Khushi Kumari Gupta was shattered and heartbroken. She had never been dejected in her entire life, and to be turned down by the first guy she had developed true feelings for was piercing her even more brutally. She couldn't stop daydreaming about him. His laugh. The ache in his eyes. The way he avoided her after the meeting on the bench. She had tried desperately to explain to him that she had been genuine about her feelings, and every time he would smile kindly and explain that she did not need to grant him any favors... leaving her with a soft pat on her hand and a well hidden, but a severely hurt heart. Payal and Akash had been blind to Khushi's tears, and instead celebrated the news of Arnav turning down her proposal. Upon having to hear about who would be most suitable to accompany her to the prom once again, Khushi finally shouted at her friends for their inability to understand her emotions and refused to attend the college prom, leaving them open mouthed and disgusted with her immaturity.
So that was why the prom queen, Khushi Kumari Gupta was sitting alone in her bedroom on prom night, sipping green tea, with her ipod on shuffle, organizing her scattered Computer Engineering notes so she could use them in the future for reference. She was startled when she heard an unexpected knock outside her room, but quickly sighed of relief when she saw her father peering into her room from behind the open door.
"Sweetie? Can I come in?"
"Yeah Dad. I'm sorry about the mess, I'm just cleaning it up."
She shifted the mountains of notes and papers to make space for her father on her bed, offering some green tea from her kettle. As he took the cup from her hand, he noticed how she refused to look up at him, how her smile was missing from her face and how the happiness had vanished from her voice.
"Kuko, isn't today your prom night?" he asked gently sipping the green tea from his large mug.
Khushi's head shot up, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. How had her father been aware of this? She had never talked about prom at home, and she was sure he hadn't heard it from her recently MIA friends.
"But Dad... how'd you--"
"Sweetie, there's a kind, young gentleman waiting in a suit for you downstairs. I took a lucky guess. Should I tell him to wait for you?"
Thousands of butterflies erupted once again in the depths of Khushi's stomach, and she felt her cheeks reddening with happiness and excitement. Arnav had come for her. He had realized she had been sincere about her feelings. She felt as though she was soaring through the open sky, and grinning widely, she pushed her chuckling father outside her door, demanding him to tell this visitor to patiently wait for a few minutes till she was ready.
Perfection. For the first time in her life, Khushi had decided to dress to her true tastes... simplicity and elegance. The flashy, teal, sequined dress Payal had chosen for her had been discarded and tossed to a corner of her room, and instead Khushi had opted for a much simpler, red satin gown, with tiny rose pearls that adorned the neckline and sleeves made of the most delicate and intricately designed lace. Instead of sporting her regular curly hair, she left it completely natural, tying it into a bun on the top of her head, letting a few free strands carelessly fall around her bright and smiling face. She rimmed her hazel eyes in kohl and sprayed perfume with hints of lavender and sandalwood. She dressed minimally, only leaving in her nose pin and choosing modest and subtle pearl drops for her ears, knowing Arnav was not one to be concerned about her staying in line with current trends.
Khushi had never been so enthusiastic and eager. Her imaginings from her childhood were finally evolving into a reality. Prince charming was waiting at the doorstep, ready to whisk her off her feet and win her over. True, she had never imagined him in plaid, with a middle parting and with glasses, but he was still everything she wanted, and she had never felt more content and satisfied. Arnav was not what she had dreamed of... but was something much more.
She flitted down the stairs, her smile radiant and her eyes blooming, but what she witnessed upon reaching her living room knocked the breath out of her lungs and dropped the most uncomfortable weight onto her feeble shoulders. She almost toppled to the floor as she saw the face of the young gentleman who had been waiting for her. Because when he turned around, she was greeted by eyes of the most unsettling midnight.
