Part 5
Arnav jogged through the streets, running his hand through his hair agitatedly and wondering for the hundredth time what in the hell was wrong with him.
He should have been back at his home, having his usual late night phone call with his Di to let her know he was fine and answer her hundred and one questions. And then he should have been preparing to sleep with may be one last Royal Lochnagar single malt before bed.
He should not be here, on the streets, checking the ability of his hand made Italian leather shoes against the roads of Mumbai, searching for a girl, whose name he didn't know. Was he being foolish? May be she had already reached safely.
Arnav looked around his surroundings. The street lights barely functioned, casting a dim glow around. And although this city never sleeps, this area was surprisingly abandoned with may be a beggar or two in sight.
And definitely no taxis or buses.
So where was she?
Please be okay.
Damn it.
This was all his fault.
If he had not scared her, she might not have fled. How many times had Akash and Di asked him to keep his cool? Losing his temper always inadvertently landed him into shit. He just hoped that she was okay and had caught a taxi and reached home.
He turned around the corner and saw a silhouette at the end of the road. He saw her waiving her hand to a passing taxi, and when it didn't stop, saw her kick a can on the road and curse loudly.
Yes. It was definitely her.
He strode forward, half of him wanting to strangle her for the worry she had put him through, and half of him wanting to hold her in his arms, until he was sure she was okay.
He walked up up to her, stopping just behind her and coughed loudly.
Khushi startled and turned around to see him again. She stifled a groan and decided that enough was enough. Her Devi Maiyya was not getting any Jalebis tomorrow. This crap shit of a day was just not ending.
Before she could open her mouth to ask him if he was stalking her, she heard a weird noise coming out of his mouth.
She saw his lips opening and closing, but no words came out at all.
She arched up her eyebrow as if to ask what was it that he wanted.
'I wanted to say..that is, what I want to say is, what just happened…what I mean is that I don't---' Arnav mentally called himself all sorts of fool as he stammered and stuttered his way through an apology.
Khushi had a hard time trying to stifle her laugh. She could guess that he was trying to apologize, and one look at him and she knew that he was a man who hardly, if ever, apologized. So she decided to be the bigger person here and wait patiently until he found the three words he had such a hard time uttering.
Arnav took a deep breath and forced himself to try one more time. How hard could it be? They were just three words.
'I am Arnav Singh Raizada.'
Khushi nodded and waited for him to continue. But one look at his face, and it seemed like he was done. He was looking at her speculatively, as if trying to read her reaction to his name. and Khushi honestly had no idea who this man- Arnav Singh Raizada- was supposed to be.
'Is this your way of apologizing? By telling me your name?'
On hearing her caustic tone, every idea of an apology flew out of Arnav's mind. Here he was, going crazy searching for her, and she was being intentionally rude with him.
'I have no intention of apologizing to you.'
'Or to anyone else ever if you keep on stuttering the way you just did.' Khushi muttered under her breathe.
'What did you just say?'
'Are you deaf? I really find no appeal in repeating my words again and again for your benefit.'
Arnav felt his anger on the rise again. No one, but no one spoke to him like that. If she were his employee, she would have been kicked out on her delectable little ass by now. But she wasn't her employee.
Arnav had every intention of seeing to it that she would be soon enough.
Then he would see just how appealing she would find repeating words for him. Or maybe just repeating his name over and over again as he got himself acquainted with her.
In the biblical sense.
Cursing himself yet again, and forcing his body to think with the upper part of his anatomy, he decided to tell her about the reason he had been looking for her in the first place.
'I have a prop—an offer for you. A job offer that is. Purely professional.' Arnav assured her hastily, just in case she decide to go on her morale tirade again and accuse him of being some sleazy perv.
Khushi looked up at him suspiciously. She almost had to crane her neck to look up to his eyes. He was at least six feet tall. And now, that she had changed from the pain inducing heels into her sneakers, the top of her head just reached the middle of his chest. Trying not to dwell too much on his physical perfection, she forced herself to think about his job offer.
