Chapter 4B: Angels and Demons

Riya: ab chup kyun hogaye aap?? Jawaab nahi hai na??? teek waise hi filhaal aapke sawaalon ka koyi jawaab nahi hai mere paas….[pauses and adds sternly] case ke baare mein kuch sawaal ho toh poochiye….warna….[she stopped midway and continued her work…]

Her incomplete subtle sentence was enough to make him realize that she didn't want his intrusion into her personal matters…he took the clue and continued driving…….and never attempted to break the silence…It hurt every bit of him when she shut him out like that but he knew that may be he deserved this……He had shut her out once and never once turned back to her direction…..It had been the worst mistake of his life…….

Soon they reach Ajith's place where they get to know from the neighbors that he hadn't turned up for a long time….and none knew what his new address was….

Arjun breaks into the house and they start searching for available clues…..They get some old photographs of him which seemed to be taken during his film institute days…..there are group photos of Anamika, Beena, Chaya, and all those 10 girls in his group! There are also few other photos that look a little weird but didn't point to anything in particular…..

Few other clues which establish Ajith's identity and those snaps are also collected from his house…..

They return to ETF office where Rathod, Shree and Chotu are also back with new information…..

Shree is the first to voice out his inferences "sir, uss online magazine kisi Karan ka naam pe registered hai…..Aur maine usske photo, archives se dhoond nikhaali hai…yeh rahi….[pushes the snap to Arjun's side….Arjun grins and passes a "I knew it" look at Rathod and the team….he then places Ajith's photo and Karan's photo side by side and pushes to the center of the table]

Arjun speaks up "Great job Shree!"

Rathod nods in agreement "Brilliant!

Riya: sir, aur Monica?? Ussne kuch bathaaya?

Rathod: haan….Maine aur Chotu ne Monica se pooch taach kiya hai"

Chotu starts off "Woh khud confused hai ke yeh sab kyun ho rahi hai? par haan ussne qubool kiya hai ke course ke time pe usske group bohat zyaadha rebellious tha….ek terror waala group tha…..Shaayad aise hi kisi sharaarat ke wajeh se…."

Rathod: hmmm serial killing ki angle se yeh mumkin lagtha hai….shaayad kisi ke saath koyi gandhe mazaag kiya ho inn ladkiyon ne……zaroor Monica humse kuch chupaa rahi hai!

Arjun: Chotu, Monica ko le aaao…..

Monica is brought in to the interrogation room…Rathod sits sideways in his rotating chair….While Arjun, Riya, Chotu and Shree stand around the table…..

Riya initiates the questioning "dekho Monica, tumhe darrne ki koyi zaroorat nahi…bas humaare sawaalon ka teek teek jawaab dena…"

Arjun: par sirf sacch Monica...koyi jhoot ya sacch ko chupaana bhi nahi…..[as she nods, he continues] aap sab ka Ajith ke saat kaisa rishta tha?? aap mein se kisi ke saath usska affair tha??

Monica looked real tense now….she didn't know what to say and what not to reveal….

Rathod added "aise chup rehne se kuch nahi hoga…..tumhe sach bolna hi padega….

Monica: [gathering up words] hum dhost teh…..

Arjun: "teh" matlab ab nahi hai……[pausing] aur affair???

Monica replied in a word "nahi..aisa kuch nahi tha!"

Arjun sat on the table with his legs folded "nau khubsoorat ladkiyaan aur usse koyi romantic inclination nahi! Interesting….very interesting!"

Rathod: kya tum sach bol rahe ho Monica???

Arjun added "ya kuch bathaana bhool rahi ho??"

The temperature in the room was soaring up by the intense, scrutinizing looks of the team….Eventually, she had to give up and come out with the truth

Monica: [giving up] Ajith gay tha…..isiliye hum sab usske saath bohat masti karthe teh…..khaafi close bhi teh….

Riya: aur usske mazaag bhi udaathe teh, right?

Monica closed her eyes nodding her head "haan…..kuch zyaadha hi mazaag banaathe teh! Aksar hurt hota tha….[wipes her tears which rolled due to her guilt feeling] ek din kuch zyaadha hi ho gaya ke ussne suicide karne ki khoshish ki par usske room mate ne usse bachaa liya…..thode din baadh, course half way chodh kar chalaa gaya….phir usse kabhi nahi miley…..hum sab bhi ek ek disha mein chaley gaye….."

Arjun: college mein mazaag masti toh kar sakthe ho par kisike feelings aur emotions ke saath khelna….[glaring at her] isska haq kisiko nahi Monica….[She just nodded and lowered her head burdened in guilt]

[From the photos, Arjun already had a clue about Ajith's state...and the possible reasons for all the killings]

Shree: phir kya hua??

Monica continued "phir achaanak ek saal pehle ussne hum sab ko call kiya….usske magazine aur uss article ke baare mein bathaaya…hum sab excited teh…….He took our interviews online…..I mean video conference mein…."

Chotu: isska matlab tum log usse miley nahi??

