I am hooked already by the small bangle clad hand clutching the doll, the tyrannical father and the idealistic conflicted hero.

I do not know about the historical and the cultural accuracies but I just love, love, love the premise of the story of a young man trying to come to terms with his identity and conflicted between his ideals and family restrictions and obligations. It is such a stark contrast to Khushi sitting in the railway platform having lost everything except her small trunk and Arnav's life in his mansion.

The setting of British ruled India, Just before the freedom struggle and in the traditional family was very vividly described. I am picturing a composite background from movies like Uphaar, Swami or Parineeta.

Look forward to more...

The narrative with the British Raj milieu, is wonderful, ..an avant-garde to be precise..
Arnav's characterization is immaculate...his quagmire was so realistic...and, Khushi's innocence, her positivity and the exuberance she displayed, to meet her knight in shining armor ,despite the loss of loved ones was so heartwarming...
I loved his Grandma's pearls of wisdom at reining in anger , and, the last few sentences unsettled me.. a mere child with her favorite doll Rupa is already a wife to a man much older to her😭...I could actually comprehend what Arnav must have felt...😔 and, thank you for dropping the PM...have another wonderful story to look forward to, now..

I love period drama and independence era in particular

Interesting that for all his humanitarian leanings he was too pre occupied at being disgruntled to even fathom losing your whole family to cholera at 12

Oh jenny !

What a beautiful start to the new story.
The backdrop - that of the freedom struggle.
What is shown happening in the Mallick household happened in countless rich and feudal families during the freedom struggle. A rich, zamindar father enjoying the privileges granted to him by birth whereas his son untouched by the lifestyle of his father craves to join the brave, educated and selfless band of freedom fighters.
Both characters beautifully depicted. And so is the mother who is under total influence of her husband and probably takes his pursuit of pleasures as a natural way of the zamindars.
It is the old grand mother who is the wise one, wise, human and understanding who seems to be arnab's succour at the moment.
And in comes Khushi, the child bride. How will the relationship between arnab and khushi bloom ? Will the little girl understand her husband's ideology and cravings ? She is young and can be groomed by him to understand his beliefs. Its will be a challenge to Arnav that is , if he chooses to do so. Else he can just let her grow up supervised by his mom & grand mom.
But I am sure, the little girl cannot be ignored. She will soon warm her way into his heart through her innocence and liveliness and soon will become a source of happiness, strength and respite for arnab.
SO beautifully started, Jenny.
