Chapter 4: New place and new friends.

Virat and Vaishali entered the meeting room followed by nervous Maanvi who was looking around the room to get familiar with surroundings. Actually Maanvi is the girl who gets nervous in the public. But when she is with her close friends then there is no one who can stop her from talking or mischief but people who meet her for the first time think that she is a shy girl; which is true only till she is friends with them. Everyone in the meeting room were eyeing Maanvi with curiosity. Virat introduced Maanvi to others saying, "She is the new student of our college, new VP's daughter". Everyone started speaking in whispers with their neighbours. Virat smiled at Maanvi which she didn't bother to return because she was upset with him. She was thinking, "was it necessary to add that last line- New VP's daughter" because she seriously didn't want students eying her with curiosity and amazement when she is roaming around in corridors. Virat got confused on seeing her reaction and whispered, " I don't think you would lose anything by giving a small smile saying hi while I am introducing". To which Maanvi replied curtly saying, "And I don't think it was necessary for you to mention that I am VP's daughter". Virat smirked giving an expression of 'what's the big deal!' Maanvi was going to snap at him but Vaishali interrupted virman's conversation and told Maanvi to sit beside her and the meeting started. Maanvi paid utmost concentration to all the proceedings. They were discussing about inter-college competition which was to be held in next month. She learnt that their college gives importance to extra-circular activities too which made her happy because Amritsar's college branch definitely lacked in these activities. She noticed that they were having difficult time in choosing the student who is good in painting and sketching for decoration and designing backdrop. She had an urge to speak out loud saying that she can be the student whom they are searching for but controlled herself since she was feeling nervous to speak in front of new students. The meeting finally got over around 10:15 am and many students left the room except 5 of them including Virat, Vaishali and Maanvi. There were one more boy and girl who made their way to Virat who was standing at the main desk piling up the minutes and other papers. They helped him with it and soon Virat along with two other students came near Vaishali who was noting the proceedings of the meeting. The guy introduced himself as Ajay and extended his palm his hand towards Maanvi who copied the same actions with a smile. Vaishali introduced the girl to Maanvi," Maanvi she is Priya who takes care of costumes along with Ajay". Priya gave her a warm smile which was returned by Maanvi. Virat who noticed everything with silence then declared," I am going to Caf because it's just 10:20 and there are 40 min left for classes". Without waiting for anyone's reply he started heading towards the cafe. Vaishali pulled Maanvi by arm to join and they have to run a little to catch up with Virat. Ajay and Priya said that they will not join as they have some other work. Maanvi found it irritating the way Virat said as though he doesn't care about others choice.

When they reached cafe Virat turned around to ask what the girls want but Vaishali answered to him without waiting for his question ,"one coffee" and she turned to Maanvi who said "I want black tea if it's available or otherwise..." but Virat cut in her sentence," of course it's available there is nothing which is not available here in our college's caf and in between you are health conscious, aren't you?", saying the last sentence he stared Maanvi from head to toe which made her conscious about herself. She sighed in relief when Virat stopped staring at her and immediately made his way to the counter and she thought that this guy is too proud of his college and muttered unknowingly the word 'egoistic' under her breath which was audible to Vaishu and she chuckled saying, "No re, Viru is not egoistic he is just trying to be friendly with you" and winked at her. Vaishali and Maanvi made their way to the far away corner table and waited for Virat to arrive. When Virat arrived he was carrying three cups in his tray which he kept on table carefully and sat down. Maanvi was thinking that may be its self-service cafe but her prejudice was cleared when Vaishali asked," Why did you bring the order Virat? Where are the waiters?!". Virat casually replied, " arrey that Varun is there no he is not feeling well; so he took the leave and Ramesh is alone there to handle everyone and Mahesh is doing the work of taking orders so I thought that I myself will bring our order" . Now hearing the last line Maanvi's mouth was like 'oh!' thinking that's so sweet of him. Virat who was sitting opposite her watched her with amusement and he forwarded his hand towards her chin and shut her mouth saying, "close your mouth otherwise mosquitoes will make way into your stomach".

Maanvi made a fake angry irritating face at him and asked mockingly, " Was it a joke? Should I laugh?"

Virat: yeah smile, show your teeth? Let me see whether you brush your teeth everyday or not?

Maanvi: Ewww Virat your sense of humour is so poor! She pulled her face stretching the word 'ewww' .

Virat: oh really?! *raising his eyebrows*

Vaishu who was a silent spectator of virman's conversation was eying both of them with amazement. Virat who was bickering with Maanvi caught Vaishu staring at them especially him with mischievous glint in her eyes. He immediately understood what's going on in her mind and decided not to give her chance so he started paying attention on his coffee while Maanvi who was oblivious to what's going around, was immersed in texting someone.

Then something suddenly struck Virat's mind.

Virat: ( Maintaining the volume which is just audible to Vaishu)

Vaishu, don't you think my father was acting quite weird today morning at dining table?!

Vaishu: yes yaar even I felt like that but you na how this papas are. They are always thinking about one work or the other. Maybe uncle was thinking about some important case or client and for the same reason he didn't attend even Mrs.Choudhary's welcome ceremony.

