Summer Affairs Chapter TWO
"Are you there Miss?" Angad Khanna walked towards her and snapped his fingers before her.
"I'm sorry." She took a step back and calmed herself down.
He was still grinning wildly. "What brings you back? How are you anyways?"
"I'm fine thank you." He was so nice! But she had to be professional with him, he was a married man after all. "I'm Kripa Sharma. I'm the new Nanny for your girls, I believe."
"Oh!" He was astonished and he didn't try to hide. "I was expecting someone older. You seem very young."
"I am Mr. Khanna. In fact I was expecting older man with gray hair and a wrinkled face. You're quite… handsome."
He chuckled. "Take a seat Miss." He pulled out the chair and after she was seated he went back to his own chair. "Well. You can decided. I'm a thirty-three year old man with three young girls."
"You're only thirty-three?" Her eyes were wide and she couldn't hide the shock in her eyes even if she wanted to.
He threw his head back and roared in laughter. Kripa's mouth closed and she straighter shoulders. "Yes Roshni and I got married right out of high school. We had Sana exactly ten months later." He sighed as the dazed look replaced with a sad one.
"That's amazing Mr. Khanna." She noticed the sad look in his eyes that looked like marbles. "Where is Mrs. Khanna?"
"I'm surprised you don't know, Miss. Sharma." He looked at her with the sad look leaving him slowly. "She passes away in a car accident three years back. It was a terrible accident."
Something hit Kripa right in the gut, strong and hard. She felt his pain right away. "Oh. I'm so sorry." She was shocked how sympathetic she felt for him. "It must have been tragic for the girls."
"Yes," he looked at her again with a lighter mood. "Specially for my youngest one Sia."
Kripa frowned, and then turned at the door opening. The old lady Trish stood in the door with a warm smile.
"Hi, Miss." She recognized Kripa. "How are you? Feeling any better?"
"Yes. Thank you." She looked at the little girl who came running beside Trish and right into Angad's arms.
"Hey sweetheart." Angad kissed his youngest daughter and scooped her into his arms. "Kripa this is Sia. Sia that is Kripa."
"Hi Sia." She looked at the little girl, who acquired her father blue eyes and beautiful rich brown hair.
"Hi." She said in a soft, low voice. Followed by a small smile.
Kripa smiled back and looked at Angad. "Mr. Khanna I'll take the job."
"Thank you." Angad smiled relieved. "We can sign the papers then and Trish can show you your room." He placed Sia back on her feet and took out the contract paper. She read them and singed them quickly.
"Sia would you like to show me around?" Kripa asked holding her hand out.
At first hesitant, she took her hand and walked away with her.
Angad Khanna stood in his room alone. Shocked how quickly Sia was able to leave with her unlike every other lady he had appointed for the kids in the past three years.
Holding Sia's hand Kripa walked up the stairs and they both turned into a corridor. The walls were made of windows, and so was the ceiling. Out the windows there was a small windowsill built that held flowers. Millions of different types of flowers all around.
Kripa could help but just stare. Never in her life had she seen something so beautiful. So elegant. It seemed as if it was right out of the book. Before she knew it they were turning out of the corridor into a another, normal, hallway. It seemed like she was walking to a hotel room. Finally when they reached the last door Trish opened it for her.
Kripa noticed that Sia had held her hand the entire way and she hadn't said even a word.
"This is your door Miss." Trish walked and opened all the curtains. Then she turned back to Kripa and smiled at her astonished look. The room was as big as her apartment. She was standing in the sitting area of the room which was adjacent to her bedroom and a bathroom. The walls were painted in a light, rosy, pink color and the furniture was entirely Italian.
"This is beautiful." She gasped. "Thank you."
"I'm glad you liked it Miss. Sharma." Trish smiled at her and walked back to Sia. "Now you can settle in. If you need anything just ask. Dinner is served at eight so be ready. Now if you would excuse me, I have to get a few things done."
"Alright." Kripa moved aside and allowed the two to leave her room. As soon as she heard the door close behind her she rushed into her bedroom with another cry of joy.
Everything was absolutely lavish and expensive. She only dreamed to live in such a place. But she was actually living in one now. For three months only, but it would be an experience of a lifetime.
At seven fifty-five there was a knock on her door. She looked up from her old, ready to break laptop and stood to open the door. In front of her stood Trish.
"Hi Trish." Kripa smiled at the old lady. Her pale blue eyes were so warm. Something that reminded her of her own mother.
"Miss. Sharma the dinner had been laid out. Would you care to please join?"
"Trish." She said astonished. "I… I eat with them?"
"Yes. Master wants you to be acquainted with his daughters. He has asked you to join, Miss. Sharma."