Monica nodded "hmmm….ussne kahaa ke woh abhi kaafi busy hai aur mil nahi saktha…so isiliye"

Arjun: yeh Jhaanvi bhi tumaare group mein thi na??

Monica: haan….ek wahi thi jo Ajith ke saath sympathize karthi thi……humse bhi ladthi rehthi thi...

Arjun spoke up, "that explains it….Ajith ne usske naam isiliye choda…."

Rathod and Arjun nod at each other….Rathod looked up at Chotu "Chotu, humein jald se jald Ajith ko dhoondna hoga…..wahi hai jo yeh sab kar raha hai!"

The website article had interviews or tit bits about all the girls except Jhanvi….the killing sequence was in the same order of the interviews on the article…..

Jhanvi was happily married and well settled in kolkatta and she didn't even have a hint of what was happening to her group until Riya called her up and questioned her…She too had similar answers as Monica...She seemed really close to Ajith and also gave some inputs as to where he could possibly be…..She had been in contact with him for a few more years after he left the institute….

Her information and other details from the website helped tracking down Ajith…ETF spreads a trap to grab him putting forth Monica as his bait…..He is a psycho but isn't an intelligent criminal…So he easily falls prey and gets caught in the trap…..

ETF didn't have to take special efforts to get him to tell the truth….He accepts his sins….His statements clearly show that he is mentally disturbed…….He was avenging for all his insults and had hatched a big plan to do it too! He took more than a year just meticulously planning and working on it…..He had first closely tracked down the entire group's present whereabouts and also about their lives…..Then he contacted them and posed to have become cool about the whole affair….

The girls were also more matured now and understood his position better…So when he posed to be the same old friend, they relented and also gave in to his lure for the whole interview and article drama…

And then began his long awaited revenge in the alphabetical order……Janvi was left out deliberately in the article as he didn't want to kill her…she was his only true buddy in the whole group….a real angel to him in between the other witches….Hurting her was out of question….So he didn't even bother to contact her…He knew she was happy in her life…and he never wanted to be a problem to her…..

He was a good guy at heart but the heart was crumbled by the witches he hated like hell!

Case was solved and Ajith was sent to jail with a special order for medical assistance….he disturbed mind and broken heart needed that treatment!

The team sat around the table, replaying the incidents of the case within their mind…

Shree: koyi nightmare ke jaisa lag raha hai…..sacch hai yeh vishwas karna mushkil ho raha hai!

Chotu: haan….ajeeb sa case tha….

Arjun remarks "truth is stranger than fiction at times Chotu!"

Rathod nodded..Riya looked up at Arjun but when their eyes met, she looked away to Rathod as he prepared himself to say something

Rathod: [clearing his throat and in a trial to lighten the situation] SO team…case toh solve hogaya…ab hum humaare kal ke party ke baare mein discuss karlen…?

Arjun sported a totally disinterested look on his face and turned to Rathod meaning "kya party karna zaroori hai Rathod?"

Rathod was quick to grab his point "aise matth dekho Rawte….party toh hogi zaroor aur tumhe aana bhi hai….kuch bhi bahaana nahi chalega!"

Riya spoke up in a pleading tone "sir, mujhe nahi lagtha…."

Rathod snapped her short "main sabse keh raha hoom…Riya, Shree, Chotu….koyi bahaana nahi chalega….Its an order!"

Shree replied "sir, humein toh party karne ke bahaane chahiye…na aane ka nahi…hai na Chotu??"

Chotu: haan of course! Aur Riya bhi aayegi…..hum teenon bohat masti karne waale hain, hai na Riya?

Chotu looked at Riya who was getting nostalgic about their good old times….

She knew that her friends were getting slight vibes of her present tensions in life…..She didn't wish to hide it from them forever but just wanted to wait till she gets out of her messed up life once and for all….then she would tell them everything….Answer every question that runs across in their minds but never once voiced it out merely because they knew that it would hurt her immensely……

So she nodded in affirmation when Chotu asked her that…."hmmm…bohat masti karenge hum!"

But there was not a tinge of fun quotient in her voice….It was sober and almost lifeless! But the friends ignore that for the moment and felt that it was better to assume fatigue as the reason!

She got up bidding a silent bye to the team and left office before anybody else could ask any other question…..She was exhausted from the day's work and just wanted to crash into her private space where her sobs wouldn't be heard by anybody….and where she wouldn't have to pose normal!

Arjun's eyes trailed behind her as she left…he had a strong urge to grab her and ask her what that attitude of hers meant…why was she a changed person now and what was wrong in her life?

But he sat back there doing nothing of that sort, just struck deep in thoughts….obviously thoughts surrounding Riya!

Next day was mere paper work and all except Riya and Arjun were quite excited for the evening…It had been like ages since they had such a party….It was always cases and running around culprits and picking clues and evidences, interrogation etc…Their life always revolved around the the dark alley of life….the crime world, bloodshed and the dangers of messing up with ruthless criminals!

