnav glared at Aman in reply knowing that he was caught.
"Ok, I believe you… Payal you here?" asked Arnav.
"She is my sister and she has the right to be here," replied Khushi in a confident tone.
"Ok, Akash, shall we hear you and mind you, your 'No comments' won't work this time."
"I already told you everything I knew" replied Akash.
"How about you tell me why you came here, reveal your personal reason please."
Akash looked around, wiped his sweat, came close to Arnav's table and muttered "Fine"
He continued "Anjali was the one who called me here!"
"And why didn't you tell me that in the morning?" questioned Arnav not surprised of Akash's answer.
"I didn't wanted to be involved in all of this."
"You want it or not you are already involved, Mr. Akash!" replied Aman on Arnav's behalf.
"Go and sit down, now!"
"Excuse me, where do you think you are going," said Arnav on noticing Akash's moving out of his cabin.
"I have a flight to catch!"
"Well, you don't have the permission to leave, go and sit down now!" ordered Arnav.
"Shyam…"
"Sir, I confess that I didn't love Anjali. I was just using her to get a promotion and on seeing that she was withdrawing huge amount of money whenever I needed, I continued to play this game…"
"Good that you confessed yourself," said Arnav berating himself for not thinking of checking Anjali's bank account for any suspicious event.
"Ok, Mr. and Mrs OP, I have nothing to ask you" said Arnav making Aman looking at him weirdly. He nodded and Aman got the signal almost immediately.
As if on cue, Aman's phone rang and he went out of Arnav's cabin. Arnav stopped fussing with his mobile. "This case is becoming more and more confusing," said Arnav to all of them, "we literally have no evidence and this case seems far from being closed soon, so we will need your co-operation in this" lied Arnav blantantly.
When everyone nodded he told them that they could go. All were them had almost rushed out, when Aman came in and said in a loud tone, loud enough for everyone in and out of the cabin to hear "Arnav, I just received a call from the inspector and he told me that we have missed out on something very important in Anjali's bedroom. The inspector in charge had left from there, sealing the area and he told us to come and meet him at the police station and then all of us will go to Anjali's mansion later. He need to brief us first, that's why he called us to the police station. And uhh, yeah, there are no constables there so he told us to come to meet in like 30 minutes and after the discussion we will all go there."
"Ok" came Arnav's answer "help me clear this desk first, then we will go."
After the unnecessary desk clearing, Aman looked out checking whether there was anyone out. Turning back, he saw Arnav looking at him, he nodded negatively.
"Pfff, do you think, they heard it?" asked Aman.
"Of course they did, you were so loud."
"It was silly though!"
"Oh come on, Aman, do you think the murderer would smell how silly that idea was when there may be an evidence out there" finished Arnav with a wink.
"But Arnav, why this, I mean we could have caught….?" asked Aman genuinely confused.
"Aman, it would be better to catch the murderer red handed"
" So, let's go and meet our cloaked murderer."
" The bait had been laid, now, let us wait for the fish to come and catch it."
"Let's go, Arnav, we need to reach Anjali's Mansion before the murderer" said Aman.
Precap
Arnav was sitting leisurely on Anjali's couch with Aman beside him. The dark had prevailed again and it was almost 8 at night, but this time promising to bring out justice to the women who uselessly lost her life.
"Do you think our fish will come?" questioned Aman in a glum tone.
"Of course our fish will come."
"But, what if the fish came and went also"said Aman.
"Aman, I saw our fish outside our office when we were coming here in the car" confessed Arnav.
"You mean…" said Aman his tubelight brain finally flicked and he understood that the murderer was waiting for them to go and meet the inspector before coming here.
"I guess our fish is coming"said Aman in a low tone as soon as he heard the sound of footsteps.
The door opened, and in the darkness Arnav and Aman could see the human figure moving beside the door to switch on the light.
"Caught you!" Arnav said grinning at the expected face he saw.
