Chapter 4

As Khushi watches Arnav get ready in front of the mirror she had expected nothing but the silent treatment but instead was surprised to find him behaving the norm. Waking up a little later than usual Arnav watches Khushi sit up in bed, her eyes tired, the surprise of nobody having woken her up visible on her face. It was nearly 9am far later than she would get up usually get up . At a distance watching her in the mirror Arnav wishes Khushi good morning before asking something of her whilst he adjusts his tie. Khushi get ready we are going out.. Confused as to what he was talking of Khushi wonders whether she had heard correctly. Bahar..bhahar kaha? (Out? Out where?) without realizing she happens to look into mirror and her eyes lock with his as he answers her question with an glow in his eye. On a date..

Arnav sees Khushis uncertain expression and adds a little more detail his words affectionate, seductive, clever yet a little flirtatious If youre going to fall in love again Khushi you have to start somewhere.

Arnav watched the way Khushi refrained from replying, her eyes scattering around the room just not a him, she didnt approve of his words, Arnav knew his wife well. Watching her get out of bed pick up a saari and a towel from her drawer, in due course of her walking to the washroom Khushi walks past him with his back to her only to feel his palm circled around her forearm stopping her in her steps.

Bura laga? ( were you offended? ) he knew she had took offence to his words, turning to him her eyes a little numb after last she looked into his expression and saw immense understanding and affection ..because you are already in love?, we are already in love..yehi na? It was just that, Khushi didnt like the thought of falling out of love it was just her love didnt feel the same as before thats all. Khushi quite under his watch yet her heart thankful of his understanding of her didnt expect what was next from him. Will you wear the pink and green dress? The one with the pom poms on the sleeves?

...

It was nice to see her in the attire that was a trademark to her, his eyes drifting off the road, to the mirrors in the car more often so he could check on her, admire her, the conversation was non-existent but this is why he was doing this.

Having noticed that they had long driven past the usual high street of up market restaurants Khushi wonders where they are heading when the roads get a little more rural but as the car comes to a slow stop looking out of the window she recognized this place. Chale?? Khushi heard from beside her as he took the car keys out of the engine and pulled out a bottle of mineral water from the back seat. Surprised she was to be stood out in front this place.

They had been here many a time, when Arnavs choice of restaurants turned out to be disappointing, when Khushi couldnt sleep at night, when they needed somewhere to be alone to talk..or when Arnav knew something was bothering his wife this was the place.

Many a dates, many a happy, tense, sad, funny even argumentative times they had spent at this roadside panipuri stall. There was a particular wooden bench on the side road they would sit at. That familiar spicy scent of panipuris with the mix of the fresh greenery of the roads bought back endless memories for Khushi.

.. last time you beat me my 2 panipuris Khushi...its time to even the score. As khushi saw an sparkle in Arnavs eyes she couldnt help but draw a smile to her face..all those hilarious times competing with one another would never leave her. She already loved what he had done for her..this was something only he would think of. It was awkward at first yet watching him eat and put forward a childish bet khushi couldnt help herself.

A few minutes into there time and all that could be heard..from a distance on the roadside was the crunching, laughing and gasps for water. Khushi watched the ease on her husbands face, the way he hadnt mentioned last night at all. Once all the eating was done with..Khushi wasnt hundred percent herself yet seem to be breaking the walls she had created around herself.

As Arnav washed his mouth down with much needed water Khushi seemed to want to want to talk. Arnav was right in thinking that this place would do wonders. Aap gussa nahin hai? (Are you not angry?) Having swallowed down the mouthful, lowering the water bottle down from his mouth Arnavs eyes take to innocent warmth yet he is aware of what Khushi was referring to.

You spoke your mind khushi you were honest, why would I be angry.

Khushi was left speechless, she looked into those velvert eyes of his and wondered just how he could be this way. She couldnt keep her eyes off his, they were comforting, warm, understanding..and spoke volumes even though he was silent. Mushkil se adaadat daali thi hame aap ke yaha na hone ki aur jab aap vapas aayey toe ham kaise pesh aayey..hame kaise hona chahyiey kuch samaj nahin aayay. (It was hard for me to get used to you not being around and when you came back I just had no idea of what was expected from me.)

Hame aapki kaami bohot mehsush hui bohot..ham ne toe yey bhi socha tha ke shyaayad hamse koi galti hue aur usi ke saaza de rahe hai aap hame (I missed you so much, I even began to think that maybe you were punishing me for something I had done wrong. )

Arnav felt his heart sink, Khushi seemed to have thought of the worst of times in his absence, he had never thought his absence would have such an impact on her.