So now, when they got to enjoy some lighter moments, and be in the brighter side of life, they were ecstatic!

Riya's presence around them only brightened up their spirits…..but they were yet to get the full picture about her dark corner of life which she was trying hard to bury within a fake smile whenever they were near her!

Shree: Ri….tumne shopping kiya?

Riya:[looking up to him quite puzzled] shopping?? Kyun?

Shree: yeh tum pooch rahe ho???? I don't believe this! [when she continued her quizzical look, Chotu helped her]

Chotu: party hai na aaj? Isilye pooch raha hai!

Shree: shopping ke bina tumaare parties shuru hi nahi hote teh…..ab kya hua? [turning to Chotu and remarks] yaah hai Chotu, case keliye party pe jaana hota tha, tab bhi ziddh karke naye party wear kareedhthi thi…..aur ab jab ETF ka hi party hai, tab pooch rahi hai, shopping kyun?

Riya became a little unsettled, as Shree had unknowingly triggered old memories in her and she remembers the galore of shopping they used to do…..She used to be very particular when it came to dressing up for parties or such fun outings….she wondered where in the journey of life, had she left all that behind……

Brushing off the memories, she let out a deep sigh and replied "tab ki baat alag tha Shree…..aur ab kuch"

Shree snapped her short "ab kya alag hai??[as if some realization dawning upon him] wait a minute, ab tum ek prince ki princess ho aur royal family ko belong karthe ho….?"

Shree stopped when he saw Riya's expressions changing and did he see a lone tear appearing at the end of her eyes…….He was a bit taken aback by her reaction and added consolingly "chill Ri….main sirf mazaag kar raha tha..i know tum aise nahi ho…..relax ok?"

Chotu: kya Shree….Ri ko rulaa diya….tum bhi na? Riya tum iss nikambe Shree ko seriously matth lo….woh humesha kuch na kuch bakwaas kartha rehtha hai….

Shree: accha bacchu….abhi dikhaatha hoom…..[both Shree and Chotu start their fun time and bickering and Riya couldn't help smiling at their antics……

In fact, Shree and Chotu were doing all that on purpose for bringing up that genuine smile on their best friend's face….and they were successful too….Riya started smiling and laughing uncontrollably…..]

None of them noticed that a pair of eyes were seeing this and his ears were hearing the conversation too…..he was happy seeing Riya's smiles

Rathod had told Riya that he would pick her up around 6:30….She was hurrying up with her evening chores……

As she finished dressing up in a cream and maroon salwar set…[Salwar suits were her present preferences for an evening party wear], she heard the door bell….."Rathod Sir!" she thought

She carelessly flung the duppatta on her shoulders and sprinted towards the door……As she opened the door, a shock awaited her. She almost shouted "TUM?"

SURAJ, the last person she ever wished to see, stood at her door step, sporting one of his cheeky grin…."kyun tum kisi aur ko expect kar rahi thi?"

Riya: [boldly] haan….anyways, that's not the reply to my question Suraj! Tum yahaan kyun aaye ho?

Suraj: [he moved her aside and entered in] whats the hurry? andhar chalke baat karthe hai?

Riya: [stepping in front of him but he was almost in the center of her living room] usski koyi zaroorat nahi Suraj…humaare baatein kab ke khatam ho chukhe hai……ab mujhe kuch kehna ya sunna nahi hai! Its all over!

Suraj: [flaring up a bit] ok ok….main toh sirf yeh dene aaya hoom…..rakhlo kaam aayega! [holds forward a file to her]

Riya: [looking at the file for a moment] yeh kya hai?

Suraj: [smiles] by now, tumhe pathaa hona chahiye darling! I don't take anything free of cost……yeh tumaare ek saal keliye hai! [smirking at her]

Riya: [turning to face him with total disgust in her eyes for him] tum kitne cheap ho yeh maine bohat pehle hi jaan liya tha….par itna ghirr sakthe ho, yeh mujhe pathaa nahi tha…..but its good in a way! I have had a glimpse of that too now! DISGUSTING! [pauses but when he doesn't stop his evil grin or takes back the file, she adds] shaayad tumhe sab kuch kareedhne ki aadhat hai Mr Suraj! Lekin mujhe bechne ki nahi…….shaadi jaise pavithra bandhan ko aise….chi! shame on you!

Suraj: [not giving up and in a flirting tone] tumaare isi andaaz pe fidha hua teh hum jaan-e-mann…aur isiliye main tumhe ek aur maukha dene ko thayaar bhi hoom…par tum ho ki maanthi hi nahi! Chup chaap aa jaavo na waapas mere paas [trying to hug her….she tries to escape his clutches and glares at him]

Riya: SURAJ…..DONT EVEN TRY THAT! Tumaare ghande haathon se mujhe choohna bhi matth…..just get out from here……

But he smirks again and tries to advance towards her and before he could lay his hands on her, he feels a strong pair of arms on his shoulders "SOCHNA BHI MATTH!"

Came a thundering voice from behind him……..
