Part Three
Lunch. Khushi ran out of her Computer Engineering course, ignoring Payal's desperate pleas, straight for the common green... knowing fully well that she would meet Arnav sitting at his usual bench in the grass, offering bits of his dosa to his daily, chirping visitors. And as she ran, the hunched figure came into her view, the distinct frizzy hair, the orange plaid pants, and the smell of talcum powder and sweet almond milk reassuring her.
"Arnav?"
His body immediately tensed. He'd recognize that voice anywhere. Only Khushi Kumari Gupta could sound so distinctly angelic. But the chance of her calling him in his familiar patch of grass was not a possibility. So sighing, and saving himself from the disappointment, Arnav took another bit of his dosa and dropped it for the birds pecking near his feet. But he heard his name being called again, in the same chiming voice, so he turned around to have the breath being knocked out of his lungs.
Khushi Kumari Gupta was standing directly behind him, watching as he dispersed his lunch for his animal friends. She looked beautiful. Her stunning, kohl rimmed, hazel eyes gleamed in the rays of the harsh sunlight and her delicate hands were clasped tightly, only breaking apart to tuck a strand of her iron curled hair behind her ear. He paid no interest to her clothes or her expensive accessories, but he admired how she would rub her hands along her woolen sleeves when she felt the chill of the wind, and how her hoops would swing along her ruddy face with the pull of the breeze. He smiled at the reflection of the sun on her nose pin, a myriad of colors shining brightly, but not a match for the glint that came with her dazzling smile.
Arnav had been captured by Khushi ever since she thanked him their freshman year for lending his Biology textbook. She had been so modest and so completely thankful... something no other student in the university had managed to act around him, and in response, he had developed a little, but powerful crush on her. He would draw hearts around her initials like a lovesick elementary schoolgirl, only to be dejected at learning that she was happily dating the oh-so-desirable hunk, Shyam Jha. Even their breakup did not mend him. He admired her from a far, burying his feelings for her in the recess of his heart.
"Arnav?"
Her voice broke him out of his trance. He felt his cheeks reddening in embarrassment and tried to hide the surprise in his voice, failing miserably.
"Khushi? Do you need anything?"
"No. Well, yes. Umm. Do you mind if I talk to you?"
Her. The future prom queen. The girl who every guy drooled over. Wanted to talk. To HIM? He had been assured that she didn't even know his name. Dazed, he scooted on the bench to make room for her, spreading his bulky green sweater to assure that her bare legs would not sting by the burning metal. She smiled at his gesture and he found himself grinning stupidly at her response, suddenly sending god a quick prayer that none of his dosa had gotten stuck in his teeth. Surprisingly, she seemed nervous herself, shifting the dirt beneath her Nine West heels and twiddling her lavender painted nails. This was serious. He resisted the urge to pull out his handkerchief to wipe away the sweat beads forming at the back of his neck.
"Woh Arnav. Next week is prom, and... and I was wondering whether you'd... you'd be available?"
Woosh. Arnav sighed of relief. Knowing that he wouldn't be going to prom, she just needed his help with some issue because no one else would be free to help. And here he had been fretting over nothing. He mentally chuckled to himself.
"Available to do what? Do you want me to take over your tutoring block that night? I'm sure Namritaa won't mind."
Khushi was stunned. Not just because he had totally misinterpreted her, but also because he seemed to magically know the minute details of her life. Perhaps a few weeks ago she would have found this behavior stalkerish, but today, she was touched and flattered, butterflies taking off and fluttering in the depths of her stomach. She chuckled at his goofy, lopsided grin, a bit of dosa stuck between his teeth, before continuing.
"No, no. I was wondering if... if you'd like to go with me. You know... as maybe...a date?"
The most disturbing silence followed her proposal. Arnav's mouth dropped open in response, his eyes widening in unmasked shock. He attempted to speak, but no words came out. Khushi smiled shyly at his blatant response, breaking eye contact to suddenly admire the birds at their feet and to hide the flushing of her cheeks... only to hear something that she would have never expected.
Laughter.
She looked up, brokenhearted to see the man she had set her hopes on laughing at her simple and genuine request. The laugh didn't reach his eyes though, and Khushi's heart pierced on seeing ache hidden in his pools of honey brown.
"Is this a prank? Am I being recorded on television? "The Prom Queen takes the geekiest boy to the school dance"?"
Khushi felt her heart sink, the butterflies in her stomach now dying and withering away. She had to explain herself. She couldn't let him walk away without understanding her feelings and the reasoning behind them.
"How can you think that Arnav? I would never---"
"Khushi please" He covered his hand with hers gently and smiled kindly at her sullen face. "I think it's best we leave this here. We both know Shyam Manohar Jha looks better in the tux." With a gentle pat and tiffin in hand, he left her alone on the metal bench chuckling as he walked away, sure to walk a good distance before he wiped the tears that he could no longer control from falling.