'And why would you be offering me a job? You hardly know me, or my qualifications. And based of what you have seen of me today, I do not think that you would be too keen to hire me as your server at any of your parties.'
Trying not to think about just how much of her he would like to see, Arnav nodded his head to her statement and then said, ' You don't really need any qualifications for the job. In fact, your lack of qualifications make you perfect for the position.'
Khushi scrunched her face in confusion as she tried to make sense of what was coming out of Arnav's mouth.
'What would this job entail, exactly?' She asked in a calm voice.
'You will be under my apprenticeship for a period of six months. In those six months, I will teach you how to behave, how to talk and also educate you on the most important matters in the market. In short, after six months, you will be a completely transformed lady and you will have no hardship in taking whatever course it is that you want your life to take.
I own AR designs, and also a grooming agency. My company is one of the best when it comes to the discovery of models, so rest assured, you can be sure that you will be in the best of hands.' Arnav explained and waited for her to shriek in glee, as any one of the women he knew would have done, when presented with such an offer.
So it came as a shock to him when she just looked at him as if he had lost his freaking mind and then threw her head back and laughed.
Laughed, damn it!
'Let me get this straight. You want me to work for you for six months. And my work would entail you grooming me to whatever you deem fit. Asking me what to wear, how to behave and how to talk. And you are going to pay me for that?' Khushi managed to ask between snorts of laughter. She still couldn't believe what had come out of his mouth. This whole thing seemed like an episode of The Twilight Zone.
Arnav nodded, glad that she understood what was expected of her.
'And why would you do such a thing? Waste your time, money and resources on some one you don't even know? On someone you have just met today? Not because of the goodness of your heart, I presume. What is in it for you buster?'
'Did you just call me buster?'
'Yes, I did. And you still did not answer my question.'
'I did not answer it because it is none of your business.'
'Oh, it certainly is. You see, it is me whom you are planning to "groom". So yes, I would say it sure as hell is my business about knowing your intentions. And what the hell makes you think that I would ever agree to such a ludicrous proposal? Be your personal doll?'
'Damn it. You are taking it all in the wrong way. You are not going to be my personal doll. Did you not listen to a word that I have said? It will be a job. You will get paid. We can even sign a contract if you want.' Arnav tried to make her understand.
'And why me? Why is it so important to you that I take this job?' Khushi asked him, trying to make sense of all that had happened to her in the past few hours.
Arnav then realized that there was no way that this chit of a girl would agree to his offer unless he gives his reason. And being the shrewd businessman that he was, he knew when to give in to his opponents demands.
'Okay. You saw the guy I was with at the club? He's my friend. And we kind of had a wager. So if I do groom you and after six months you do succeed, then I will win.'
Khushi was not sure if she heard correctly. He wanted to employ her and waste six months of his life on her for a silly bet? Did the guy have a lot of free time? And he was willing to pay her too.
Either this Arnav Singh Raizada was a certified lunatic or he was a very bored man with lots of money to burn.
Though she was sure it was the former, one look at his expensive shoes and trying-to-look-casual-but-in-no-way-so clothes told her that it was the latter.
'So you are doing all this for a bet? Why?'
Arnav looked at her and then smirked.
'Because Arnav Singh Raizada never loses a challenge.' He whispered, bending his mouth near her ear, so that she could feel his breathe on her skin, and shivering suddenly from the close proximity.
She craned up her neck to look him in the eye and decided what was good for the geese was good for the gander.
So she stretched on her tippy toes, put her hands oh his chest and whispered near his ear, 'Well there is a first time for everything, isn't it?'
And saying so she turned on her heels and left in the cab that had just turned around the corner, leaving an open-mouthed Arnav Singh Raizada behind.
Yes you are being spammed !
In the biblical sense." 🤣
I'm seriously so glad that you're back because I really cannot wait to read about what's to happen next. Miss Gupta is giving him hard time already. Can't wait to read how he'll finally end up pursuing her. And dear god, I can't even begin to imagine what will happen after that 😆
I've said this before, and I'll say it again, I freakin' love your writing, dammit!
Cheers!
