You know Devi, up until I saw your comment yesterday, I was completely unaware of some unwell situations, to be honest I try to stay away from all this. We have enough on our plates with our real world, than stress over our virtual worlds. I do agree on what you've said, on the other page and on this post, but I do see where she's coming from. I have tried numerous times to give honest feedbacks as a reader, and as a writer. So far, I haven't had any complaints; the journey's been amazing.

When I chose to read a story, I pick them depending on the plot of the story. I am not reading these stories to improve my grammar, had I been doing that, then I would've picked a book instead (no offense). I love it for all the creativity that the writers put forth. I look for plots, the actual storyline, and I look for the 5 senses that we've all learned: see, hear, smell, touch, taste. The character don't have to match accordingly to the show, it could be anything that a writer racks their brain for, but the story has to be captivating. I am not a mindreader, I can't go inside the head of a writer to understand what they're trying to describe, glance up at, that sizzling cool liquid, those little words will make a huge difference in a story. It helps me create a vivid picture while reading. I can read a scene a thousand times and not get chills over it, yet read someone else's work once, and get goosebumps over it. I look for those chills. It's all about the flow of words, and how easily I can picture it in my head.

A writer can only be satisfied when a reader is able to understand what they're trying to convey. A correct grammar will definitely help me to maneuver around the story better, and I do enjoy reading a piece that is usually grammatically correct, however I wouldn't pin it against a story if they lack in it. A grammatically correct piece is as good as adding spice on your food. I have seen a writer with a poor grammar give more to a reader, than a piece with a perfect grammar. I am not ashamed to say it, but yes I do read stories that are lacking in grammar because their plot lines are more captivating. There are times when a story is constantly updated without editing, and I get annoyed because I have seen the same writer with a much better piece and very less grammatical errors. It is as if to say, 'I just don't care about it anymore'. So there will be times when I comment about their grammar, but I don't hold it against them. I understand that English is a second language to most of us, and I respect that, so I try to put myself in the writer's shoes before speaking about it. I write to improve my grammar, and I expect most of the writers to feel the same, but then we do have some people who are just writing to bring their thoughts out. And so, they're not too serious about grammars. Let's not forget the 'texting language', that is beyond my comprehension. I cannot stand it.

I started reading FFs when I felt let down by the CVs. Nayika and The Rain were 2 authors who wrote stories that took the original IPK in the way I felt it could have gone. They are the 2 writers who got me started on FFs on IF.

For me, I relate to the heroine of any show/book/story. I need for the female lead to be strong and intelligent and fiesty (like Khushi was on the show originally). When that was not happening on the show anymore and we only got ASRs point of view I turned to the stories here for a more balanced view.

I have to say I'm a sucker for love stories with a happy ending. Bits of angst only adds to the appeal of the story. Meera30 is great at that. But again I don't read stories where the leads are busy making out with others or cheating on each other or end up with other people etc. That's not my thing. So sometimes I read only some stories of my favorite writers and not the others.

Spelling and grammar is very important for my enjoyment of a story. I have come across some stories with unique premises but have not been able to stick to them because the spelling, grammar and punctuation is atrocious. Text lingo is a turn off. Plot and characterisations are very important too.

I haven't watchied the show for a while ( since it became All about Di ) but I still come on IF to read my FFs.
I have discovered some fantastic writers on this forum and you are definitely one of them Devi.

Hey, really nice post!

Quite honestly, for me, grammar and spellings are two very important things in FFs.
Besides that, of course the story line matters. But for some reason I cannot get my self to real long chapters where there are a hundred grammatical errors. See, a few mistakes are understandable, but when you're writing an official piece, the least a writer can do is give the reader ease and pleasure.

A lot of readers might be comfortable with reading works with errors, but I am not. But I do not mind reading small posts and stuff which has sms language, but not an OS,FF,SS.

Btw, your writing is very good 👍🏼 I do enjoy KH a lot! In fact, it makes me want to pack my bags and run off to Kerala- seriously the first few chapters gave such a nice picture of the countryside.

Hi Devi,
Thanks for starting this topic...I have been in this forum for only a few weeks, but I must say that I am absolutely impressed with the talent on display. I started watching IPKKND a month back (mostly on youtube) and I became such a big Arshi fan that the ongoing episodes did not seem to be enough to satiate my appetite. Hence I started reading these fan fictions. I have already finished some amazing ones like Mystic skies, The filigreed sun, Genesis and so many more and am avidly reading the ongoing ones. What I love the most about these ffs is that it gives me the opportunity to see Arnav-Khushi in a completely different light (I don't quite like what is being shown these days), be it in the form of an office romance (Lavender, The pursuit of love), college romance (Caged hues) etc. But I am a little picky about what I read...and yes,I do prefer like mature, well-written stories. Incorrect spellings and bad grammar are a turn-off for sure. I do understand typos happening here and there. But I have come across stuff that does NOT qualify (by my standards) as a fiction worth my time. But IF is a free platform for those who wish to write and is no business of mine to go about pointing their fallacies. I simply choose not to waste my time on them. But I am totally addicted to some great stuff being dished out here for example (other than the ones I have already mentioned) Raizada & sons, Cherished Wounds, Careless Whispers, Mirage, Desert rose and the list goes on on. Please continue with the amazing work.