His eyes a little more serious and words spoken with the upmost conviction. Arnav turning to Khushi watched her eyes carry an upset that needed comforting, a thought that needed putting to rest. Khushi.. it was nothing of the sort and you know that

Ham bas woh khushi bana chahte they joe aap chor gayey they, ek atchi patni.( I just wanted to be good wife..the khushi you loved..the khushi you left behind).

Putting his hand over hers. You are good wife Khushi, you were, are, always will be and you are my Khushi. For the first time in a long time Khushi felt light hearted, like she was finally letting a weight off her mind. Tears of relief taking to the corners of her eyes Khushi undergoes a slight overwhelm as she feels Arnavs touch upon her. A ringtone interrupting the moment, It was Khushis phone that was going off and with It what looked like the number of a client but Khushi no longer handled the catering business and was just about to decline the call when being stopped by Arnav. Seeing Arnav insist with a smile Khushi takes the call, the volume being slightly high on the phone enabling him to hear the conversation.

An elderly sounding man requesting an urgent order of jalebis, about to explain that she was no long the one to contact, the urgency in the mans voice and Arnavs prompts from the side meant that Khushi couldnt refuse.

Having agreed to a 200 jalebis order before 5pm putting the phone down Khushi thinks about how she was going to fulfill it. Shukla ji was away, seeing that thought develop on Khushis face before Khushi could put her thought into words he makes prompt to leave.

.

Stopping outside Khushis fathers old halvayi store, khushi looks towards Arnav in the drivers seat and is genuinely unaware of what was going on. Ham yaha.. ? Jalebiya banani hai.. 200 right? (Were making jalebis), his tone light and eyes expressive.

Khushi was confused, this was the last thing she had expected.

This is where she had been running her catering business from, looking around at was an old traditional confectionery store, it was modest, simple. At one end an old empty glass counter for sweets no longer used, a few wooden tables and chairs and further into the shop out of sight a kitchen. There was a certain warmth about this place, he regretted never having the time to visit it before, it was all good and well him paying off Khushis family depth and gifting Khushi the catering service but he had never seen it for himself.

On an old wooden desk in the corner was a stash of old books, files with the title KKGSR catering which put a smile on his face and beside them a small idol of devimaya. It was khushi all over and thats what he loved.

Walking into the kitchen to khushi looking a little distressed with the phone.

Sukhla ji ka phone nahin lag raha (I cant get through to Shukhla ji )

yey..hes on holiday. He said ever so casually but Khushi seemed to panic.

Ham .akela kaise.. (How am I going to make them on my own? ) He seemed to not share her worry.

You are not alone khushi you have me..

She couldnt believe her ears and her reaction was natural Aap..? ( you?) Watching him take off his blazer..roll the sleeves of his shirt up Khushi was stood watching in amazement.

She laughed at his incapability, got angry at his arrogance, dusted off the sugar from his shirt, saved him from spitting oil. In due course of a 200 jalebis admired his every detail, that love that affection, those feelings she could feel floating back but was it too good to be true, if she was scared of one thing it was getting to close to him. Whilst Arnav boxed up the last few jalebis, sealed the box and added the label he caught Khushi eyes upon him. Aap..hame phir se chor kar toe nahin jayenge naa..? (You wont leave me again will you? )

.

They spoke for hours for before returning home He had listened to and remedied her concerns and looking to his side now he saw an relaxed, smiling, happy khushi.. the khushi he had left behind reaching home Arnav thought about their day together and wondered if It could be called a date. Im sorry khushi.. I was meant to take you on a date..instead yey.. Khushi didnt mind.

Theekh hai Arnavji.. is se behtar toe kuch ho hein nahin sakta tha. (its okay Arnavji, I couldnt have thought of anything better.).

Walking into Shaantivaan at a late hour having been away since the early hours of the day the state in which both Arnav and khushis are in is something noticeable. Their clothes stained with the marks of jalebi batter and oil, Arnavs appearance stood out more for he was never dressed untidily.

Khushi seemed to be less of the traditional wife and bahu in appearance and in more of a girly attire.. all to be noticed and wordlessly disapproved of by dadi.

Arnav felt Khushi let go of his hand instantly as they walked into the house and dadi happened to be walking past.

She was judging them both, more so Khushi than her grandson, Arnav giving an equally disproving look of the way dadi seemed to react takes khushis hand back into his, he could feel Khushis eyes on him. Unsure, surprised, anxious of how it would look but none of it mattered to him. He took himself and his wife..and walked past dadi without a care in the world. He could still feel Khushis eyes looking up towards him, he got a second to turn his expression to khushi, his eyes reassuring her before they were interrupted.

It was Aakaash holding some file or the other.. his words very much directed at his brother.

Bhai.. woh project..(bhai that project I spoke to you about..) Arnav had promised to help Aakash with his project and totally forgotten. Just as Arnav is about to reply Khushi steps in. Her words aimed a little more at Arnav asking if he wouldnt mind if she stepped in.

