Here is my interpretation to Part 12.
This update shows the ability to recover quickly from the setbacks. So RESILIENCE it is.
Arnav didn't go to his office for one week. He worked from home, keeping tabs on his business through Aman & Akash.
Anjali was much better. She joined the family for meals, smiled slightly at NK's jokes, met the lawyer Arnav had summoned, and set the divorce ball rolling.
"If you stand for a reason, be prepared to stand alone like a tree, and if you fall on the ground, fall like a seed that grows back to fight again"
Seeing his Di look less wan, Arnav heaved a sigh of relief.
Nani & Mami went to Laxmi Nagar to talk to the Guptas about the terrible betrayal both families had suffered, and returned with a dabba of laddoos that Buaji & Amma had made specially for Anjali. They were supposed to build up her health. Anjali smiled when the box was given to her, and took one laddoo daily with her lunch.
"Hope is the thing with feathers,
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune...
Without the words,
And never stops at all"
Arnav called Khushi at night, talking for long. His work lay forgotten as he listened to her talk & tease him. Every night, he went to bed with a smile on his lips.
"If you smile when you are alone, then you really mean it"
~ Andy Rooney
One night, he said, "Khushi, I won't be going to the office for the whole of this week. So we can't meet there. So why don't I take you out for coffee?"
"Arnavji!", Khushi sighed. "This Munni is badnam as it is. Now, if I go out to coffee with you, it will be breaking news that Khushi Kumari Gupta has left the Jija & is chasing the Saala!"
"People say conversation is a lost art; how often I have wished it were"
~ Edward R. Murrow
Arnav smiled. "So you won't come out with me for a date?"
"Date? Oo kaa he, Nandkisore?", she imitated her Buaji.
"When a boy and a girl go out together.", explained Arnav, smiling.
"Go out together? With their family?", asked Khushi.
"No.", Arnav sighed, smiling. "Alone. Just the boy & the girl."
"Just them? How boring! If their family was with them, think how much more fun it would be!", Khushi exclaimed.
Arnav burst out laughing.
"There is something so attractive about a man who is able to laugh shamelessly"
~ Shannon Dittemore, Angel Eyes
"Khushi, don't tell me you will take your family along with you on your honeymoon too!", Arnav laughed at her.
"Sharm kiijiye, Arnav Singh Raizadaji!", she exclaimed.
"For what? What did I do?", asked Arnav perplexed but smiling.
"For talking about..., khair chodiye!", she blushed.
"For talking about...", Arnav persisted, smirking. "Don't tell me Khushi Kumari Gupta is shy!"
"Just because I went quiet,
Does not mean that I have nothing to say.
Just because I'm shy,
Does not mean there can't be a way,
Just because I never let you know how I feel.
Does not mean that 'us' is something unreal"
"Hum phone rakh rahe hein.", Khushi said in a hurry, and cut the call.
Arnav chuckled.
"Who is calling so late at night, Nandkisore?", Buaji asked.
"Arnavji, Buaji."
"Arnav Babua? Why is he calling daily? Have you done something, Sanka Devi?", Buaji rolled her eyes.
"Buaji!", Khushi protested. "Why do you always assume that I am at fault?"
"Maybe because you are? Most of the time...", Payal laughed.
Khushi picked up a cushion and threw it at Payal. Payal retaliated. Laughter filled the house, and Amma, Buaji, & Babuji looked fondly at the two girls.
"Cherish all your happy moments;
They make a fine cushion for old age"
~ Booth Tarkington
Arnav handed over the sleeping pill to Anjali & followed it with a glass of water. Anjali took the pill & let Arnav help her into bed.
As he tucked her in, she asked, "Chotey, can I ask you something?"
Arnav looked at her. "You can ask me anything, Di."
"Do you like Khushiji? Or was it all an act... at the temple... on the phone... to take us to Laxmi Nagar?"
Arnav smiled. "I like her, Di."
"Enough to marry her?", Anjali was persistent.
Arnav smiled. "Do you think we would suit? She is a child in a woman's body and I am an old man in a young body."
"Forget all that. The real question is, can you live without her?", Anjali asked.
"You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams"
~ Dr. Seuss
Mami came in with a glass of milk for Anjali, and Arnav escaped having to answer the direct question.
On Sunday night, when Arnav called Khushi, she seemed slightly subdued.
"Arnavji, can I have your photo?", she asked.
"Photo?", Arnav's eyebrows shot up. "Mine?"
"No, Banke Lalji's. Of course, yours!", Khushi frowned.
"Why?", Arnav asked.
"I am planning to frame it, put it on my wall, and place a garland around it. And if you are particular, I will light a lamp too.", Khushi said impatiently. "Will you give me a photo?"
"You remember only what you want to remember. You know only what your heart allows you to know"
~ Amy Tan, Saving Fish from Drowning
"OK... Sure... But Khushi, why?", Arnav's face was a picture of confusion.