Virat just nodded his head absent-minded as though he agreed with Vaishu but he was still suspicious about his father's behavior today morning. He decided that he will go deep into the matter and find out the true reason.

Virat reminded both Maanvi and Vaishu that there are only 10 minutes left to gather in the auditorium to welcome new VP. All three then set together to the auditorium. Maanvi was confused of where to go because there were many groups formed. She looked helplessly at Virat who understood her confusion, "You are in 2^nd year right? So you go and join that group. You can't be with us because we are in 3^rd year", saying this he pointed to the opposite corner where there were some students gathered chatting away happily. Maanvi felt nervous because although it was only 1 day that she was acquainted with Vaishali but still she found her company comfortable. She thought even Virat; whom she met 1hr back is easy to hang-on with. She went near the group and stood silently thinking how to start the conversation. She was busy trying to choose the introductory statements when she saw that a girl with nearly her height and books in one hand wearing casual jeans and pink top was eying her curiously. Maanvi was trying not to freak out because on the first place she was feeling nervous and on top of that she acknowledged that the girl is staring at her curiously which was no way helping her to relax. She gave a nervous smile to the girl who took it has the welcome smile and said, "Hi". They just had a formal conversation when they heard the noise from the stage-"Check, hello, check, mike testing-1,2,3." All eyes were now directed to stage. The person after checking the mike handed over the mike to Principal Mr.Sharma who announced the arrival of new VP and gave formal welcome note and after few welcome speeches from other guests and thank-you speech from Madhura the meeting ended and all headed to their classes. Maanvi was glad that no one announced to students that she is their new VP's daughter because she didn't want to be in the limelight and want her fellow students treating her as though she is a stalwart.

Maanvi was checking her time-table trying to figure out where-about of her first class when she noticed Virat, Vaishali, Ajay and Priya making their way out from the auditorium. She smiled at them and was again back reading her time-table. Virat seeing her confused expression went near her and said," B.Com 2^nd year classes are on the 2^nd floor". Maanvi jumped startled by his voice because she didn't notice him coming near her and on the top of that he said that in her standing close. Virat was confused by her expression but then he realized the reason and chuckled at her. Maanvi was embarrassed and mouthed sorry to him. He replied," It's really okay. I must say sorry to you for sudden entry". She just gave him a smile and rushed from there not wanting to be in that embarrassing situation anymore. Here Virat was smiling while his eyes followed her until she disappeared near the stairs. Virat then turned around and saw that Vaishali was looking at him with curiosity, the same teasing and curious glint in her eyes which he noticed in the morning too from the corner of his eyes when he was talking with Maanvi while she was busy staring at them. He raised his eyebrows and asked her the reason for her staring now and in the morning to which she replied, "You really don't know why I am looking at you and Maanvi with a smile?"; to which Virat answered innocently by shaking his head in a no gesture. Vaishali retorted," Isn't it obvious?" , thinking that Virat's reply was like testing her intelligence. Now Virat was really confused. Vaishali gave a sigh and said," You like her, I mean Maanvi. Don't you?" Hearing this Virat burst out laughing and tried controlling his laugh when he saw the sad and offended look on Vaishali's face. Virat tried to make her understand," Look Vaishu, I just met her today morning. How can u think like that?! We are not even good friends till now. You are thinking too much further. You know me na that I am too choosy about my friends and this is something more serious than friendship you are talking about, isn't it? I bet she doesn't even think me as a friend"

Vaishu: oh yes Virat I know you very well that's why I said that you like her. I have many reasons to think like that. (Virat tried to cut her but she continued.) First, as you said you never make friends quickly but in Maanvi's case you are ready to make her your friend even though you met her today.

Virat: when did I say that I want to be friends with her?

Vaishu: You said "we are not even GOOD friends"(she said this by emphasizing on the word-'Good') which tells that you consider her as a normal friend but not "GOOD". It's ok because you are not in a hurry to make even a 'normal friend' and here u already consider as a friend even though not good. Second point, you don't speak with strangers in the way you spoke with her today. (Seeing the confused expression again on Virat's face she began to explain clearly about what she meant) I mean you don't tease people with whom you just met. You do the mischief only with the close friends and family-members and with others you act sophisticated but today morning u did tease her didn't you? About the handshake, remember? Although it was a sort of polite manner but still u did tease her which is first step that says you like pulling her leg. Wait how can I forget your conversation with her in the canteen! (

Saying this she gave a teasing and knowing smile!

Virat: I even like pulling your leg. But we are good friends.

Vaishu: yeah and you do love me as a friend but the way you spoke to Maanvi was something different. Trust me you never spoke to me like that and I saw that likeness glint in your eyes which you find in my eyes when I meet Akaash. Oh come on there is nothing wrong if you like her Virat. I am just saying you 'LIKE' her and not 'LOVE' her. What is wrong in that to accept?

Virat: Vaishu I don't think what you are saying is correct or incorrect. Just drop the matter, will you?

Virat wanted to end this matter because hearing Akaash's name he remembered that he forgot to warn Maanvi about the girl with whom she was talking in auditorium!!!