She smiled pleased. He was a nice man without a doubt. He had money, fame, and power. And yet he was not egoistic and judgmental. He knew how to treat people, his employees. But, Kripa reminded herself, he was a Father of three girls. Widower. And, there was a six year difference in their ages. But above everything he was her boss. If anything happened between them the first thing to touch a tongue would be, 'she trapped him for his money.' Because no young lady in this world would like to marry a man with three kids. And, that was a bitter truth.
"Miss. Sharma." Trish lightly touched her arm to bring her attention back.
"I'll be right down Trish. And please call me Kripa, you're older to me."
Trish smiled, "Alright. Please hurry."
Kripa sat down beside Sia and smiled at her while Trish served the dinner.
"Good evening Mr. Khanna." Kripa looked at him with a smile.
"Good evening. I would like you to meet me second daughter Sanjana." He looked at his daughter with a smile. "This is Kripa."
"Hi Miss. Kripa." Sanjana smiled at her. The girl looked nothing like her father. She had rich black hair and dark brown eyes. Very much like the ones Kripa owned. Something told her that she looked and behaved more like her mother. "You're beautiful."
"A little less then you." Kripa blinked at her with a sweet smile, then turned to Angad. "And, your oldest daughter, Mr. Khanna?"
"She is late." He glanced at his watch angry.
"Who said I'm late?" Sana Khanna walked into the dinning room dressed in a pair of shorts and a light pink shirt. "There are fifteen seconds till eight."
"Alright Sana." Angad was disappointed with her attitude. She was a sweet daughter but a typical sixteen year old. "Please have a seat. How was driving school today?"
"It was excellent." She now noticed Kripa sitting on the chair beside her father. The place where she had sat after her mother had passed away or no one else.
Anger filled her as she squared her shoulders and looked at her. "And who is this?"
"This is Kripa, Sana."
Sana's brow lifted as she looked at Angad. "Father," he arms crossed in anger, "why was this not discussed with me?"
Angad dropped his spoon in his plate and looked at her, "Because I don't think it's necessary to tell you everything. You're my daughter and you need to behave like one."
"Really!" She was cool. Her voice was still soothing but her eyes, her green eyes, were angry. Kripa looked into them and saw hate mixed with sadness and frustration. "Then she is a Nanny and she should behave like one. Dinners are meant to be eaten with family, not…" she stopped looking at her. "More importantly, a Nanny," her gaze shifted to Kripa, "should be not eating where I should be eating where my…."
"Enough." Angad stood up pushing his chair back. "Young lady do you not have any manners? Do you need to be taught how to behave with elders again? Trish."
"Yes Master."
"Sana will be having her lunch in her room today."
"Father!" She yelled.
"Yes Master."
"No!" Kripa stood up. "I will be leaving, and she will be sitting here and eating this meal. She is correct Mr. Khanna; I'm an employee, not family."
A rush of guilt washed Sana as Kripa picked up her plate and walked away. But she had seen it come, and had moved out of the way just in time and allowed the wave of guilt now mixed with anger roll on her father.
"You will still have dinner in your room."
"I don't want dinner." She turned around and stormed into her room.
Angad closed his eyes and sat down with his head in his hands. Moments later he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and saw Sia.
She climbed into his lap and hugged him. "Are you going to leave us like Mommy?"
Tears came and quickly dried in his eyes as he held his youngest tightly. "I wouldn't leave you alone even if god asked me."
"I miss Mom a lot Dad." She nuzzled her cheek against his chest as she broke into tears again. "Will she come back?"
"I don't know, sweetheart." He pressed a kiss in her head and looked at Sanjana, and held his hand out. She jumped from the table and hugged her father as well.
What am I doing wrong, Roshni? He asked closing his eyes. Why did you have to leave?
Kripa was pacing her room when Angad knocked on the open door. When she didn't respond he stepped inside. "Kripa."
She stopped instantly and looked at the door. "I'm sorry." She stood up straighter and walked to him. "I didn't notice you there."
"It's ok. I'm sorry about Sana…"
"Don't worry about it." She waived a hand and smiled. "She's just acting like another teenager. I didn't mind."
"Thank you."
"It's ok. You should go talk to her Mr. Khanna."
"I will." He sighed.
"Nicely, calmly." She added.
He smiled as he looked back at her now. That was exactly what Roshni used to tell her whenever he had an argument with any of his daughters. "Thank. And it's Angad. Save yourself some breath."
She smiled. "Good luck with her."
"Is that my cue to leave?" A grin played on his face followed by a charming smile that mad Kripa extremely uncomfortable.
"It's your house Mr. Khanna…" She watched his brow lift. "Angad. But if you don't mind I have to get some work done."
"I was joking. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Alright. Good night."
"Good night."