Thanx appy for sending me the link now i come to answer the questions being asked
1-y do i read fan fiction?
because i enjoy reading
2-a good and unique story line and a stable concept and interesting prologue to make me interested in reading more... different twists and turns
3- they dont matter to me at all if the writer is successful in conveying what he or she tries to convey m ok with it

for the spelling and grammar i think if someone is not that much good in English but superb in writing and if someone tries to discourage them i would say them coward as they r doing cyber bulling which is illegal and unethical

While I have always been a romantic story and historical romantic story fan, until IPKKND, I had never read any fan fiction.

Then during a slow day in the forum, I went to fan fiction area and found a great story 'Solid Soul' by Akhilesh and read like 16 chapter in one go and I was so impressed that I have since been reading voraciously ( last 6 months) .

Why do you read our stories? And by us, I mean any writer that you choose to read here and have been reading.

Entertainment, entertainment, entertainment. If the concept, the characters and perspective of the Author interests me, then I read. So a lot depends on the prologue and first chapters.

What are you requirements for choosing and sticking with a story?

I am reading for relaxation, escapism and romance/passion. I try to stay away from angst if possible. dying, doom and misery is okay as a flavoring in any romance but not as a staple.

While l am a big fan of love stories, I am not looking for immature silly description of groping between the lovers. I am looking for stories about people who I can emotionally connect with and relate to. Then if they have passionate encounters I am on board.

I stay away from immature authors who write about emotions and actions that they have no experience of.😉.

How important are things like spelling and grammar?

While good understandable English is a requirement, I am reading a couple of authors for whom English is a second language but their concepts tug at my heart strings, and I read them, trying to overlook the Language issues.

I will absolutely not read text, twitter type shorthand stories. As a English Literature fan, spelling and grammar are fairly important but sometimes the concept catches me and then I make allowances.

Whenever I start reading a new FF the first important factor for me too continue reading is the language...if the language is not good I stop reading after the first para. For me to stick to the story, the story should be engaging and not too elaborate on the details though. I started reading FF's only becoz am a big fan of IPKKND and I only read FF's related to this show...

Hey Devi...

Are u the one who wrote LOVE N DESPAIR?

well i read it recently on the blog...First of all let me say u are a fab writer..

Coming to the Discussion...

i wud want to read a story which first n foremost has a lot of EMOTIONS.

The storyline nad pace also play a huge role...But the emotional commmection has to Gel.

Me being a Maaneet fan have never read any thing else..and i nevr thot i cud. But recently i read an FF on another couple...coz the writer wrote half for maaneet n continued it on another forum but
the story was so gripping that i had to continue...in my mind i visualised MG...

So basically its the writers ability to keep us entranced that makes me want to read i guess.

Also i PREFER reading stories with perfect diction. But sometimes i overlook it IF i really like the story..though not alwaz.

Hello D
Alright so I have had pretty heated discussions about this topic with a certain person. I am going to present my own opinion and the opinion of the majority of the readers as I have come to understand it. Obviously, I don't mean that one of them is superior to the other, just that this is what I have observed.
I personally read on IF because of the author. If I find that I like a particular author, I read everything she posts, irrespective of the show the work is based on. I am not a fan of television anyway, so this works for me as the people are merely names. So my priority is the author. Now on what basis is the author decided? Its mostly the language character sketch and plot. As far as the plot is concerned, I have a limited arena within which I experiment. Language is extremely important to me- I sometimes feel I would read anything if its well written. Since my priorities are clearly marked, I am yet to come across a scenario where I would have to advise an author to change. If I find that a particular FF is not upto the mark, I stop reading it. Simple. Also, this criteria is completely personal, so nobody is bound to follow it. I cannot term it as "basic" only because I think that its easy to follow.
Now lets come to what the majority of the forum moves by. Obviously, its the characters on which the story is based. I have come across people refusing to read brilliant stories because they aren't based on their show. So I have concluded that the forum strives on feeding imagination, an alternate to what is shown on the TV. The popularity of FFs is often derived from its leads. Romance is always preferred ofcourse, but now a days, a welcome change in the experimentation of plots is seen.
A friend once told me "I come to this forum to read about my characters. If I wanted to read well written books, I would go for published novels"
The whole point of a website like India-Forums is to provide a platform to people to express. If they don't have guidelines, its stupid to assume that we can have them. The phrase "minimum standards" and "minimum effort" has often been used in the forum. I would love to remind that its all subjective. I hate making an index in my school. All it involves is copying the name of the chapter and the date on a page. 57 seconds. Minimum effort. Yet I did not make it.
The authors here are not to improve as writers. They are here to vent out whats in their head. So let them do that and be happy.
Thank you