Agar aap chahe toe ham?? (if you want I could? ..) her eyes filled with an anticipation for him to say yesand he couldnt ask for anymore.

Watching Khushi walk away with Aaakaash his efforts hadnt gone to waste, he had his khushi back.. and with that thought an relief and smile to his face that had been missing for some time.

Walking further into the lounge away from arnav, Aaakash expresses his gratitude to khushi..the truth was he had made a bit of a mess and the last thing he wanted was to get an ear full from his brother. Thanks Khushi bhabhi, muje laga aap mana kar dengi is liyey hamne bhai ko pucha varna (I thought you would say no thats why I asked bhai otherwise I would have come to you first) the way in which Aakash valued Khushis help added to her self esteem. something much needed.

As Khushi sat with Aaakash, gave her opinions, likes dislikes..and helped him through his task.. Aaakash couldnt help but notice that the Khushi bhabhi he knew of was back. As Aaakaashs work came to an end after some time, there was he had been meaning to tell Khushi for a long time now but never found the right time.

Bhabhi..hame aapse kuch baat karni thi..

Khushi looked up from the laptop they were both looking at and presumed that it was something to do with work but it wasn't.

Bhai ke baare mein. (About bhai)

As Arnav walks out of the washroom after getting out his stained white shirt and into his casual night wear of a black tracksuit and green knitwear, he feels tired, strained yet content.

Walking past the bed where he had earlier dropped his phone, Arnav catches his phone light up for a moment. He knew what it was going to be, he had been avoiding it all day. 8 miss calls and multiple voice messages..all from the same person. Dr Sharma, about to press the delete all button on the hanset, Arnav listens to knew that even if he wanted to ignore it..he wouldnt be able to.

The tone of very concerned female voice.Mr Raizada its Dr sharama.. you have missed all your appointments this week, your blood sugar is not looking good I hope you are taking your medicines. The beep at the end of the message..and the same voice again..

Mr raizada its Dr sharma here again..your test results have come through I know you are back in dehli so Ive sent your reports off please pay your doctor a visit as soon as possible and try to avoid.. any strains will check back tomorrow morning.

There were multiple messages of the kind dropping the phone back, exhausted the truth was that he had been through a rough time in the past year or so and being away from family and particularly Khushi was the cause.. well that is what the doctor had told him over and over again but he was Arnav Singh Raizada he wasn't going to give up part way through and thats just what he did dispite all the trouble.

Pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, composure and feeling of pain bones was all apart of it. Walking towards his wardrobe Arnav opens a drawer where his extra medications where kept hidden from Khushi as not to worry her. Testing his blood sugar with a small device and a little bloodshed, he reads the meter on the device which tells him his blood sugar levels were imbalanced. With slight difficulty but an task he seemed to have mastered on his own he circles a small plaster around his injected thumb and then picks up a selection of different tablets wrapped in silver sachets. Taking them over to the recliner he pours a glass of water into the cup that already sits beside the water jug on the tea table, takes a seat and begins to open up each sachet and swallow the individual tablets. Fatigue overpowering he feels his posture give away his eye falling to a close.

A little later..as Khushi walks into their room quietly as not to disturb him hearing what Aaakash had to say about Arnavs ill health she feels an overpowering guilt and concern for him . She had been too busy with her own doubts and insecurities and had forgotten that he had too gone through the same duration of isolation as her, he just dealt with it another way, he was stronger but that didnt mean the pain was any less.

Seeing him slouched on the recliner, discomfort still lingering on his expression whilst being asleep Khushi thought back to all he had done for her today, all the love, and attention he gave her without ever talking of his own strain she felt her eyes tear up. Walking towards the recliner silently Khushi reaches a close proximity before lowering her posture so she is kneeled beside his recliner looking up towards his side profile. The loose wrappings of tablets lying on the table, that plaster around his thumb all left Khushi a little motionless. She hated to see him this way, one of her tears making its way down her face land on Arnavs hand rested on the arm of the recliner waking him up to realize khushi was by his side.

The droplet on his hand and then those eyes of hers..that gave the most sincere apology told Arnav that she was aware of his condition.

Hame maaf kardijyey (Im Sorry..).. Ham bhool gayey they ke dooriyan ham dono ki zindagi mein thi.. jitni takleef hame hue utni aapko bhi.. ( I forgot that you too went through the same ordeal..you too endured as much distance and pain as I did.)

Arnav looking down at Khushi whose words were muffled in upset, eyes that scattered under his watch, she didn't have to say anything, he knew. Gently cupping her face Arnav wiped away her tears letting her sink into his chest whilst encircling his hand around her back. Feeling comforted Arnavs silence for Khushi was his love, his understanding, reassurance that this was the end of distances between the two of them.

...
