Chapter 2| Happy Hues
Without beating around the bush he told her the reason of his growing curiosity, and without any hesitation she opened up to him.
She had told him how her parents had moved to England before she was born, how she was brought up in a disciplined environment and at the tender age of sixteen they had moved back to India to take care of the family business. She was then sent again to England to complete her MBA following the tradition like her forefathers did and was asked, or rather forced to join the family business.
"I always wanted to practice arts" she said taking another sip of her black sugarless coffee.
"why didn't you"
"because it won't make me a millionaire" she replied sadly staring at the black liquid, caressing the rim of the mug, the underlying message clearly heard by him.
"but hey you could always practice at home"
He tried to cheer her up.
"no'no use'"
Surely art was something every child was gifted with at birth, but whether it blooms or dies depends on the environment that child is brought up in.
Being born to rich parents had its perks, but as Khushi grew she realized being rich was more of a curse than a blessing. The fields always appeared green from afar.
Khushi belonged to the later, her parents had forced the business principles on her when all she wanted to do was hold a paintbrush.
Arnav couldn't believe this new side of the riches he was witnessing. He knew they would always have one problem or the other, never satisfied, never happy.
But she wasn't complaining, her tone didn't seem that of the rebel or the ungrateful, she was simply stating facts.
Before he could respond his phone rang, at inappropriate times like always.
"Yah Aman, no Aman, yes Aman, okay Aman"
Hearing his dreadful monotonous so called conversation with his employee Khushi couldn't help but giggle.
He smiled seeing he laugh wholeheartedly.
"These stupid meetings I tell you"
He replied checking the time on his phone.
"You've dug everything about me now tell me about yourself"
She asked as her eyes twinkled with sheer joy.
"I'm the owner of AR corp"
He smiled slyly
"So you are a businessman"
She said biting her lower lip.
Only if she knew he was, before expressing her hatred for the field.
"Yes"
Both burst into laughter and the waiter watched with his jaw dropped low.
These two weirdoes who would come here almost every day and stare at their coffees and out the windows as if they would open their philosophy schools right here, were actually laughing and talking like normal people.
Maybe their upper story wasn't empty after all.
He smiled shaking his head, and carrying the empty wooden tray he left to catch his favorite serial.
*********
That night Arnav slept well, his house of five rooms that he lived in alone didn't seem quiet for once, because every moment spent with her kept flashing in one corner or the other. Her voice kept resonating in his head, which made him doubt his mental condition.
Shrugging all other thoughts away, he cursed Aman under his breath as per the normal routine and switching the bedside lamp off he dozed off.
*********
At the other end of the city Khushi wasn't making faces and sulking in duvet, but there she was standing in her pajamas, enjoying the light summer breeze by the window, holding a palette in one hand and a paintbrush in the other she unleashed the pent up emotions on the big white canvas which sat proudly on the expensive easel, ready to be splashed with the happy hues.
