Part 27
Maanvi felt disorientated and the doctors started to work once again. The baby was wheeled out for further checks and Maanvi told Virat to follow on, she didn't want him to be alone. There was the doctors scurried and Virat kissed Maanvi's hand before letting go.
One week later
Maanvi was now home with the baby and Virat had moved back in, temporarily. Post the birth, Maanvi was still weak after the caesarean. She still needed taking care of because complications had arisen and needed help with the baby.
The room was dark, just as she turned to her side, Laksh started to cry. Slowly, she lifted herself up and moved over the Moses basket. She tried picked up her son, after lifting him up a couple of inches she placed him back down, at that moment Virat entered. He came behind her picked him back up as Maanvi stepped back on sat the bed. He carefully brought him over and placed him in her hands.
"He's hungry," Virat sat next to Maanvi and passed her the feeding pillow to rest him on.
Slowly, she lifted him up to burp him before Virat put him back down as he had fallen asleep, once again.
"Thank you," she spoke softly as she leant up against the bed frame.
"Not a problem," he placed the blanket over Laksh and made sure he was snuggled in. Virat sat beside Maanvi, took her hand and rubbed it lightly.
"No just for that. For everything. For doing everything I never expected you to do and for doing it without me saying anything. Damn... these stupid tears, I didn't mean to cry," he wiped away her tears and simply smiled.
"You're not going to say anything now are you," she giggled while finishing wiping away her tears.
"Complain when I don't let you speak and now," carefully she stood up, forcing Virat to stand up too. She headed out of the room leaving father and son alone.
When Maanvi returned, both Virat and Laksh were missing. She began to panic and wondered where they had gone. His blanket was unturned. Quickly, she back out and checked each room. Finally, she opened the box room door to find Jeevika and Virat with Laksh. He was on the changing mat as Virat changed nappy and Jeevika distracted him. He started to wail, when Virat removed the dirty happy. Jeevika lightly soothed him, in a moment daddy was done, and it was if nothing had ever happened.
"Come to masi," carefully lifting him up once she had finished dressing him. She placed him over her shoulder as he started to moan and whinge.
"Someone's cranky," Virat spoke as he placed his cap back on and rubbed his cheek. Neither of them had noticed Maanvi standing up the door watching their antics.
She looked around the nursery to could see that Viren and Jeevika had finished sorting and preparing it for her. She had all the furniture before but because her delivery was unexpected she was not fully prepared. Clothes in one box, nappies in another, wipes in their drawer, everything was in its place - for now.
Virat turned to see Maanvi standing just outside. Jeevika passed over Laksh to her, as he moved from Jeevika's hands he started to fuss. She rocked him gently to soothe him but he kept fussing. Jeevika advised her to switch position as he might find it more comfortable. After moving him, he still couldn't stop wriggling. His cries started to get louder and louder and Maanvi began to feel overwhelmed. She didn't know what to do or how she could stop him. She edged towards Virat, he took Laksh from her and began to cradle him.
Maanvi started to walk out, Jeevika followed. After a minute Laksh's cries had stopped. She placed her hand on Maanvi shoulder and held on tightly. Just as Jeevika was about to speak, Virat entered. She gave a light kiss before leaving.
She headed to downstairs to find Viren marking some work.
"Everything ok?" She nodded, as he nicked his biscuits.
"She's just overwhelmed. Thought I'd give them some space, for now." She passed him the rest of shortbread and gave him a light kiss.
"Here, take him," Maanvi shook her head. "Do you wanna sit or stand?" He edged her over to the bed as she sat he kneeled on the floor with Laksh. Making sure he securely had hold of him, he took one hand and opened her. Gently, he placed him back in his mother's arms. Once again he started to fuss and she could sense he was about to start again, this time much worse that before. She pushed her arms forward. Virat tenderly took pushed back and placed the baby closer to her, right next to her heart.
"You've held him before. He's just trying to make life difficult. After all he is our son." He tried to get a smile out of Maanvi but it was futile. She felt she was doing everything wrong and simply wanted Virat to take him from her hands. She couldn't deal with this, why wasn't Virat doing anything? Where was her Di? Where was Viren? It felt as if a mountain was building on top of her and that she would explode.
Unexpectedly, Virat touched her hand making her jump. Stunned she looked up,
"Stop worrying and just look at him. You'll know what to do." He stood up and left, not before kissing his son.
Maanvi was left confused, she couldn't stand up with him with this dear inside her and now she was all alone. How did she ever think she could do this alone? All those months ago when she didn't want to tell Virat to now. She felt as rush of emotions, confusion, anxiety, incompetency, fear rushed though every vein. She couldn't soothe her child, what use was she. Virat could do it in an instance, Jeevika knew his tricks and Viren well he could do anything. She had tried everything she could think of. A soft rock, a calming soothe even a quiet rhyme but everything she tried failed. He groaned, complained, and wailed, his cries were beginning to become unbearable. Suddenly something happened there was silence and she could think; he had stopped. She was holding him with both arms opened as he rested on her lap, swaying ever so slowly. She looked down to see him fast asleep, looking peaceful. No one would have imagined that the same child was screaming at the top of his lungs, only a few minutes ago. Carefully and at snail pace, she brought him closer to her, ensuring she didn't wake him. Slowly, she brushed her fingers against his skin. In that moment she...
The door creaked open,
"Sorry, I have disturbed you have I?" Viren quietly whispered. She signalled him to help her place Laksh back into his Moses basket.