Khushi sighed. "Why do people keep photos? To look at them, right? I need your photo to see you. That's all. I am not going to do any black magic with it."
"Khushi..Khushi... Why do you need my photo? Anytime you want to see me, you can come to my office. Or call me.", Arnav smiled.
"Will you give me your photo or not?", Khushi demanded. He could almost see her standing with her hands on her hips.
"I will. I will. But why can't you come to meet me when you feel like seeing me?", Arnav asked.
"I can't come to Delhi each time I want to see you.", Khushi said. "And getting into your office, He Devi Maiyya! It is easier to enter a fortress!"
"Come to Delhi?", Arnav whispered, having got the inkling that something was wrong. Very wrong.
"Ji. Now that I have roshaned my khandaan's naam in all of Delhi, Buaji was thinking of returning to Lucknow.", Khushi smiled.
"Lucknow?", Arnav murmured, shocked.
Khushi laughed. "You sound like Preetho's parrot, Mittu. When Preeto calls "Khushi...", she too calls "Khushi...". When Preetho says, "Shall we have golgappe?", Mittu too says, "Shall we have golgappe?"
"We ape, we mimic, we mock. We act"
~ Sir Laurence Olivier
Arnav clenched his jaw. "Parrot ko goli maro! Khushi..!"
"Aww!", Khushi's mouth opened in indignation. "How can you be so cruel to Mittu? She is my friend, and is so intelligent! Aap ko pata he, when Preetho says "I am an idiot.", Mittu says, "You are an idiot?" She doesn't say "I am an idiot."
"It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently"
~Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment
"Khushi...!", the lion roared.
Khushi winced, and pulled the phone away from her ear.
"Why are you shouting? I can hear. I am not deaf!", Khushi said, rubbing her ear.
"You can hear? That is good.", Arnav fumed. "Now hear me and give me a straight reply."
"Who does he think he is? Laad Governor?", he could hear Khushi grumbling softly.
"Khushi!"
"Kya?"
"Why are you returning to Lucknow?", Arnav asked. He could hear his heart thudding, feel his blood pumping through his veins faster...
Khushi sat down on her bed, sighing. She crossed her legs.
"Arnavji, whether I am guilty or not, a scandal is a scandal. People walking on the street are looking at our house as though something sensational has happened here, as though if they look carefully enough, they can see the blood flowing through the cracks in the wall!"
"Scandal is gossip made tedious by morality" ~ Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan
Arnav fumed.
"The house owner has already given Buaji notice to vacate the house. She has to move out in a month's time."
"What?", Arnav bit out.
He said that he does not want immoral people living in his house. That it would lower the standards of the neighbourhood.", Khushi smiled.
"The respect that you have for yourself sets a standard for others"
~ Evette Carter
"I will show him his standard!", Arnav Singh Raizada growled.
Khushi laughed. "How many people will you fight? Leave it!"
"No!", said Arnav.
"Leave it, Arnavji!.", said Khushi. "We came to Delhi on a short visit. We always meant to return. So moving back to Lucknow is no great punishment."
"Khushi!"
"Buaji suffers from asthma. And leaving her alone here is too much of a risk. And, Rajesh Chacha... he is our neighbour in Lucknow... called us 2 days back and said that he has taken an appointment next month for Babuji to see Dr. Mishra, an Ayurvedic doctor who specialises in stroke patients. So we have to go to Lucknow anyway."
"No, Khushi...", Arnav said.
"Buaji is going to hand over the pension papers to a lawyer here before we leave. She thinks it is no use waiting for the problem to be solved."
"Khushi...", Arnav whispered.
"Leaving Delhi is OK. I am not worried about that. But...", Khushi paused.
Arnav swallowed.
"But... I will never see you again...", Khushi said, her voice soft & sad.
Arnav shut his eyes.
"It was fun, wasn't it? Fighting together against Shyam? Like a team? Like we were together, and not alone?", Khushi sighed.
Arnav felt a sharp pain in his chest region.
"You can't have real pain without real love. You can't feel grief and loss and hurt without real love. Love is the only way you can ever be really hurt deep down"
~ Katherine Applegate, Beach Blondes: June Dreams, July's Promise, August Magic
"So will you give me your photo?", asked Khushi, winking away her tears.
"Yes. Meet me at the office tomorrow at 8, Khushi.", Arnav said softly.
"But you are supposed to be on leave!", exclaimed Khushi.
"Meet me tomorrow at my office at 8. Sharp!", he instructed.
"Laad Governor kahin ke!", he heard her whisper.
"If you simply ignored the feeling, you would never know what might happen, and in many ways that was worse than finding out in the first place. Because if you were wrong, you could go forward in your life without ever looking back over your shoulder and wondering what might have been"
~ Nicholas Sparks, Message in a Bottle
